  • It is generally known in seismic design that the beam yield type frames have more advantages than column yield type of which damage is likely to concentrate to any story. However we may design a building as a beam yield type, it becomes actually a column yield type collapse mode for slab floor diaphragm effect. Considering these points, the column yield type frames are selected and designed as the specimens. The object of this study is to grasp quantitatively the restoring force characteristic values and to estimate the seismic performances of column yield type steel rahmen.

  • This paper presents a foundation pile to steel column connection that can resist large magnitude of moment and that can be easy installed. The developed joint has spherical shape and it is given the name HAT joint to mean Hallow half-sphere steel joint. Four types of HAT joints are developed. Namely, H-type, T-type, P-type and K-type. In this paper I will talk about the performance assessment of T-type(Tube Column) and P-type(Pile Column) of HAT joints with finite element analysis and experiment on a full scale model is presented.

  • The virbration characteristics of a passenger car steering column are studied by using a modal test and a finite element (FE) analysis. To verify the FE model and the results, an experiment using the impact exciting method is performed. Two types of the steering column in this study are considered as follows; (ⅰ) the non-tilt type steering column and (ⅱ) the upper-tilt type steering column. The experimental results are compared with those o the FE analysis, and it ti shown that the results agree with each other. The effects of various design parameters such as the bracket thickness, the column diameter on the natural frequencies are also investigated by FE analysis.

  • The failure of reinforced concrete structures in recent earthquakes caused concern about the performance of beam column joints. Confinement of joint is one of the ways to improve the performance of beam column joints during earthquakes. This paper describes an experimental study of exterior beam-column joints with two non-conventional reinforcement arrangements. One exterior beam-column joint of a six story building in seismic zone III of India was designed for earthquake loading. The transverse reinforcement of the joint assemblages were detailed as per IS 13920:1993 and IS 456:2000 respectively. The proposed nonconventional reinforcement was provided in the form of diagonal reinforcement on the faces of the joint, as a replacement of stirrups in the joint region for joints detailed as per IS 13920 and as additional reinforcement for joints detailed as per IS 456. These newly proposed detailing have the basic advantage of reducing the reinforcement congestion at the joint region. In order to study and compare the performance of joint with different detailing, four types of one-third scale specimens were cast (two numbers in each type). The main objective of the present study is to investigate the effectiveness of the proposed reinforcement detailing. All the specimens were tested under reverse cyclic loading, with appropriate axial load. From the test results, it was found that the beam-column joint having confining reinforcement as per IS: 456 with nonconventional detailing performed well. Test results indicate that the non-conventionally detailed specimens, Type 2 and Type 4 have an improvement in average ductility of 16% and 119% than their conventionally detailed counter parts (Type1 and Type 3). Further, the joint shear capacity of the Type 2 and Type 4 specimens are improved by 8.4% and 15.6% than the corresponding specimens of Type 1 and Type 3 respectively. The present study proposes a closed form expression to compute the yield and ultimate load of the system. This is accomplished using the theory of statics and the failure pattern observed during testing. Good correlation is found between the theoretical and experimental results.

  • The column-tree type steel beam-column connections are commonly used in East Asian countries, including Korea. The welding detail between the stub beam and column is similar to the WUF-W connection; thus, it can be expected to have sufficient seismic performance. However, previous experimental studies indicate that premature slip occurs at the friction joints between the stub and link beams. In this study, for the accurate seismic performance evaluation of column-tree type moment connections, a moment-slip model was proposed by investigating the previous test results. As a result, it was found that the initial slip occurred at about 25% of the design slip moment strength, and the amount of slip was about 0.15%. Also, by comparing the analysis results from models with and without the slip element, the influence of slip on the performance of overall beam-column connections was examined. As the panel zone became weaker, the contribution of slip on overall deformation became greater, and the shear demand for the panel zone was reduced.

  • It would be much effective that single column type pier is used in concrete slab bridges rather than gravity type pier is used. To determine the longitudinal bonging moment in concrete slab bridges supported by single column type piers, the concept of effective width is applied. By elastic plate theory cooperated with finite element method, the distribution of the longitudinal moment of the slab supported by single column type piers is studied. The main variables are span, width, and thickness of the slab and column section size. Then the analytical results obtained are summarized and analysed to evaluate the maximum longitudinal negative moment by simple beam analysis.

  • This study described the result of laboratory model tests, in order to compare the improvement effect of the DCM column installed on the soft ground according to DCM column type. In the laboratory model test, the non-reinforced type and the 3 types of DCM column were applied, and the behavior (settlement, lateral flow) of soft ground was evaluated under the surcharge load condition for each type. The settlement evaluation result showed that the settlement of soft ground without DCM column occurred rapidly under the low load condition, but the settlement of the soft ground with the DCM column had relatively small settlement. The evaluation result of lateral flow in the soft ground showed that the soft ground with DCM column had lower lateral displacement than the soft ground without DCM column. Especially, the lateral displacement under the same load condition decreased in the order of pile type, wall type, and grid type. Therefore, it confirmed that the improvement effect of soft ground was excellent when the DCM of grid type was applied for settlement and lateral flow.

  • In an attempt to develop a novel process for ethanol production from starch, a simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) process using Zymomonas mobilis and amyloglucosidase (AMG) was studied in continuous modes. Compared with a conventional cylindrical column type of fermentor, the tapered column type of fermentor was found to be superior in terms of reactor performance for ethanol fermentation. The tapered columm fermentor packed with coimmobilized Z. mobilis and AMG alleviated the problems which were associated with CO2 evolution and provided a significantly better flow pattern for both liquid and gas phases in the fermentor without channelling. However, the fluidized bed type of tapered column fermentor using flocculent strain of Z. mobiles and immobilized AMG showed lower productivity (5.2g/1/h) than that of packed bed type of tapered column fermentor(9.2g/l/h).

  • In this paper the influence of rotary inertia, shear and compressibility on the value of the critical force for the Beck's column is analyzed. The constitutive equation is of Engesser's type. As a result, the critical load parameter for which instability of flutter type occurs is calculated for several values of the column's parameters.

  • This paper deals with experimental investigation and modeling of the static behavior of a novel RCS beam-column exterior joint. The studied joint detail is a through-column type in which an H steel profile totally embedded inside RC column is directly welded to the steel beam. The H steel profile was covered by two supplementary plates in the joint area in order to avoid the stirrups resisting shear in the joint area. Two full-scale through-column-type RCS joints were tested under static loading. The objectives of the tests were to examine the connection performance and to highlight the contribution of two supplementary plates on the shear resistance of the joint. A reliable nonlinear 3D finite element model was developed using ABAQUS software to predict the response and behavior of the studied RCS joint. An extensive parametric study was performed to investigate the influences of the stirrups, the encased profile length and supplementary plate length on the behavior of the studied RCS joint.
