In practical designs, most of the multidisciplinary problems have a large-size and complicate design system. Since multidisciplinary problems have hundreds of analyses and thousands of variables, the grouping of analyses and the order of the analyses in the group affect the speed of the total design cycle. Therefore, it is very important to reorder and regroup the original design processes in order to minimize the total computational cost by decomposing large multidisciplinary problems into several multidisciplinary analysis subsystems (MDASS) and by processing them in parallel. In this study, a new decomposition method is proposed for parallel processing of multidisciplinary design optimization, such as collaborative optimization (CO) and individual discipline feasible (IDF) method. Numerical results for two example problems are presented to show the feasibility of the proposed method.

Aircraft design pursues integrated design efforts by considering all design elements together. In the integrated design environment, it is crucial for the design data to be consistent, free of errorm, and most recent. Database design process consists of the analysis of the data which shall be stored and managed, the construction of the E-R Diagram, and the mapping of the database table. As a DBMS (DataBase Management System), Oracle 8i is employed to design and construct the database. The database design methodology is devised to apply for the several MDO(Multidisciplinary Design Optimization) techniques like MDF(MultiDisplinary Feasible), IDF(Individual Discipline Feasible), and CO(Collaborative Optimization). The defined process is demonstrated through a couple of design examples, including a simple numerical example and a UCAV(Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicle) design optimization.

Recently engineering systems problems become quite large and complicated. For those problems, design requirements are fairly complex. It is not easy to design such systems by considering only one discipline. Therefore, we need a design methodology that can consider various disciplines. Multidisciplinary Design Optimization (MDO) is an emerging optimization method to include multiple disciplines. So far, about seven MDO methodologies have been proposed for MDO. They are Multidisciplinary Feasible (MDF), Individual Feasible (IDF), All-at-Once (AAO), Concurrent Subspace Optimization (CSSO), Collaborative Optimization (CO), Bi-Level Integrated System Synthesis (BLISS) and Multidisciplinary Optimization Based on Independent Subspaces (MDOIS). In this research, the performances of the methods are evaluated and compared. Practical engineering problems may not be appropriate for fairness. Therefore, mathematical problems are developed for the comparison. Conditions for fair comparison are defined and the mathematical problems are defined based on the conditions. All the methods are coded and the performances of the methods are compared qualitatively as well as quantitatively.

Hierarchical constraints and constraint satisfaction were analyzed in order to solve the problem of conflict detection in collaborative design. The constraints were divided into two sets: one set consisted of known constraints and the other of unknown constraints. The constraints of the two sets were detected with corresponding methods. The set of the known constraints was detected using an interval propagation algorithm, a back propagation (BP) neural network was proposed to detect the set with the unknown constraints. An immune algorithm (IA) was utilized to optimize the weights and the thresholds of the BP neural network, and the steps were designed for the optimization process. The results of the simulation indicated that the BP neural network that was optimized by IA has a better performance in terms of convergent speed and global searching ability than a genetic algorithm. The constraints were described using the eXtensible Markup Language (XML) for computers to be able to automatically recognize and establish the constraint network. The implementation of the conflict detection system was designed based on constraint satisfaction. A wind planetary gear train is taken as an example of collaborative design with a conflict detection system.

Measuring similarity in collaborative filtering-based recommender systems greatly affects system performance. This is because items are recommended from other similar users. In order to overcome the biggest problem of traditional similarity measures, i.e., data sparsity problem, this study suggests a new similarity measure that is the optimal combination of previous similarity and the value reflecting the number of co-rated items. We conducted experiments with various conditions to evaluate performance of the proposed measure. As a result, the proposed measure yielded much better performance than previous ones in terms of prediction qualities, specifically the maximum of about 7% improvement over the traditional Pearson correlation and about 4% over the cosine similarity.

