  • Because of the rapid development of computer technology in recent years, wave models can utilize parallel calculations for the high-resolution prediction of open sea and coastal areas with high accuracy. Parallel calculations also allow national agencies in the relevant sectors to produce marine forecasting data through massive parallel calculations. Meanwhile, the eastern coast of the Korean Peninsula has been increasingly damaged by swell-like high waves, and many researchers and scientists are continuing their efforts to anticipate and reduce the damage. In general, the short-term transformation of swell-like high waves can be reproduced relatively well in the third generation wave models, but the transformation of relatively long period waves needs to be simulated with higher accuracy in terms of the nonlinear wave interactions to gain a better understanding of the low-frequency wave generation and development mechanisms. In this study, we developed a calculation module to improve the calculation of the nonlinear energy transfer in the 3rd generation wave model and integrated it into the wave model to effectively consider the nonlinear wave interaction. First, the nonlinear energy transfer calculation module and third generation model were combined. Then, the combined model was used to reproduce the wave transformation due to the nonlinear interaction, and the performance of the developed operation module was verified.

  • The purpose of this study is to show the geographical distribution and the temporal variation of the emission amount of biogenic volatile organic compounds(BVOCs) emanated from forests at Jeju Island. The total emission amount of BVOCs calculated by using the CORINAIR Methodology is $3612ton\;yr^{-1}$ at Jeju Island. More than half of BVOCs emissions is come from coniferous forest, and 45 per cent from broad leaved forest. The others is attributed to grassland. Of total emission of BVOCs, isoprene accounts for 28 per cent, monoterpene for 32 per cent, and other VOCs for about 40 percent, respectively. It can be shown that $3000{\sim}10000kg\;yr^{-1}$ of BVOCs is emitted at the zone with dense forest from an altitude of 500 m to the top of Mt. Halla, and less than $1500kg\;yr^{-1}$ at the zone an altitude of below 500 meters. The monoterpene emission is more than $1500kg\;yr^{-1}$ due to the existence of a colony of Abies koreana at the place with more than 1500 meters and a community of Pinus thunbergii and Cryptomeria japonica at the elevation of 500~700 m. In the case of isoprene emission, there is $1500{\sim}3000kg\;yr^{-1}$ at the zone of an elevation from 700 m to 1500 m due to dense broad leaved forest and very little of its emission at an elevation of more than 1500 meters because there is hardly broad leaved trees grown. In this study, emission of BVOCs according to the altitude above sea level is estimated under the situation of lack of the data for broad leaved tree. More detailed data and information for the distribution of broad leaved trees are needed in order to calculate more realistic BVOC emission.

  • Multidirectional random waves that obliquely approach the shore were found to become directionally asymmetric due to refraction. The directional asymmetry was expressed in terms of the asymmetry parameter which is related to the maximum spreading parameter ($s_{max}$). In this study, we calculate variation of both the asymmetry and maximum spreading parameters at different water depths for various cases of incident wave angles and maximum spreading parameters in deep water. These values are different from Goda and Suzuki (1975) who neglected directional asymmetry of waves. In calculating directional asymmetry and maximum spreading parameters, we use the JONSWAP spectrum (Hasselmann et al., 1973) and Lee et al.'s (2010) directional distribution function. The processes and results are nondimensionalized with significant wave height, peak frequency and peak wave length in deep water.

  • This paper develops a finite element model for studying the occupant behavior and injury cofficients of a large-sized cab-over type truck. Since it does not have a room to absorb collision energy and deformation in front of the passenger compartment the deformation is directly transmitted to the passenger compartment. Moreover, since its steering column is attached on the frame, severe deformation of the frame directly affects on the steering wheel's movement. Therefore, if the occupant behavior and injury coefficients analysis is performed using a finite element model developed based on a sled test, it is very difficult to expect acquiring satisfactory results. Thus, the finite element model developing in this paper is based on the frontal crash test in order to overcome the inherent problems of the sled test based model commonly used in the passenger car. The occupant behavior and injury coefficients analysis is performed using PAM-CRASH installed in super-computer SP2. In order to validate the reliability of the developed finite element model, a frontal crash test is carried out according to a test method used fur developing truck occupant's secondary safety system in european community and japan. That is, test vehicle's collision direction is vertical to the rigid barrier and collision velocity is 45kph. Thus, measured vehicle pulses at the lower parts of the left and right B-pilla., dummy chest and head deceleration profiles, HIC(head injury criterial) and CA(chest acceleration) values, and dummy behavior from the frontal crash test are compared to the analysis results to validate reliability of the developed model.

