In this research, combustion and spray characteristics were investigated experimentally in a constant volume chamber by applying different composition rates of octane number in diesel fuel to a common-rail system. For the visualization, the experiment was carried out under different injection pressures and different cetane number. The test was done by three different types of diesel fuels, the different composition rates of cetane number in diesel fuel and HBD. In summary, this research aims to investigate the combustion characteristics in the application of fuels and compare the results with performance of conventional diesel fuel. This experimental data may provide with fundamentals of the development of diesel engines in future.
The effects of change in injection pressure on spray structure in high temperature and pressure field have been investigated. The analysis of liquid and vapor phases of injected fuel is important for emissions control of diesel engines. Therefore, this work examines the evaporating spray structure using a constant volume vessel. The injection pressure is selected as the experimental parameter, is changed from 72MPa to 112MPa by using a common rail injection system(ECD-U2). The images of liquid and vapor phase in the evaporating free diesel spray are simultaneously taken by exciplex fluorescence method. As a result, it can be confirmed that the distribution of vapor concentration is more uniform in the case of the high injection than in that of the low injection pressure.

A Common-Rail Direct Injection(CRDI) system for high speed diesel engines was developed to meet reductions of noise and vibration, and emission regulations. In this study, CRDI system analysis model which includes fuel and mechanical sub-systems was developed using commercial software, AMESim in order to predict characteristics for various fuel injection components. Each component which constructs system was modeled and verified by sub-model of AMESim obtained characteristics curves of each components. The parameter sensitivity analysis such as throttle size, injection rate, plunger displacement, supply pressure of fuel injection for system design were carried out by the analysis.

An injection control valve(ICV) was designed to control the fuel flow between a common rail and an injector with two commercial solenoids. To improve the performance of ICV, the characteristic method was applied. With this method, the flow characteristics in the ICV and the injector were studied and the parameters which affect the injection characteristics were also studied. From this study, following results were obtained. The injection duration can be controlled and with modifications of the effective valve stroke of ICV, the injection quantity and duration can be reduced to desired amount. Also the injection quantity and pressure can be controlled by reducing the hole size of the injector without the variation of the injection duration. For some conditions, the desired injection characteristics can be obtained by the changes of the valve timing, the effective valve stroke, the open pressure of the injector and the hole size of the injector.
The aim of this work is to investigate the combustion and exhaust emission characteristics of low-temperature combustion (LTC) at various EGR test conditions using a single cylinder common-rail diesel engine. In high EGR rate combustion mode with DME fuel, 30% (${\Phi}=0.61$) and 50% (${\Phi}=0.86$) of EGR were respectively examined, and then the combustion, exhaust emissions, nano-particle characteristics of each cases were measured. From these results, it revealed that The ignition delay and combustion duration are prolonged as the increase of EGR rate. In addition, at an advanced injection timing (BTDC $30^{\circ}$), ignition delays were fairly increased because the dilution effect of EGR and also low charge in-cylinder temperature created a lean mixture, thus decreased the peak release rate.

In order to confront the increasing air pollution and the tightening emission restrictions, this research developed a diesel engine using DME, the advanced smoke-free alternative fuel. By numerical analysis, flow field, spray, and combustion phenomenon of the DME engine was presented. Using an experimental method, the configuration of the fuel supply system and operation/power performance was tested with the current plunger pump. Most emission performance, especially smoke performance was significantly improved. The possibility of conversion from the current diesel engine into the DME engine was affirmed in this research. However, it was found that the increase of engine RPM and fuel amount need to be properly adjusted through matching the characteristics of fuel and injector for further improvement.
This paper presents spray characteristics of piezo-driven type common-rail injector and comparisons to those of solenoid-driven type. Experiments were conducted to measure spray penetraion and SMD distributions using a spray visualization system and PDPA (phase Doppler particle analyzer) system. Injection conditions including injection pressure and energizing durations were varied in order to analyzing effects of injection conditions on spray characteristics. Furthermore, ambient pressures were increased for keeping ambient gas density close to in-cylinder pressure of diesel engine. Results showed that injection delay of piezo-driven type injector was much shorter than those of solenoid driven type and exhibited enhanced atomization performances.

The creation of a single European rail transport market it is important to increase confidence between the actors on the market and between member states who shall ensure that railway safety is generally maintained and, where reasonably practicable, continuously improved. For this purpose the European railway safety directive introduces a mechanism to adopt a Common Safety Targets (CST) expressed in risk acceptance criteria for individuals and for society. This paper focuses on the apportionment of safety targets for European railway system. We develop a generic approach based on the Functional Hazard Analysis (FHA), to analyse the safety of railway systems for a unified European network and to comply with the CSTs required by the European railway Safety Directive. We suggest to combine the FHA technique with the functional railway architecture to allocate the safety targets to the railway functions.
In this study, the characteristics of particulate matters (PM) from diesel and biodiesel fuel combustion was experimentally investigated. The experiment was performed in a single cylinder common-rail compression ignition engine. The fuels were injected at -5 CAD (Crank angle degree) ATDC (After top dead center) with 80 MPa injection pressure. Size distribution of PM was measured by scanning mobility particle sizer (SMPS) and morphology of PM was studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). PM from biodiesel shows lower emission level and smaller primary particles.