Aircraft manufacturing companies have to consider multiple derivatives to satisfy various market requirements. They modify or extend an existing aircraft to meet new market demands while keeping the development time and cost to a minimum. Many researchers have studied the derivative design process, but these research efforts consider baseline and derivative designs together, while using the whole set of design variables. Therefore, an efficient process that can reduce cost and time for aircraft derivative design is needed. In this research, a more efficient design process is proposed which obtains global changes from local changes in aircraft design in order to develop aircraft derivatives efficiently. Sensitivity analysis was introduced to remove unnecessary design variables that have a low impact on the objective function. This prevented wasting computational effort and time on low priority variables for design requirements and objectives. Additionally, uncertainty from the fidelity of analysis tools was considered in design optimization to increase the probability of optimization results. The Reliability Based Design Optimization (RBDO) and Possibility Based Design Optimization (PBDO) methods were proposed to handle the uncertainty in aircraft conceptual design optimization. In this paper, Collaborative Optimization (CO) based framework with RBDO and PBDO was implemented to consider uncertainty. The proposed method was applied for civil jet aircraft derivative design that increases cruise range and the number of passengers. The proposed process provided deterministic design optimization, RBDO, and PBDO results for given requirements.
Collaborative filtering systems have problems involving sparsity and the provision of recommendations by making correlations between only two users' preferences. These systems recommend items based only on the preferences without taking in to account the contents of the items. As a result, the accuracy of recommendations depends on the data from user-rated items. When users rate items, it can be expected that not all users ran do so earnestly. This brings down the accuracy of recommendations. This paper proposes a collaborative recommendation method for extracting typical group preferences using user-item matrix optimization and user profiles in collaborative tittering systems. The method excludes unproven users by using entropy based on data from user-rated items and groups users into clusters after generating user profiles, and then extracts typical group preferences. The proposed method generates collaborative user profiles by using association word mining to reflect contents as well as preferences of items and groups users into clusters based on the profiles by using the vector space model and the K-means algorithm. To compensate for the shortcoming of providing recommendations using correlations between only two user preferences, the proposed method extracts typical preferences of groups using the entropy theory The typical preferences are extracted by combining user entropies with item preferences. The recommender system using typical group preferences solves the problem caused by recommendations based on preferences rated incorrectly by users and reduces time for retrieving the most similar users in groups.

Plutonium-238 has always been considered as the one of the promising radioisotopes for space nuclear power supply, which has long half-life, low radiation protection level, high power density, and stable fuel form at high temperatures. The industrial-scale production of 238Pu mainly depends on irradiating solid 237NpO2 target in high flux reactors, however the production process faces problems such as large fission loss and high requirements for product quality control. In this paper, a conceptual design study of producing 238Pu in a multi-purpose high flux reactor was evaluated and analyzed, which includes a sensitivity analysis on 238Pu production and a further study on the irradiation scheme. It demonstrated that the target structure and its location in the reactor, as well as the operation scheme has an impact on 238Pu amount and product quality. Furthermore, the production efficiency could be improved by optimizing target material concentration, target locations in the core and reflector. This work provides technical support for irradiation production of 238Pu in high flux reactors.

Recent advances in deep neural networks (DNNs) have greatly improved the accuracy and universality of various intelligent applications, at the expense of increasing model size and computational demand. Since the resources of end devices are often too limited to deploy a complete DNN model, offloading DNN inference tasks to cloud servers is a common approach to meet this gap. However, due to the limited bandwidth of WAN and the long distance between end devices and cloud servers, this approach may lead to significant data transmission latency. Therefore, device-edge collaborative inference has emerged as a promising paradigm to accelerate the execution of DNN inference tasks where DNN models are partitioned to be sequentially executed in both end devices and edge servers. Nevertheless, collaborative inference in heterogeneous edge environments with multiple edge servers, end devices and DNN tasks has been overlooked in previous research. To fill this gap, we investigate the optimization problem of collaborative inference in a heterogeneous system and propose a scheme CIS, i.e., collaborative inference scheme, which jointly combines DNN partition, task offloading and scheduling to reduce the average weighted inference latency. CIS decomposes the problem into three parts to achieve the optimal average weighted inference latency. In addition, we build a prototype that implements CIS and conducts extensive experiments to demonstrate the scheme's effectiveness and efficiency. Experiments show that CIS reduces 29% to 71% on the average weighted inference latency compared to the other four existing schemes.
A pump design system was constructed by several integrating in-house programs and commercial softwares to design and evaluate centrifugal pumps. An agent-based prototype framework has been developed for collaborative design and optimization of a centrifugal pump. This paper introduces the feasible technology needed to construct a pump design system based on software agents. The integrated design system, developed in the present study, was used in designing a centrifugal pump and modifying its impeller shape by using optimization processes to increase the pump performance.
