Examination on Combustion Quality Analysis of Residue Heavy Fuel Oil and Improvement of Combustion Quality Using Pre-injection (중질 잔사유의 연소성 분석과 보조 분사에 의한 연소성 향상에 관한 검토)

  • Due to the development of the petroleum refining technology and continuously increased demand from markets, a quantity of gasoline and diesel oil produced from a restricted quantity of crude oil has been increasing, and residual fuel to be used at marine diesel engines has been gradually becoming low quality. As a result, it was recently reported that trouble oils which cause abnormal combustion such as knocking with extreme noise and misfire from internal combustion engines were increasing throughout the world. In this study, an author investigated ignitability and combustion quality by using combustion analyzer with constant volume(FCA, Fuel Combustion Analyzer) and middle speed diesel engine about MDO(Marine Diesel Oil), HFO(Heavy Fuel Oil), LCO(Light Cycle Oil) and Blend-HFO which was blended LCO of 1000 liters with HFO of 600 liters. Moreover, for betterment of ignitability and combustion quality of injected fuels, multi-injection experiment was carried out in the diesel engine using Blend-HFO. According to the results of FCA analysis, ignitability and combustion quality was bad in the order of MDO

  • Engine Noise is composed of the mechanical and combustion noise. The contribution of combustion noise is generally bigger than the contribution of the mechanical noise at idle condition in DI diesel engine. That noise usually makes a roughness problem at the fundamental engine order. It is difficult to remove the modulation frequency so we have to directly reduce the combustion noise. The key effect of combustion noise reducing solution is the modification of the combustion pressure profile. It is accomplished by the multiple injection method and we solved the 400Hz combustion noise and improved the sound quality at idle condition in DI diesel engine.

Study on Combustion Characteristics of Diesel Fuel and Low Quality Oil Droplet with Additive Oxygenate and Paraffin (함산소계 및 파라핀계 혼합 경유 및 저질유 액적의 연소특성에 관한 연구)

  • The single droplet combustion characteristics of diesel fuel and low quality oil with additive oxygenate and paraffin under high ambient temperature and atmospheric pressure were investigated in the study. The results of the study may are concluded as follows: In the combustion of diesel fuel and low quality oil droplet with additive of oxygenate and paraffin. the dimensionless droplet size of $(D/Do)^2$ was linearly decreased with time. A fuel droplet with low boiling temperature additives and in high boiling temperature base fuel evaporates and burns faster than usual base fuel. Especially. these trends were remarkably obtained by decreasing boiling point and increasing blending contents of additives in case of oxygenated agents rather than n-paraffin agents. This rapid burning may result from so-called 'micro-explosion' and its burning intensity varies with the types of additives. The results above may suggest that rapid evaporation of oxygenate additive in the middle stage of combustion can contribute much to combustion improvement of blended fuels.

  • This study examined combustion characteristics by selecting the fuel which have a different physical properties compared to gasoline in order to examine the effects of vehicle performance and environment depending on the physical properties. The experiment examined the combustion characteristic in the optimum ignition timing according to the physical properties change and the lean burn by performing control about ignition timing and air-fuel ratio for each fuel, and it was also evaluated the exhaust gas according to the experiment. We used a single-cylinder engine for the experiment, and tested for gasoline properties change by selecting a fake fuel that beyond the fuel quality standards in 석대법. As a result, in the case of the selected fuel showed a difference in Octane and distillation characteristics, vapor pressure and it was also found to unstable combustion, and leads to a large amount of harmful exhaust gas.

  • Lean burn engine, classified into port injection and direct injection, is recognized as a promising way to meet better fuel economy. Especially, LPG direct injection engine is becoming increasingly popular due to their potential for improved fuel economy and emissions. Also, LPDi engine has the advantages of higher power output, higher thermal efficiency, higher EGR tolerance due to the operation characteristics of increased volumetric efficiency, compression ratio and ultra-lean combustion scheme. However, LPDi engine has many difficulties to be solved, such as complexity of injection control mode (fuel injection timing, injection rate), fuel injection pressure, spark timing, unburned hydrocarbon and restricted power. This study is investigated to the influence of spark timing, fuel injection position and fuel injection rate on the combustion stability of LPDi engine. Piston shape is constituted the bowl type piston. The characteristics of combustion is analyzed with the variations of spark timing, fuel injection position and fuel injection rate (early injection, late injection) in a LPDi engine.

  • It is thought that the quantity and quality of the heat stimulation and the mechanism of heating process are important to understand the moxa-combustion. In order to get the basic data on the effective moxa-combustion method, combustion temperature changes (average temperature, peak temperature, average gradient temperature and maximum gradient temperature) of the heating period were measured respectively by the density of moxa material. For the experiment, samples of $300mg/0.26cm^3$ , $400mg/0.26cm^3$ and $500mg/0.26cm^3$ of moxa material were molded in a conical mold with each 10mm in diameter and height. 1. The average temperature and peak temperature of heating period on the moxa-combustion showed higher in the $400mg/0.26cm^3$ and $300mg/0.26cm^3$ than in the $500mg/0.26cm^3$ sample respectively. 2. The average gradient temperature of heating period on the moxa-combustion rose quickly in the $300mg/0.26cm^3$, $400mg/0.26cm^3$ and $500mg/0.26cm^3$ in that order and the maximum gradient temperature rose more quickly in the $300mg/0.26cm^3$ and $400mg/0.26cm^3$ than in the $500mg/0.26cm^3$ sample respectively. According to the above results, it is concluded that the density of moxa material is (the) more important (factor) than the weight or volume of moxa material on the combustion temperature changes of the heating period for the evaluation of the quality and quantity of moxa-combustion.

  • These days, coal is one of the most important energy resources used for transportation, industry, and electricity. There are two types of coal: high-rank and low-rank. Low-rank coal has a low calorific value and contains large amounts of useless moisture. The quality of low-rank coal can be increased by simple drying technology and it needs to be stabilized by hydrocarbons (e.g. palm acid oil, PAO) to prevent spontaneous combustion and moisture re-adsorption. Spontaneous combustion becomes a major problem during coal mining, storage, and transportation. It can involve the loss of life, property, and economic value; reduce the quality of the coal; and increase greenhouse gas emissions. Besides spontaneous combustion, moisture re-adsorption also leads to a decrease in quality of the coal due to its lower heating value. In this work, PAO was used for additive to stabilize the upgraded coal. The objectives of the experiments were to determine the stabilization characteristic of coal by analyzing the behavior of upgraded coal by drying and PAO addition regarding crossing-point temperature of coal, the moisture behavior of briquette coal, and thermal decomposition behavior of coal.

  • Coal combustion in an iron ore sintering bed is a key parameter that determines quality of the sintered ores and productivity of the process. In this study, effects of the different types of coal coke and anthracite - on the combustion in the iron ore sintering bed are investigated by modeling and experiment. Fuel characteristics of coke and anthracite are observed through a few basic analysis and thermo-gravimetric analysis. It was found that coke has a higher reactivity than anthracite due to the difference of surface area and density. Those characteristics are reflected to the 1-D unsteady simulation of the iron ore sintering bed. Calculation results show that different reactivity of the fuel can affect the bed combustion, which implies the further investigation should be performed for obtaining optimal combustion conditions in the sintering bed.
