  • In this paper, a novel defected ground structure (DGS) pattern with enhanced effective capacitance (varactor diode) and a hole in PCB center is presented. The increase in effective capacitance enables the new DGS pattern to achieve a lower resonance than the DGS pattern for the same etched square dimension. The hole in the center also can make resonator frequency lower with better characteristic. According to the tunable characteristic of varactor diode, the resonant frequencies can be tunable. Simulation results show that a lower resonance is achieved with active device, compared to a common DGS pattern.

  • 4 32-bit RISC core is designed for embedded application and DSP. This processor offers low power consumption by fully static operation and compact code size by efficient instruction set. Processor performance is improved by wing conditional instruction execution, block data transfer instruction, multiplication instruction, bunked register file structure. To support compact code size of embedded application, It is capable cf executing both 16-bit instructions and 32-bit instruction through mixed mode instruction conversion Furthermore, for fast MAC operation for DSP applications, the processor has a dedicated hardware multiplier, which can complete a 32-bit by 32-bit integer multiplication within seven clock cycles. These result in high instruction throughput and real-time interrupt response. This chip is implemented with 0.35${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, 4- metal CMOS technology and consists of about 50K gate equivalents.

  • A compact size high voltage pulse generator with nanosecond rise time has been fabricated and investigated experimentally. It can be reduced the inductance of the generator by fixing the Marx generator components and pulse forming network components into a single cylindrical unit. As a result, it can be obtained nanosecond rise time about $8{\sim}10[ns]$ and pulse width of several hundred nanoseconds from the modified Marx pulse generator. And parametric studies showed that the rise time of the output pulse was depended little on the change of the load resister and the charging capacitor while the pulse width of the output pulse was depended greatly upon the change of the load resistor and the charging capacitor.

  • This paper describes a compact design and control method of PWM inverter-mounted induction motor especially designed for reducing the size and weight considerably, which may be applied to the speed control system such as air conditionr, conveyor and textile mill, etc. To obtain higher power density without derating performance, a new mechanical configuration unifying the inverter circuit and motor is proposed. Also, through the use of current minimization control method during V/f operation it is possible to reduce the size of heat-sink related to the losses of power circuit. By the proposed design method, a compact inverter-mounted induction motor system of 1Hp is built and its validity can be verified through the experimental results.

  • A novel compact and low-loss VHF bandpass filter is presented with enhanced stopband performance using metamaterial zeroth order resonator (ZOR) characteristics. An in-line ZOR filter is initially suggested and changed to have transmission zeros (TZs) due to source-load coupling for effective improvement of the isolation from UHF wireless channels. The proposed filter is smaller than 1/10 of the conventional filters in terms of size and has relatively very low insertion loss (< 1 dB for the electromagnetic (EM) simulation and < 3 dB for the measurement) and return loss (<-20 dB) in the passband due to the approximately 80% size reduction and the higher isolation in the stopband due to the TZs. The circuit and EM simulation are in good agreement with the measurements.

  • The aluminum nitride was synthesized by the self-propagating high-temperature synthesis(SHS). The synthe-sis was used aluminum powder mixed with AlN powder as reactant and the control factors affected to synthesis were considered compact density pressure of reaction gas AlN diluent content and aluminum powder size. The SHS reaction conducted with a reactant containing 50% AlN diluent under 0.8MPa nitrogen gas pressure yielded a complete conversion of aluminum powder to AlN powders. The size and purity of AlN produced were found to be comparable with that of AlN produced by the carbothermal nitrogen method.

  • The design of a new compact UWB bandpass filter is proposed, which has cascaded center-tapped microstrip composite right/left-handed transmission-line zeroth-order resonators (CRLH-TL ZORs). In an attempt to reduce the size, instead of the conventional half-wavelength resonators or periodic and multiple CRLH-TL cells, only one cell ZOR geometry is adopted as each resonator in the filter. Additionally, two center-tapped ZORs are coupled to increase the slope of the skirt. Besides, stepped impedance matching parts are placed in the paths to the input and output ports to enhance passband and stopband performances. The proposed filter is shown to have the overall size of $0.69{\lambda}_g{\times}0.70{\lambda}_g$, the insertion loss much less than 1 dB, and an acceptable return loss performance in the predicted and measured results.

  • We suggest a new approach to lower the operating voltage of plasma display devices using a piezoelectric transformer (PT). $Pb(Mg_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})O_3-PbTiO_3$ (PMNT) was used as a piezoelectric material. The Rosen-type PT, with a compact size of 10 mm ${\times}$ 20 mm ${\times}$ 0.3 mm, was fabricated on a glass substrate. The fabricated PT was operated as a half-wave vibration mode at around 80~90 kHz. The maximum voltage step-up ratio was 3 at 87.8 kHz when the input voltage was 10.32 V (peak-to-peak).

  • Mechanically-alloyed NiAl powder and ball-milled (Ni+Al) powder mixture were sintered by spark-plasma sintering(SPS) process. Mechanical alloying was performed in a horizontal attritor for 20 h with rotation speed of 600 rpm. (Ni+Al) powder mixtures were prepared by ball milling for 1 and 10 h with 120 rpm. Both powders were sintered at $1150^{\circ}C$ for 5 min under $10^{-3}$ torr vacuum with 50 MPa die pressure in a SPS facility. Sintered densities of 97% and 99% were obtained from mechanically-alloyed NiAl powder and (Ni+Al) powder mixture, respectively. The sintered compact of (Ni+Al) powder mixture showed large grain size by a very rapid grain growth, while the grain size of mechanically-alloyed NiAl powder compact after sintering was extremely fine(80 nm). The difference in densification behavior of both powders were discussed.

  • Imaging and scattering techniques using thermal neutrons allow to analyze complex specimens in scientific and industrial researches. Owing to this advantage, there have been a considerable demand for neutron facilities in the industrial sector. Among neutron sources, an accelerator driven compact neutron source is the only one that can satisfy the various requirements-construction budget, facility size, and required neutron flux-of industrial applications. In this paper, a target, moderator, and reflector (TMR) system for low-energy proton-accelerator driven compact thermal neutron source was designed via Monte Carlo simulations. For 10-30 MeV proton beams, the optimal conditions of the beryllium target were determined by considering the neutron yield and the blistering of the target. For a non-borated polyethylene moderator, the neutronic properties were verified based on its thickness. For a reflector, three candidates-light water, beryllium, and graphite-were considered as reflector materials, and the optimal conditions were identified. The results verified that the neutronic intensity varied in the order beryllium > light water > graphite, the compacter size in the order light water < beryllium < graphite and the shorter emission time in the order graphite < light water < beryllium. The performance of the designed TMR system was compared with that of existing facilities and were laid between performance of existing facilities.
