  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of the Otago exercise combined with action observation training on changes of the brain activity of the elderly. Design: Randomized controlled trial. Methods: Thirty elderly women in the experiment were included. Participants were randomly assigned to the Otago combined with action observation training group, the Otago exercise group, and the control group (10 in each group). The Otago combined with action observation training group and the Otago exercise group performed the strength and balance exercises of the Otago exercise program for 50 minutes three times a week for 12 weeks. The Otago combined with action observation training group underwent additional action observation training for the Otago movement for 20 minutes three times a week. No intervention was performed in the control group. PolyG-1 (LAXTHA Inc., Daejeon, Korea) was used to measure the changes in the brain activity following intervention. One-way analysis of variance was used to compare the effects among the groups and a post-hoc test was performed. Results: The relative mu rhythms in the F3, C3, and C4 regions were significantly increased in the Otago combined with action observation training group. Relative beta wave activity in the Fp1, F3, F3, and C3 regions was significantly increased in the Otago combined with action observation training group (p<0.05). Conclusion: The results indicated that the Otago exercise combined with action observation training was effective for promoting the brain activity of the elderly.

  • We experienced a case of esophageal leiomyoma combined with achalasia that is very rare. Patient had suffered from severe dysphagia and postprandial vomiting and diagnosis was accomplished by esophagography, esophagoscopy, chest CT, and esophageal motility test. The operative treatment was done through left lateral thoracotomy by enucleation of the submucosal tumor and esophagomyotomy. By histopathological findings, the diagnosis of leiomyoma was confirmed and LES biopsy revealed absence of the ganglion cells of myenteric and Auerbach`s plexus. Symptoms of the patient were completely relieved and postoperative course was uneventful.

  • An experimental investigation on the energy absorption of two staged combined structures is presented, which deals with the plastic collapse test as a series of research on soft bow structure involved in a ship collision. The principle of arithmetic superposition of energy absorption is derived upon experimental analysis and based upon the characteristics of the energy absorptions of component structures. This relationship is related to the further approach toward the design of soft bow.

  • Due to environmental regulations (RoHS, WEEE and ELV) of the European Union, electronics and automotive electronics have to eliminate toxic substance from electronic devices and system. Specifically, reliability issue of lead-free solder joint have an increasing demand for the car electronics caused by ELV banning. The authors prepared engine control unit and cabin electronics soldered with Sn-3.0Ag-0.5Cu (SAC305). To compare with the degradation characteristics of solder joint strength, thermal cycling test (TC), power-thermal cycling test (PTC) and series tests were conducted. Series tests were conducted for TC and PTC combined stress test using the same sample in sequence and continuously. TC test was performed at $-40{\sim}125^{\circ}C$ and soak time 10 min for 1000 cycles. PTC test was applied by pulse power and full function conditions during 100 cycles. Combined stress test was tested in accordance with automotive company standard. Solder joint degradation was observed by optical microscopy and environment scanning electron microscopy (ESEM). In addition, to compare with deterioration of bond strength of quad flat package (QFP) and chip components, we have measured lead pull and shear strength. Based on the series test results, consequently, we have validated of series test method for lifetime and reliability of Pb-free solder joint in automotive electronics.

  • In this study, the combined electrokinetic and ultrasonic remediation technique, ultrasonically enhanced electrokinetic technique, was studied for the removal of heavy metal and organic substance in contaminated soils. The electrokinetic technique has been applied to remove mainly the heavy metal and the ultrasonic technique has been to remove mainly organic substance in contaminated soil. The laboratory soil flushing tests combined electrokinetic and ultrasonic technique were conducted using specially designed and fabricated devices to determine the effect of these both techniques. A series of laboratory experiments involving the simple, electrokinetic, ultrasonic, and electrokinetic & ultrasonic flushing test were carried out. A soil admixed with sand and kaolin was used as a test specimen, and Pb and ethylene glycol were used as contaminants of heavy metal and organic substance. An increase in out flow, permeability and contaminant removal rate was observed in electrokinetic and ultrasonic flushing tests. Some practical implications of these results are discussed in terms of technical feasibility of in situ implementation of electrokinetic ultrasonic remediation technique.

  • In this paper, an improved GA-based damage detection algorithm using a set of combined modal features is proposed. Firstly, a new GA-based damage detection algorithm is formulated for beam-type structures. A schematic of the GA-based damage detection algorithm is designed and objective functions using several modal features are selected for the algorithm. Secondly, experimental modal tests are performed on free-free beams. Modal features such as natural frequency, mode shape, and modal strain energy are experimentally measured before and after damage in the test beams. Finally, damage detection exercises are performed on the test beam to evaluate the feasibility of the proposed method. Experimental results show that the damage detection is the most accurate when frequency changes combined with modal strain-energy changes are used as the modal features for the proposed method.

  • The research proposes the three-factor random measurement models for estimating the precision about operator, part, tool, and various measurement environments. The combined model with crossed and nested factors is developed to analyze the approximate F test by degrees of freedom given by Satterthwaite and point estimation of precisions from expected mean square. The model developed in this paper can be extended to the three useful models according to the type of nested designs. The study also provides the three-step procedures to evaluate the measurement precisions using three indexes such as SNR(Signal-To-Noise Ratio), R&R TR(Reproducibility&Repeatability-To-Total Precision Ratio), and PTR(Precision-To-Tolerance Ratio), The procedures include the identification of resolution, the improvement of R&R reduction, and the evaluation of precision effect.

  • Cerebral air embolism combined with cardiomyopathy secondary to pulmonary barotrauma is rare. Here, we report an unusual case of cerebral air embolism combined with transient cardiomyopathy secondary to large bulla rupture during a pulmonary function test after lung cancer surgery. The patient experienced loss of consciousness. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging suggested a cerebral air embolism. Electrocardiography showed ST-segment elevation and abnormally high plasma levels of cardiac enzymes. Echocardiography and coronary angiography suggested cardiomyopathy. The patient was discharged with no sequelae.

  • The main disadvantages of destructive testing methods are the delay in obtaining test results, the relatively high cost of testing, and the lack of reproducibility in the test results. As a result, nondestructive testing methods are generally used. There are three objectives in this paper. The first is to determine the equations of the compressive strength of concrete estimated by Schmidt hammer technique, ultrasonic pulse velocity method and combined method respectively in laboratory. The second is to determine the correction factors according to the concrete age which affects most in evaluating the compressive strength of in-situ concrete. The third is to examine the applicability of the equations to evaluation of the compressive strength of in-situ concrete structures.
