  • A two-dimensional optical code division multiple access (OCDMA) en/decoder composed of four double-ring resonator add/drop filters and three delay waveguides is designed, and a transfer matrix method combined with fast Fourier transform is implemented to provide numerical simulations for the en/decoder. The auto-correlation peak level over the maximum cross-correlation level is larger than 3 at the center of the correctly decoded pulse for most of wavelength hopping and spectral phase code combinations, which assures the BER lower than 10-3 which corresponds to the forward error correction limit.

  • Since the coupling of cavitation modeling with turbulent flow is the difficulty topic, a numerical simulation for two phase flow remains as one of the challenging issues in the society. This research focuses on the development of numerical code to deal with incompressible two phase flow around conical body combined with cavitation model suggested by Kunz et al. with k-e turbulent model. The simulation results are compared to experimental data to verify the validity of the developed code. The calculation results show very good agreement with experimental observations. Also, the calculation of cavitation in cryogenic fluid is being done by implementing the temperature sensitivity in government equations and it is still in the progress. This code have been being further extended to 3D compressible two phase flow for the study on the fluid dynamics around inducers and impellers in turbo pump system.

  • This research was prompted by the paucity of specific code provisions regarding the design of short columns for shear. The purpose of this paper was to investigate whether the use of the normal shear design procedure of various codes may or may not be applied to reliably calculate the shear strength of short columns. Provisions of the codes American ACI 318M-08, Canadian CSA A23.3-04, Japanese AIJ Guidelines, New Zealand NZS 3101, European EN 1998 (EC8) parts 1 and 3, combined with EN 1992-1-1 (EC2), and draft fib Model Code 2010, as well as a strut-and-tie model are applied on short columns tested under cyclic loading that failed in shear. Actual shear resistances are compared to predictions, and the resulting shortcomings of the codes are identified. EN1998-3 appears to be the only code among those considered that may be reliably applied to estimate the shear resistance of short columns. Further, the proposed strut-and tie model can be a useful tool for the detailed design and assessment of short columns.

  • In this paper, we proposed a content-based image retrieval method using color and object's complexity for indexing of image database. Generally, the retrieval methods using color feature can not sufficiently include the spatial information in the image. So they are reduced retrieval efficiency. Then we combined object's complexity which extracted from chain code and the conventional color feature. As a result, experiments shooed that the proposed method which considers the shape feature improved performance in conducting content-based search.

  • OFDM(Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) scheme can compensate for distortions caused by multipath delay spread and reduce the burst errors caused by the Doppler effect since OFDM signals have long symbol durations. However, OFDM is required to be improved for high speed data transmission and large capacity. Therefore, coding schemes should be combined with OFDM. In this paper, it was studied that the performance of OFDM transmission scheme was improved in mobile communication channel by applying TCM, which has advantages of error correction and bandwidth efficiency. Simulation was carried out for two TCM models with different code efficient length. By mapping two models to square 16QAM, the model with the code efficient length of 2 achieved 3dB better than the other for the BER of 10/sub -3/. In conclusion, if we want to achieve a better performance with TCNA in OFDM applications, we should select a TCM with larger code efficient length.

  • The distributed code is a type of linear codes that can be used for coding and federated learning for privacy. In the distributed code, privacy or confidential information is not dependent to each other because the information of each code is not included with other codes. In this paper, we examine the properties of these distributed codes and present techniques for synthesizing new sets of distributed codes from previously known distributed codes. In addition, we propose several scenarios in which combined codes can be used.

  • Interaction of lateral loading, combined with axial force needs to be determined with care in reinforced concrete (RC) one-dimensional structural members (1D SMs) such as beam-columns (BCs) and columns. RC 1D SMs under heavy axial loading are known to fail by brittle mode and small lateral displacements. In this paper, a macro element-based algorithm is proposed to analyze the RC 1D SMs under monotonic or cyclic combined loading. The 1D SMs are discretized into macro-elements (MEs) located between the critical sections and the inflection points. The critical sections are discretized into fixed rectangular finite elements (FRFE). The nonlinear behavior of confined and unconfined concretes and steel elements are considered in the proposed algorithm. The proposed algorithm has been validated by the results of experimental tests carried out on full-scale RC structural members. The evolution of ultimate strain at extreme compression fiber of a rectangular RC section for different orientations of lateral loading shows that the ultimate strain decreases with increasing the axial force. In the examined cases, this ultimate strain ranges from 0.0024 to 0.0038. Therefore, the 0.003 value given by ACI-318 code for ultimate strain, is not conservative and valid for the combined load cases with significant values of axial force (i.e. for the axial forces heavier than 70% of the ultimate axial force).

  • This paper presents experimental and numerical investigations of aluminum tubular members subjected to combined bending and web crippling. A series of tests was performed on square hollow sections (SHS) fabricated by extrusion using 6061-T6 heat-treated aluminum alloy. Different specimen lengths were tested to obtain the interaction relationship between moment and concentrated load. The non-linear finite element models were developed and verified against the experimental results obtained in this study and test data from existing literature for aluminum tubular sections subjected to pure bending, pure web crippling, and combined bending and web crippling. Geometric and material non-linearities were included in the finite element models. The finite element models closely predicted the strengths and failure modes of the tested specimens. Hence, the models were used for an extensive parametric study of cross-section geometries, and the web slenderness values ranged from 6.0 to 86.2. The combined bending and web crippling test results and strengths predicted from the finite element analysis were compared with the design strengths obtained using the current American Specification, Australian/New Zealand Standard and European Code for aluminum structures. The findings suggest that the current specifications are either quite conservative or unconservative for aluminum square hollow sections subjected to combined bending and web crippling. Hence, a bending and web crippling interaction equation for aluminum square hollow section specimens is proposed in this paper.

  • The use of dual-frequency measurements from the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) enables us to observe precise ionospheric total electron content (TEC). Currently, many GNSS reference stations in South Korea provide both GPS and GLONASS data. In the present study, we estimated the grid-based TEC values and relative receiver differential code biases (DCB) from a GNSS network operated by the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute. In addition, we compared the diurnal variations in a TEC time series from solutions of the GPS only, the GLONASS only, and combined GPS/GLONASS processing. A significant difference between the GPS only TEC and combined GPS/GLONASS TEC at a specific grid point over South Korea appeared near the solar terminator. It is noted that GLONASS measurements can contribute to observing a variation in ionospheric TEC over high latitude regions.

  • A theoretical formulation for the analysis of free vibration of a cylindrical shell with a circular plate attached at an arbitrary axial position of the shell under various kinds of boundary conditions was derived and programed to get the numerical results for natural frequencies and mode shapes of the combined system. The boundary conditions of the shell to be considered here are clamped-free, clamped-simply supported, both ends clamped and both ends simply supported. The frequencies and mode shapes from theoretical calculation were compared with those of commercial finite element code, ANSYS. The results showed good agreement with those of ANSYS in frequencies and mode shapes. The program will contribute to the design optimization of a shell/plate combined system through the analysis of natural frequencies and mode shapes for the system.