  • In recognition of the transportation problems of the present and to prepare for the ever increasing demands of the future, government decided to develop the magnetically levitated train domestically and started R&D program office in Korea Institute of Machinery and Metals(KIMM). This office since has established three step by step goals : first to develop a 40 passenger exhibition vehicle for Daejon EXPO'93, second to develop the low to mid-speed maglev system for urban public transportation by 1997 and finally the high speed inter-city maglev train by year 2001. The first two maglev systems will use attractive levitation-LIM driven technologies and these technologies are the ones currently being developed by this office and others. The maglev train system is a product of wide range of technologies from electro-technologies to civil engineering technologies. Some of the technologies are currently available but more have to be developed in the near future and these technologies are owned by or to be developed by various institutions within the science & technology community. The level of the technologies available at the present time are still very rudimentary and their basis are very narrow. Recently we have made a few successes in terms of levitation and propulsion but they are only with small scale modules and results are very qualitative at best. A great deal of development work has yet to be done to refine the technologies and to gain confidence. Full scale levitation/propulsion modules will be tested on the curved guideway within 6 months by this office and another institution. This paper reviews the current status of the maglev technologies in Korea and discuss the development strategies. The Korean maglev program is very ambitious and the schedule is even more so. A steady financial support and strong system engineering and integration are essential to the success of this program.

  • Nowadays, the arson is not common interest happening. the arson has been handled with a crime of violence along with murder, robbery and rape. because of being detrimental to the public clam. but the arson a has not been made award of a serious social problem. There is a rise in the control possibility according to a level of national concern. we have known that the last fire accident of the Deagu underground It took a heavy toll of lives and the property due to our no interest in arson. The government and regional self governing community have fully aware of the serious of the arson so that we can make arrangement for overall measures. The government should not only make up for legislation and systematize to correct a defect but also there is uniting the countermeasure system of the organs. The government establish particular research institution of the arson to consider a useful countermeasure. The investigation authorities should develop the investigation technique to arrest an arsonist. The relevant post strengthen the public relation to bring up a private organization of fire prevention in order to prevent the arson to try the government best.

  • Trickling filter has been extensively studied for the domestic wastewater treatment especially for the small scale plants in rural area. The performance of the trickling filter depends on the microbial community and their activity in the biofilms on the media. Nitrification. denitrification, and phosphorus removal of the trickling filter from the wastewater depend on the activity and the amount of the specific microorganisms responsible for the metabolism. For the estimation of the performance of a trickling filter, batch nitrification experiment and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) were carried out to measure the microbial activity and its distribution on the media of the trickling filter. Batch nitrification activity measurement showed that the top part of the 1st stage trickling filter had the highest nitrification activity and the maximum activity was 0.002 g $NH_4$-N/g MLVSS${\cdot}$h. It is thought that higher substrate (ammonia) concentration yields more nitrifying bacteria in the biofilms. The dominant ammonia oxidizer and nitrite oxidizer in the biofilm were Nitrosomonas species and genus Nitrospira, respectively, by FISH analysis. Less denitrifiers were found than nitrifiers in the biofilm by the probe Rrp1088 which specifically binds to Rhodobacter, Rhodovulum, Roseobacter, and Paracoccus. Phosphorus accumulating bacteria were mostly found at the surface of the biofilm by probe Rc988 and PAO651 which specifically binds to Rhodocyclus group and their biomass was less than that of nitrifiers.

  • Mobile Ad-hoc networks have recently attracted a lot of attention in the research community as well as in industry. Although the previous research mainly focused on various of Ad-hoc in routing, we consider, in this paper, how to efficiently support applications such as variable Goocasting basd on Ad-hoc networks. The goal of a geocasting uotocol is deliver data packets to a group of nodes that are located within a specified geocasting region. Previous research that support geocast nice in mobilie computing based on Ad-hoc have the non-optimization problem of data delivery path, overhead by frequent reconstruction of the geocast tree, and service disruption problem. In this paper, we propose the mobility pattern based geocast technique using variable service range according to the nobility of destination node and resource reservation to solve this problem. The experimental results show that our proposed mechanism has improved performance of Connection & Network Overhead than previous research.
