Understanding and application of the social system based on the system thinking : Focus on the cooperation model using Cellular Automata (시스템적 사고에 기반한 사회 시스템의 이해와 응용 : Cellular Automata를 이용한 협력모형을 중심으로)

  • This paper deals with the social system from the point of system thinking consisting the fundamental construct of system dynamics. The Bertalanffy's general system theory, having been criticized because of its ambiguity, and the complex science theory, emerging system theory, are integrated by using the system thinking which is characterized with three concepts, 'feedback thinking', 'dynamic thinking', 'operational thinking'. In the integration, system thinking suggests the dynamic pattern of the social system have not only an equilibrium status but also complex status. The science of complexity gives an implication to system dynamics the important of the uncertainty and complexity if we interpret the social system as an open system. To show more concrete description, I simulate the cooperation model based on the iterated prisoner dilemma. The simulation results show the diverse patterns of cooperation and betrayal. Especially the sensitivity of initial payoff will cause the chaotic strategic landscapes as the game gose on. These results mean that we should not give the hasty prescription to control social system artificially. Because social system retains the self-organizing force in itself.

  • Color harmony of Moon and Spencer is based on the Munsell color harmony theory. This harmony theory is established in the three of harmony and disharmony, the harmony of the area of effect, and Aesthetic Measure of harmony and disharmony. Aesthetic Measure here is how to obtain the quantitative expression of the degree of harmony. American scholar Burkhoff were analyzed with the proposition that beauty of Moon-Spencer is with the order in complexity. In this paper, the good and bad of coloration was divide elements of the order and the complexity. Aesthetic Measure is divided into elements of the complexity from elements of the order. This is utilized in the calculation shown in the various image, problem of color harmony and disharmony, which is treated as a sensibility was calculated by numerically. Thus Aesthetic Measure show was good or bad coloration by determining the color in the various image.

  • It become increasingly important to design user interface to carry low complexity. The cognitive limitations of users severely restrict utility of highly intelligent but complex modern systems. Since humans are known to use schemas to reduce cognitive complexity, imposing good consistency to an interface design that may help that user form useful schemas will provide powerful control over the complexity. This present a research effort to develop a quantitative method for evaluating interface complexity that the user would experience planning his or her course of action. Taking into account the user's potential schemas, a quantitative measure based on information theory was develped to assess the navigational complexity. This approach does not rely on the subjective judgment of the researcher as most schemes dealing with user schemas do. The proposed method may benefit the rapid prototyping approach to design a better user interface by allowing handy assessment of the design.

Managing Mega-Project Complexity in Five Dimensions

  • Traditional project management theory is based on a three-dimensional life cycle approach where the project managerseeks to optimize the dimensions of cost-schedule-technical (quality or design). This paper reports the findings of a case study analysis of two complex mega-projects in Michigan which confirm the findings of previous research and illustrates the use of a framework for five-dimensional project management (5DPM) that is for conceptualizing a complex project's scope of work. The framework elevates the recognition that the project's social/political context and the financial arrangements create complexity adding two new dimensions. This paper also demonstrates a methodology to graphically display a project's complexity to better understand and prioritize the available resources. The result is a "complexity footprint" that may help a complex project manager identify the boundary between controllable and uncontrollable projects impacts. The paper finds that applying 5DPM to the two case study projects has given the project delivery team a tool which is actually adding value to the complex project management process.

  • The purpose of this study is to understand a information technology acceptance model and to test empirically using field survey. In order to achieve this purpose, first of all, I examined literature reviews about the theory of reasoned action(TRA), the theory of planned behavior(TPB), and the theories of technology acceptance model(TAM). Based on literature reviews, I proposed a technology acceptance model and empirically verified it through using field survey. As a result of, this study was designed to predict and to explain the factors of affecting reuses of a website. The data that were surveyed 193 users of internet were analyzed with SPSS 12.0 and AMOS 4.0. The major results of this study as follows : First, the perceived complexity is influenced by the skill & experience and the quality of system. Second, the quality of system affects the perceived usefulness. Third, the perceived complexity affects the perceived usefulness and the perceived playfulness. Fourth, reuses of a web site are influenced by the perceived usefulness and the perceived playfulness. Finally, the quality of system affects the perceived usefulness and the skill & experience affect the perceived playfulness.

  • This research focuses on the relationship between mathematics and visual art from a perspective of chaos theory which emerged under the influence of post-modernism. Culture and history, which transform dynamically with the passing of time, are models of complexity. Especially, when the three periods of Medieval, Renaissance, and 17-18 Centuries are observed, the Renaissance period is phase transition phenomenon era between Medieval and 17-18 Centuries. The transition stage between the late Medieval times and the Renaissance; and the stage between the Renaissance and the Modern times are also phase transitions. These phenomena closely resemble similarity in Fractal theory, which includes the whole in a partial structure. Phase transition must be preceded by fluctuation. In addition to the pioneers' prominent act of creation in the fields of mathematics and visual an serving as drive behind change, other socio-cultural factors also served as motivations, influencing the transformation of the society through interdependency. In particular, this research focuses on the fact that scientific minds of artists in the Renaissance stimulated the birth of Perspective Geometry.

  • This paper describes a complexity measure algorithm based on nonlinear dynamics(chaos theory). In order to quantify complexity or regularity of biomedical signal, this paper proposed fractal dimension-1 and fractal dimension-2 algorithm with digital filter. Approximate entropy algorithm which measure a system regularity are also compared. In this paper investigate what we quantify of biomedical signal. These quantified complexity measure may be a useful information about human physiology.

  • This paper investigates a robust low-complexity design problem for tracking control of uncertain switched pure-feedback systems in the presence of unknown control direction. The completely unknown non-affine nonlinearities are assumed to be arbitrarily switched. By combining the nonlinear error transformation technique and Nussbaum-type functions, a robust tracking controller is designed without using any adaptive function approximators. Thus, compared with existing results, the proposed control scheme has the low-complexity property. From Lyapunov stability theory, it is shown that the tracking error remains within the preassigned transient and steady-state error bounds.

  • In estimating designed architectural buildings, many factors in various design domains such as function, structure, form, environment may be considered and then a building design might be selected or modified as final design. This paper proposed a method to obtain complexity values from two dimensional drawings which are floor plans or elevations. The method has been developed based on information theory, shape pattern representation and cognitive theory. Results of measuring complexity value can make the computer evaluate and select final results produced from automatic design processes by the computer That is to say, aesthetic values based on order and chaos can be measured using complexity values and then some results having superior values can be selected as final result.
