  • The Information of Edges which takes small area comparing with the total image is very important in DNA images as well as general images. DNA image is the object should be managed by computing and it's demanding information is less than general images, but the accuracy is more important In a huge DNA image processing system such as DNA Information Bank, the performance depends on the size of image. In this paper, we extract the edge information and make it as a binary image. To reduce the size of the original image, it was applied by JPEG image compression method. The compressed image is combined with edge information when they are restored. As a result, Both the image compression ratio and restoration quality are optimized without the loss of critical information.

  • With the advent of cell phone digital cameras, and sophisticated photo editing software, digital images can be easily manipulated and altered. Although good forgeries may leave no visual clues of having been tampered with, they may, nevertheless, alter the underlying statistics of an image. Most digital camera equipped in cell phones employ a single image sensor in conjunction with a color filter array (CFA), and then interpolates the missing color samples to obtain a three channel color image. This interpolation introduces specific correlations which are likely to be destroyed when tampering with an image. We quantify the specific correlations introduced by CFA interpolation, and describe how these correlations, or lack thereof, can be automatically detected in any portion of an image. We show the efficacy of this approach in revealing traces of digital tampering in lossless and lossy compressed color images interpolated with several different CFA algorithms in test cell phones.

  • Photoelastic isochromatic fringes related to the difference of principal stresses have some bandwidth whose light intensities are not constant and asymmetrical in experimental images. Hence, it is difficult to measure fringe order accurately at a data point by visual observation. In this study, a method of fringe sharpening, which can extract shapened lines from both full-and half-order fringes by digital image processing, is developed. To test the method, various simple photelastic fringe patterns are simulated and their images are processed to yield sharpened lines. The method is then applied to general problems such as images of a circular disk compressed by diametrically concentrated loads and a circular cylinder sybject to internal pressure. The procedure is proved to be capable of extracting sharpened lines accurately from photoelastic isochromatic fringes.

  • This paper proposes a composition method of mosaic image from the compressed MPEG-2 video stream, in which the displacement between successive frames according to the camera operation is estimated directly from the information involved in the stream. In the proposed method. the approximated optical flow is constructed from motion vectors of macro blocks, and it is used to determine the parameters of the displacements according to the camera operation associated with pan and tilt. The extracted parameters are used to determine the geometric transform of successive video frames in order to construct a mosaic image. The construction of mosaic uses several blending techniques including the one proposed by Nichols in which an analytic weight is used to determine pixel values. Through the experiment, the blending technique based on analytic weights was superior to the others such as averaging and median-based techniques. It provided more smooth changes in background and made use of instantaneous frame information to construct a mosaic. The mosaic in the paper puts the emphasis on the reduction of computation because it is constructed from the motion vectors included in the compressed video without decoding and recalculating exact optical flows. The constructed mosaic can be used in the retrieval of the compressed video as the representative frame of a shot.

  • We compress medical images in order to solve problems both of request of storage mediums and of a low network speed. In this paper, integration compression environment has been developed for unity of various compression methods. Various compression methods that are implemented by integration compression environment, RLC, Lossless JPEG, and JPEG, comply with the DICOM 3.0. A compression method using DWT is implemented at it. And a unit method of Lossless compression method and lossy compression method is designed to improve images quality and to progress compression ratio. Diverse medical images can be compressed by each compression method. And integration compression environment is operated together database so that information of medical images is administered.

  • For efficient transmission and storage of digital images, the requirements of image compression is incresing. Because the medical images contain diagnostic information small distortion has been more important factor than the low rate in such images. Generally the distortion in image is the difference of pixel values. However the image is percieved by human visual systems. So it is reasonable that human visual system characteristics be used as criteria of the image compression. In this paper, the Just Noticeable Difference curve is used as criteria of determining the homogeniety of a block and acceptibility of distortions. And Block Truncation Coding using spatial masking effect of eyes is adopted to code the blocks which contain line components. And small blocks which varies slowly can be approximated to polynomial functions successfully. We proposed the hybrid block coding scheme based on the block characteristics and human visual system characteristics. Simulation to several kinds of the medical images using this method showed that medical images can be compressed 5:1 - 10:1 without noticeable distortion.

  • In some image processing system or the users who want to see a specific region of image simply, if a part of the image has higher quality than other regions, it would be a nice service. Specifically in mobile environments, preferential service was needed, as the screen size is small. So, JPEG2000 supplies this function. But this doesn't support the process to extract specific regions or service and does the functions to add some techniques. It is called by ROI(Region-of-Interest). In this paper, we use images including human faces, which are processed most preferentially and compressed with high quality. Before an image is served to the users, it is compressed and saved. Here, the face parts are compressed with higher quality than the background which are relatively with lower quality. This technique can offer better service with preferential transferring of the faces, too. Besides, whole regions of the image are compressed with same quality and after searching the faces, they can be preferentially transferred. In this paper, we use a face extraction approach based on neural network and the preferential processing with EBCOT of JPEG2000. For experimentation, we use images having several human faces and evaluate objectively and subjectively, and proved that this approach is a nice one.

  • In this work, we considered a compressed-sensing (CS)-based image deblurring scheme with a total-variation (TV) regularization penalty for improving image characteristics in digital tomosynthesis (DTS). We implemented the proposed image deblurring algorithm and performed a systematic simulation to demonstrate its viability. We also performed an experiment by using a table-top setup which consists of an x-ray tube operated at $90kV_p$, 6 mAs and a CMOS-type flat-panel detector having a $198-{\mu}m$ pixel resolution. In the both simulation and experiment, 51 projection images were taken with a tomographic angle range of ${\theta}=60^{\circ}$ and an angle step of ${\Delta}{\theta}=1.2^{\circ}$ and then deblurred by using the proposed deblurring algorithm before performing the common filtered-backprojection (FBP)-based DTS reconstruction. According to our results, the image sharpness of the recovered x-ray images and the reconstructed DTS images were significantly improved and the cross-plane spatial resolution in DTS was also improved by a factor of about 1.4. Thus the proposed deblurring scheme appears to be effective for the blurring problems in both conventional radiography and DTS and is applicable to improve the present image characteristics.
