  • Polyvinylidene fluoride/fullerene nanoparticle (PVDF/$C_{60}$) composite microfiltration (MF) membranes were fabricated by a non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) using N, N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc) as solvent and deionized water (DI) as coagulation solution. Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) was added to the casting solution to form membrane pores. $C_{60}$ was added in increments of 0.2% from 0.0% to 1.0% to produce six different membrane types: one pristine PVDF membrane type with no $C_{60}$ added as control, and five composite membrane types with varying $C_{60}$ concentrations of 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8 and 1.0%, respectively. The mechanical strength, morphology, pore size and distribution, hydrophilicity, surface property, permeation performance, and fouling resistance of the six membranes types were characterized using respective analytical methods. The results indicate that membranes containing $C_{60}$ have higher surface porosity and pore density than the pristine membrane. The presence of numerous pores on the membrane caused weaker mechanical strength, but the water flux of the composite membranes increased in spite of their smaller size. Initial flux and surface roughness reached the maximum point among the composite membranes when the $C_{60}$ concentration was 0.6 wt.%.

  • In this study, we synthesized poly(itaconic acid-co-acrylamide) (IAcAAM) used as a novel polymer adhesion promoter to improve the adhesion strength of surface-treated Cu lead frames and epoxy composites. IAcAAM comprising itaconic acid, acrylamide was prepared through radical aqueous polymerization. The chemical structure and properties of IAcAAM was analyzed by FT-IR, 1H-NMR, GPC, and DSC. The surface of the copper lead frame was treated with high temperature, alkali, and UV ozone to reduce the water contact angle and increase the surface energy. The adhesive strength of Cu lead frame and epoxy composite increased with the decrease of contact angle. The adhesive strength of Cu lead frame/epoxy composite increased with the addition of IAcAAM in epoxy composite. As silica content increased, the adhesive strength of Cu lead frame and epoxy composite tended to slightly decrease.

  • A decoupled thermo-~lezoelectric-mechanical model of composite laminates with surface bonded piezoelectric actuators, subjected to externally applied load, temperature change load, electric field load is developed. The governing differential equations are obtained by applying the principle of free energy and variational techniques. A higher order zigzag theory displacement field is employed to accurately capture the transverse shear and normal effects in laminated composite plates of arbitrary thickness.

  • Composite plating is a method of co-deposition of plating layer with metallic and/or non-metallic particles to improve the plating layer properties such as high corrosion resistance and photolysis of organic compounds. The properties of nickel-ceramic composite plating are significantly depend on the surface characteristics of co-deposited particles as well as the quantity in electrolyte. In this study, Ni-$TiO_2$ composite coating layer was produced by electrodeposition technique from non-aqueous eletrolyte and its surface characteristics as well as photolytic properties were investigated. The amounts of immobilized $TiO_2$ particles increased with increasing the initial $TiO_2$ particles contents in the bath. Samples electroplated with the current density of $0.5\;A/dm^2$ showed the significantly improved homogeneous $TiO_2$ particles distribution. The corrosion resistance of Ni-$TiO_2$ composite coating layer also improved with increaing the amounts of $TiO_2$ particles. Etched sample showed about 10% increased photolytic rate of organic matter compare to that of the non-etched.

  • PURPOSE. This study compared the effect of three intraoral repair systems on the bond strength between composite resin and zirconia core. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Thirty zirconia specimens were divided into three groups according to the repair method: Group I-CoJet$^{TM}$ Repair System (3M ESPE) [chairside silica coating with $30{\mu}m$ $SiO_2$ + silanization + adhesive]; Group II-Ceramic Repair System (Ivoclar Vivadent) [etching with 37% phosphoric acid + Zirconia primer + adhesive]; Group III-Signum Zirconia Bond (Heraus) [Signum Zirconia Bond I + Signum Zirconia Bond II]. Composite resin was polymerized on each conditioned specimen. The shear bond strength was tested using a universal testing machine, and fracture sites were examined with FE-SEM. Surface morphology and wettability after surface treatments were examined additionally. The data of bond strengths were statistically analyzed with one-way ANOVA and Tamhane post hoc test (${\alpha}$=.05). RESULTS. Increased surface roughness and the highest wettability value were observed in the CoJet sand treated specimens. The specimens treated with 37% phosphoric acid and Signum Zirconia Bond I did not show any improvement of surface irregularity, and the lowest wettability value were found in 37% phosphoric acid treated specimens. There was no significant difference in the bond strengths between Group I ($7.80{\pm}0.76$ MPa) and III ($8.98{\pm}1.39$ MPa). Group II ($3.21{\pm}0.78$ MPa) showed a significant difference from other groups (P<.05). CONCLUSION. The use of Intraoral silica coating system and the application of Signum Zirconia Bond are effective for increasing the bond strength of composite resin to zirconia.

