  • We synthesized a new composite of poly sodium 4-styrenesulfonate intercalated graphene oxide for energy storage devices by controlling oxidation time in the synthesis of graphite oxide. Specific capacitance was improved from 20 F/g of the previous composites to 88 F/g of the new composite at the current density of 0.3 A/g. The capacitance retention was 94% after 3000 cycles, indicating that the new composites of high cyclic stability, prominent performance as electric double layer capacitor, and even low resistance could be an excellent carbon based electrode for further energy storage devices.

  • In this study, a MWCNT(multi-wall carbon nanotube) was added to polysulfone(PSf) support layer to improve flux of TFC(thin film composite) RO(reverse osmosis) membrane. Two different kinds of MWCNT were used. Surfaces of some MWCNTs were modified hydrophilically through acid treatment, while those of other MWCNTs were modified through heat treatment to maintain their hydrophobicity. MWCNT/PSf support layer was prepared by adding PSf to the NMP mixed solvent containing 0.1 wt% MWCNTs using a phase inversion method. The surface porosity of the MWCNT/PSf support increased by 42~46% while its surface pore size being maintained. The TFC RO membrane made of MWCNT/PSf support layer showed a 20% flux increase while its salt rejection characteristics is sustained. In addition, the MWCNT/PSf support layer has better mechanical stability than the PSf support layer, there resulting in an increased resistance of flux reduction due to physical pressure.

  • The success of controllability of smart structures depends on the quality of the bonding along the interface between the main structure and the attached sensing and acuating elements. Generally, the analysis procedures neglect the effect of the interfacial bond layer or assume that this bond layer behaves like viscoelastic material. Three different bond layers. two modified epoxy adhesives, and one isocyanate adhesive were prepared for their toughness and moduli. Bond layer of the chosen adhesive provides an almost perfect bonding condition between the composite structure and the PZT while bended significantly like arrow-shape. The perfect bonding condition is tested by considering various material properties of the bond layers. and based on this perfect bonding condition, the effects of the interfacial bond layer on the dynamic behavior and controllability of the test structure is experimentally studied. Once the perfect bonding condition is achieved. dynamic effects of the bond layer itself on the dynamic characteristics of the main structure is negligible. but the contribution of the attached PZT elements on the stiffness of the multi-layered structure becomes significant when the thickness of the bond layer increased.

  • The ratio of optimized concentration on optical characteristics for phase-separated composite organic films (PSCOF) liquid crystal display is 30% of pre-polymer (NOA65) and 70% of ferroelectric liquid crystal (Felix). The layer structure in ferroelectric liquid crystal cell made by 30% NOA65 and 70% Felix materials is tilt-bookshelf layer structure. The angle of tilt-bookshelf structure are 17$^{\circ}$, 12$^{\circ}$ which are almost same of tilt angle of ferroelectric liquid crystal in Sm $C^{\ast}$ phase. We know that this result is from compensating the layer buckling. In this paper, we will discuss the effect of layer structure in PSCOF cell on ratio of concentration between pre-polymer and liquid crystal by x-ray measurements. We believe that technology of PSCOF is a good solution to solve the problems of align-defect and mechanical shock for future TV application and plastic LCD.

  • The flexural vibration of a sandwich beam with partially inserted viscoelastic layer has been studied using the finite element analysis in combination with an experiment. Effects of length and thickness of partial viscoelastic layers on system loss factor(${\eta}_s$) and resonant frequency(${\omega}_r$) were considerably large. The thicker the viscoelastic layer in a sandwich beam, the larger the system loss factor in Mode 1 as compared with that in Mode 2. The loss factor increased almost linearly with increasing the length of partial viscoelastic layer. Effects of thickness of beams were also considered.

  • Layer manufacturing technology has been recently spotlighted as a promising candidate to fabricate porous scaffolds for tissue engineering, because it can provide three dimensional interconnectivity and different pore structures and on-demand scaffold design. This study aims to fabricate HA/PCL composite scaffolds for bone tissue engineering by a layer manufacturing technology, paste extruding deposition, and to characterize in vitro and in vivo biocompatibilities of the scaffolds. This study discusses the mechnical properties, proliferation and differentiation of osteogenic cells, and tissue in-growth and bone regeneration behavior using animal models.

  • In this paper, we have considered the method for clustering land cover types over the East Asia from AVHRR data. The feature vectors such that maximum NDVI, amplitude of NDVI, mean NDVI, and NDVI threshold are extracted from the 10-day composite by maximum value composite(MVC) for reducing the effect of cloud contaninations. To find the land cover clusters given by the feature vectors, we are adapted the self-organizing feature map(SOFM) clustering which is the mapping of an input vector space of n-dimensions into a one - or two-dimensional grid of output layer. The approach is to find first the clusters by the first layer SOFM and then merge several clusters of the first layer to a large cluster by the second layer SOFM. In experiments, we were used the 8-km AVHRR data for two years(1992-1993) over the East Asia.

  • Resently, the use of smart structures has been heightened up rapidly. For this issue, vibration analysis related to a graphene nanoplatelet composite (GPLRC) nanodisk which is attached to a piezoelectric layer and is subjected to thermal loads is explored in the current paper. The formulation of this study is obtained through the energy method and nonlocal strain gradient theory, and then it is solved employing generalized differential quadrature method (GDQM). Halpin-Tsai model in addition to the mixture's rule are utilized to capture the material properties related to the reinforced composite layer. The compatibility conditions are presented for exhibiting the perfect bounding between two layers. The results of this study are validated by employing the other published articles. The impact of such parameters as external voltage, the radius ratio, temperature difference, and nonlocality on the vibrational frequency of the system is investigated in detail.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the distribution of von Mises stress, peeling stress, and shear stress in the adhesive layer used to bond two composite panels, considering various parameters using a three-dimensional finite element method. The stiffness of the materials and the effect of the stacking order on the amount of load transferred to the adhesive layer were examined to determine which type of laminate generates less stress at the bond line. The study analyzed six different stacking sequences, all with a common first layer in contact with the adhesive and a 0° orientation. Additionally, the impact of using hybrid composites on reducing bond line stress was investigated.
