In this paper, we present a strategy to extend solution capability of an existing low Mach number preconditioned compressible solver to incompressible flows with a little modification. To this end, the energy equation that is of the same form of the total energy equation of compressible flows is used. The energy equation is obtained by a linear combination of the thermal energy equation, the continuity equation and the mechanical energy equation. Subsequently, a modified artificial compressibility method in conjunction with a time marching technique is applied to these incompressible governing equations for steady flow solutions. It is found that the Roe average of the common governing equations is equally valid for both the compressible and incompressible flow conditions. The extension of an existing compressible solver to incompressible flows does not affect the original compressible flow analysis. Validity for incompressible flow analysis of the extended solver is examined for various inviscid, laminar and turbulent flows.
Two-dimensional, unsteady, incompressible and compressible Navier-Stokes codes are developed for the computation of the viscous turbulent flow over high-lift airfoils. The compressible code involves a conventional upwind-differenced scheme for the convective terms and LU-SGS scheme for temporal integration. The incompressible code with pseudo-compressibility method also adopts the same schemes as the compressible code. Three two-equation turbulence models are evaluated by computing the flow over single and multi-element airfoils. The compressible and incompressible codes are validated by predicting the flow around the RAE 2822 transonic airfoil and the NACA 4412 airfoil, respectively. In addition, both the incompressible and compressible code are used to compute the flow over the NLR 7301 airfoil with flap to study the compressible effect near the high-loaded leading edge. The grid systems are efficiently generated using Chimera overlapping grid scheme. Overall, the κ-ω SST model shows closer agreement with experiment results, especially in the prediction of adverse pressure gradient region on the suction surfaces of high-lift airfoils.
A theoretical study is made of the steady flow of a compressible fluid in a rapidly rotating finite cylinder. Flow is generated by imposing mechanical and/or thermal disturbances at the rotating endwall disks. Both the Ekman and Rossby numbers are small. A detailed consideration is given to the energy budget for a control volume in the Ekman boundary layer. A combination of physical variables, which is termed the energy contents, consisting of temperature and modified angular momentum, emerges to be relevant. The distinguishing features of a compressible fluid, in contrast to those of an incompressible fluid, are noted. For the Taylor-Proudman column to be sustained, in the interior, it is shown that the net energy transport between the solid disk wall and the interior fluid should vanish. Physical rationalizations are facilitated by resorting to the concept of the afore-stated energy content.
A combined procedure for two-dimensional Delaunay mesh generation algorithm and an adaptive remeshing technique with higher-order compressible flow solver is presented. A pseudo-code procedure is described for the adaptive remeshing technique. The flux-difference splitting scheme with a modified multidimensional dissipation for high-speed compressible flow analysis on unstructured meshes is proposed. The scheme eliminates nonphysical flow solutions such as the spurious bump of the carbuncle phenomenon observed from the bow shock of the flow over a blunt body and the oscillation in the odd-even grid perturbation in a straight duct for the Quirk's odd-even decoupling test. The proposed scheme is further extended to achieve higher-order spatial and temporal solution accuracy. The performance of the combined procedure is evaluated on unstructured triangular meshes by solving several steady-state and transient high-speed compressible flow problems.

Two-phase compressible flow fields of air-water are investigated numerically in the fixed Eulerian grid framework. The phase interface is captured via volume fractions of each phase. A way to model two phase compressible flows as a single phase one is found based on an equivalent equation of states of Tait's type for a multiphase cell. The equivalent single phase field is discretized using the Roe‘s approximate Riemann solver. Two approaches are tried to suppress the pressure oscillation phenomena at the phase interface, a passive advection of volume fraction and a direct pressure relaxation with the compressible form of volume fraction equation. The direct pressure equalizing method suppresses pressure oscillation successfully and generates sharp discontinuities, transmitting and reflecting acoustic waves naturally at the phase interface. In discretizing the compressible form of volume fraction equation, phase interfaces are geometrically reconstructed to minimize the numerical diffusion of volume fraction and relevant variables. The motion of a projectile in a water-filled tube which is fired by the release of highly pressurized air is simulated presuming the flow field as a two dimensional one, and several design factors affecting the projectile movement are investigated.

Methods for the solution of linear stability for compressible boundary layers are developed. Both the global and local methods for stability analysis are used. Both methods are use in solution of Coutte shear flow and the results are analysis and compare. Some well-known conclusions of Coutte flow are proved by these methods again.
Nonlinear parabolized stability equations for compressible flow in general curvilinear coordinate system are derived to deal with a broad range of transition prediction problems on complex geometry. A highly accurate finite difference PSE code has been developed using an implicit marching procedure. Blasius flow is tested. The results of the present computation show good agreement with DNS data. Nonlinear interaction can make the T-S fundamental wave more unstable and the onset of its amplitude decay is shifted downstream relative to linear case. For nonlinear calculations, rather small difference in initial amplitude can produce large change during nonlinear region. Compressible secondary instability at Mach number 1.6 is also simulated and showed that 1.1% initial amplitude for primary mode is enough to trigger the secondary growth.
The penalty method has been widely applied to analyses of incompressible fluid flow. However, we have not yet found any prior studies that employed penalty method to analyze compressible fluid flow. In this study, with an eye on the apparent similarity between the slight compressible formulation and the penalty formulation, we have proposed a new approximate approach that can analyze compressible packing process using the penalty parameter l. Based on the assumption of the isothermal flow, a set of reference solutions was obtained to verify the validity of the proposed scheme. Furthermore, we have applied the proposed scheme to the analysis of the packing process of different cases.

The penalty method has been widely applied to analyses of incompressible fluid flow. However, we have not yet found any prior studies that employed penalty method to analyze compressible fluid flow. In this study, with an eye on the apparent similarity between the slight compressible formulation and the penalty formulation, we have proposed a modified approximate approach that can analyze compressible packing process using the penalty parameter, which is an improvement on an earlier formulation (KSME, 2004B). Based on the assumption of the isothermal flow, a set of reference solutions was obtained to verify the validity of the proposed scheme. Furthermore, we have applied the proposed scheme to the analysis of the packing process of different cases.