  • Mechanochemical effects that occurred in the fine grinding process of quartz particles using planetary ball mill was investigated. Quartz particles have been frequently utilized for optical materials, semiconductor molding materials. We determined that grinding for a long time can be create amorphous structures from the crystalline quartz by Mechanochemical effects. But, to be produced nano-composite particles that the critical grinding time reached for composite materials in a short time. Henceforth, a qualitative estimation must be conducted on the filler for EMC(Epoxy molding compound) materials. It can be produced mechanochemically treated composite materials and also an integrated grinding efficiency considering of the nano-composite amorphous structured particles. The mechanochemical characteristics were evaluated based on particle morphology, size distribution, specific surface area, density and the amount of amorphous phase materials into the particle surface. The grinding operation in the planetary ball mill can be classified into three stages. During the first stage, initial particle size was reduced for the increase of specific surface area. In the second stage, the specific surface areas increased in spite of the increase in particle size. The final stage as a critical grinding stage, the ground quartz was considered mechanochemically treated particles as a nano- composite amorphous structured particles. The development of amorphous phase on the particle surface was evaluated by X-ray diffractometry, thermal gravity analysis and IR spectrometer. The amount of amorphous phase of particles ground for 2048 minutes was 85.3% and 88.2% by X-ray analysis and thermal gravity analysis, respectively.

  • The residual stresses occur in the Frequency Selective Surface(FSS) embedded hybrid composite structures after co-curing due to mismatch among the coefficient of thermal expansions and stiffness values between the FSS and composite materials. The spring backs occur due to these residual stresses. Therefore, in this paper, the spring-backs caused by residual stresses in FSS embedded composite structures were studied with considering effect of symmetric and unsymmetric stacking sequence of composite laminates.

  • Surface modification by low-pressure ammonia ($NH_3$) plasma on commercial thin-film composite (TFC) membranes was investigated in this study. Surface hydrophilicity, total surface free energy, ion exchange capacity (IEC) and zeta (${\zeta}$)-potentials were determined for the TFC membranes. Qualitative and quantitative analyses of the membrane surface chemistry were conducted by attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR FT-IR) spectroscopy. Results showed that the $NH_3$ plasma treatment increased the surface hydrophilicity, in particular at a plasma treatment time longer than 5 min at 50 W of plasma power. Total surface free energy was influenced by the basic polar components introduced by the $NH_3$ plasma, and isoelectric point (IEP) was shifted to higher pH region after the modification. A ten (10) min $NH_3$ plasma treatment at 90 W was found to be adequate for the TFC membrane modification, resulting in a membrane with better characteristics than the TFC membranes without the modification for water treatment. The thin-film chemistry (i.e., fully-aromatic and semi-aromatic nature in the interfacial polymerization) influenced the initial stage of plasma modification.

  • In this study, a new technique is presented, by which one can define ship hull form with full fairness from the input data of lines. For curve modeling, the de Casteljau Algorithm and Bezier control points are used to express free curves and to establish the unified curve modeling technique which enables one to convert non-uniform B-spline (NUB) curve or cubic spline curve into composite Bezier curves. For surface modeling, the mesh curve net which is required to define surface of ship hull form is interpolated by the method of the unified curve modeling, and the boundary curve segments of Gregory surface patches are generated by remeshing(rearranging) the given mesh curve net. From these boundary information, composite Gregory surfaces of good quality in fairness can be formulated.
