  • The Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) models provide information for weather forecasts. The highly nonlinear and complex interactions in the atmosphere are simplified in meteorological models through approximations and parameterization. Therefore, the simplifications may lead to biases and errors in model results. Although the models have improved over time, the biased outputs of these models are still a matter of concern in meteorological and hydrological studies. Thus, bias removal is an essential step prior to using outputs of atmospheric models. The main idea of statistical bias correction methods is to develop a statistical relationship between modeled and observed variables over the same historical period. The Model Output Statistics (MOS) would be desirable to better match the real time forecast data with observation records. Statistical post-processing methods relate model outputs to the observed values at the sites of interest. In this study three methods are used to remove the possible biases of the real-time outputs of the Weather Research and Forecast (WRF) model in Imjin basin (North and South Korea). The post-processing techniques include the Linear Regression (LR), Linear Scaling (LS) and Power Scaling (PS) methods. The MOS techniques used in this study include three main steps: preprocessing of the historical data in training set, development of the equations, and application of the equations for the validation set. The expected results show the accuracy improvement of the real-time forecast data before and after bias correction. The comparison of the different methods will clarify the best method for the purpose of the forecast skill enhancement in a real-time case study.

  • The seismic capacity of electric cabinets in Nuclear Power Plants (NPPs) should be qualified before installation and be maintained during operation. However it can happen that identical devices cannnot be produced for replacement of devices mounted in electric cabinets. In case of when no In-Cabinet Response Spectrum (ICRS) is available for new devices, ICRS can be generated by using Finite Element Analysis (FEA). In this study we investigate structural response and ICRSs of battery charger which is supplied to NPPs. Test results on the battery charger are utilized in this study. The response is measured by accelerometers installed on the housing of the battery charger and local panels in the battery charger. Numerical analysis model is established based on resonant frequency search test results and validated by comparison with 2 types of earthquake testing results. ICRSs produced from the numerical model are compared with measured ICRSs in the seismic tests. Developed analysis model is a simple reduced model and anticipates ICRSs quite well as measured response in the tests overall despite of its structural limitation.

  • One of the most important factors in tall buildings design in urban spaces is wind. The present study aims to investigate the aerodynamic behavior in the square and triangular footprint forms through aerodynamic modifications including rounded corners, chamfered corners and recessed corners in order to reduce the length of tall buildings wake region. The method used was similar to wind tunnel numerical simulation conducted on 16 building models through Autodesk Flow Design 2014 software. The findings revealed that in order to design tall 50 story buildings with a height of about 150 meters, the model in triangular footprint with aerodynamic modification of chamfered corner facing wind direction came out to have the best aerodynamic behavior comparing the other models. In comparison to the related reference model (i.e., the triangular footprint with sharp corners and no aerodynamic modification), it could reduce the length of the wake region about 50% in general. Also, the model with square footprint and aerodynamic modification of chamfered corner with the corner facing the wind could present favorable aerodynamic behavior comparing the other models of the same cluster. In comparison to the related reference model (i.e., the square footprint with sharp corners and no aerodynamic modification), it could decrease the wake region up to 30% lengthwise.

  • In this paper, a study of Urea-SCR System for Dosing Injector for responding to enhanced environmental regulations has been conducted. There is a limit to the experimental approach due to the structural characteristics of the injector. In order to overcome this problem, The analysis was performed assuming unsteady turbulent flow through computational fluid analysis and the internal flow characteristics of the injector were analyzed. By changing the nozzle shape of the injector, the performance factors of the swirl injector by shape were selected and compared. The design parameters were modified by changing the diameter of the nozzle at a constant ratio compared to the base model. Swirl coefficient, outlet mass flow, and sac volume were selected as performance parameters of the injector. The Conv. model to which the taper was applied showed the dominance in mass flow rate, discharge coefficient and swirl because of the smooth fluid flow by shape. Swirl coefficient, outlet mass flow, and sac volume were selected as performance parameters of the injector. As a result of the comparison coefficient derivation with those performance parameters for comparing the performance of the model-specific injector, the Conv-140 model with the nozzle diameter expanded by 140% showed the best value of the comparison coefficient.

  • This paper presents the comparison of the goodness-of-fit test of analytical bond models between concrete and steel or GFRP reinforcements. Bond test specimens were prepared in accordance with the CSA codes and the rebars used in the test were steel and two types of commercial GFRP rebar products. Using the test data, a bond model was proposed, and comparison of goodness-of-fit test for existing bond models and proposed bond model was carried out by the least squares method. The result indicates that the proposed bond model has better goodness-of-fit test than the existing ones.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine preservice secondary science teachers' understanding of the nature of science, by using nature of science (NOS) questionnaire on the basis of atomic model, and compare this to pre-studies. 'Understanding of nature of scientific model,' 'Tentativeness of scientific knowledge,' 'Subjectivity in science,' 'Use of inference and imagination,' 'Myths of the scientific method,' and 'Comparison between science and art.' were examined. Preservice teachers showed great comprehension of the tentativeness of scientific knowledge (the orbital model) and the subjectivity in science (the different interpretation about the experiment of particle scattering), but displayed the lowest comprehension of the scientific method. For understanding of nature of scientific model (the atomic model) and the comparison between science (Bohr's atomic model) and art (Picasso's work), preservice teachers brought out a combination of ontological and constructivist perspective and showed the contradictory thought about imagination in science research. In the result of comparison to pre-studies using the NOS instruments contains general terms, represented high levels of agreement about the tentativeness of scientific knowledge by using concrete examples of 'atomic model'. When concrete scientists such as Thomson, Rutherford, Bohr were presented, respondents revealed more informed views about the scientists' research method.

  • In order to accurately analyze the detailed hydraulic characteristics of the curved channel in the downstream of dam with the hydraulic structures such as bridge piers, RMA2 model which is one of two-dimensional models is applied to ChunCheon dam downstream curved channel. A series of hydraulic model tests are carried out for comparison studies. HEC-RAS model is also applied to the same site. There are no errors when velocities and water levels resulted from HEC-RAS model RMA2 model are compared with those of hydraulic model test on the straight channel. But, it is found that results of RMA2 model have a better agreement with those of hydraulic model test than those of HEC-RAS model on the curved channel with bridge piers. Additionally, RMA2 model can be predicted the eddy phenomena around bridge piers of the curved channel.

  • In this study, a real-time simulation model was developed for tracked vehicles with in-arm type semi-active hydro-pneumatic suspension unit using MATLAB S-functions. Since the vehicle model uses relative coordinates and massless link elements, the developed model has an enhanced analytic time performance. Through the comparison of simulation results with multi-body software(DADS), the vehicle model is verified. A controller using on-off skyhook control algorithm is designed with the pilot-centre]led proportional valve based on conventional damper characteristics. Exploiting the developed tracked vehicle model with other subsystem model such as a controller model, a suspension unit model, and a test road model, computer simulations are carried out. Control simulation results with the developed tracked vehicle model show that the semi-active suspension control system has a better performance than the conventional suspension system.
