  • There are various characteristics called for in work roll and intermediate rolls for cold rolling mills. Among these characteristics, the two main requirements are to ensure the quality of the rolled products and to reduce roll cost. To achieve these needs, resistance to wear, to thermal shock and to contact fatigue are especially important. This paper describes that new material(named DSR1) for intermediate rolls which greatly increases rolling campaign and improves resistance to wear has been developed. DSR1 was successfully manufactured and has been used in the cold rolling mill. It showed that Trial product was homogenous in hardness distribution and sufficient usable diameter. Also in service test, trial product is much more excellent rolling performance than conventional $5\%Cr$.

  • A constitutive equation of the electrical steel strip used for a raw material of transformer is proposed. The stress-strain behavior of electrical steel strip is quite different from that of common carbon steel and/or alloy steel. A series of tensile tests were performed with the specimens made from cold rolled strip. Several thicknesses of the strip were produced by a two-high (with upper and lower rolls) cold rolling pilot mill as reduction ratio increases from 10% to 90%. Its initial thickness of the strip was 2.5mm. Tensile specimens are cut out from the cold rolled strips. Mechanical properties of the steel are examined through rolling direction. Ramberg-Osgood model and the proposed equation are combined to describe the total behavior of stress-strain including instability region. The stress-strain curves calculated from the present constitutive equation are compared with those from experimentally obtained at each test condition of reduction ratios of specimen. Results show that the predicted stress-strain curves are in overall in a good agreement with measured ones.

  • In order to reduce the length of off-gauge at FGC(Flying gauge change) point, We adopted dynamic set up in No. 4 cold rolling mill. The conventional set-up of FGC(Flying gauge change) was calculated on the basis of preset values in the process control computer, so the difference between actual strip thickness and preset thickness cause long off-gauge. The dynamic SET-UP control was calculated on the basis of actual strip thickness of FGC(Flying gauge change) point from X-ray gauge of mill entry and No.i stand. We applied dynamic SET-UP control in September last year. Compare to the previous result, the length of off-gauge is reduced by about 36%.

  • The investigation deals with the process design in cold rolling mill of electric plant. In this study, multiple objective optimization is conducted by a genetic algorithm, where the fitness values are evaluated on the basis of one - dimensional model of flat rolling. The approach is applied to the determination of the process conditions which are optimal with regard to minimization of roll power and maximization of productivity.

  • The horizontal force acting on a work roll was examined. This force results from the contact force between the work roll and backup roll in a backup-roll-drive 4-high cold-rolling mill. This horizontal force bends the work roll horizontally and therefore exerts reciprocal action on the roll-gap contour. An analytical model for predicting the horizontal force acting on a work roll, which generates a mean value in the steady state, was presented. The material used for the analysis was high-silicon steel (about 3% Si). A three-dimensional finite element (FE) model was also employed to investigate the non-steady-state behavior of the horizontal force. Results showed that the horizontal force varied with the off-center distance between the work roll and backup roll. In addition, the optimal off-center distance was determined to minimize the horizontal force.

  • Cold rolling mill process in steel works uses stands of rolls to flatten a strip to a desired thichness. At Pohang Iron and Steel Company (POSCO) in Pohang, Korea, precalculation determines the mill settings before a strip actually enters the mill and is done by an outdated mathematical model. A corrective neural network model is proposed to improve the accuracy of the roll force prediction. Additional variables to be fed to the network include the chemical composition of the coil, its coiling temperature and the aggregated amount of processed strips of each roll. The network was trained using a standard backpropagation with 2,277 process data collected form POSCO from March 1995, then was tested on the unseen 200 data from the same period. The combined model reduced the prediction error by 55.4% on average.

  • A cold roll-bonding process is applied to fabricate an AA6061/AA5052/AA6061 three-layer clad sheet. Two AA6061 and one AA5052 sheets of 2 mm thickness, 40 mm width, and 300 mm length are stacked, with the AA5052 sheet located in the center. After surface treatment such as degreasing and wire brushing, sample is reduced to a thickness of 1.5 mm by multi-pass cold rolling. The rolling is performed at ambient temperature without lubricant using a 2-high mill with a roll diameter of 400 mm at rolling speed of 6.0 m/sec. The roll bonded AA6061/AA5052/AA6061 complex sheet is then hardened by natural aging(T4) and artificial aging(T6) treatments. The microstructures of the as-roll bonded and age-hardened Al complex sheets are revealed by optical microscopy; the mechanical properties are investigated by tensile testing and hardness testing. After rolling, the roll-bonded AA6061/AA5052/AA6061 sheets show a typical deformation structure in which grains are elongated in the rolling direction. However, after T4 and T6 aging treatment, there is a recrystallization structure consisting of coarse equiaxed grains in both AA5052 and AA6061 sheets. The as roll-bonded specimen shows a sandwich structure in which an AA5052 sheet is inserted into two AA6061 sheets with higher hardness. However, after T4 and T6 aging treatment, there is a different sandwich structure in which the hardness of the upper and lower layers of the AA6061 sheets is higher than that of the center of the AA5052 sheet. The strength values of the T4 and T6 age-treated specimens are found to increase by 1.3 and 1.4 times, respectively, compared to that value of the starting material.

  • A cold roll-bonding process was applied to fabricate an AA1050/AA6061/AA1050 laminate complex sheet. Two AA1050 and one AA6061 sheets of 2 mm thickness, 40 mm width and 300 mm length were stacked up after surface treatment that included degreasing and wire brushing; material was then reduced to a thickness of 3 mm by one-pass cold rolling. The laminate sheet bonded by the rolling was further reduced to 1.2 mm in thickness by conventional rolling. The rolling was performed at ambient temperature without lubricant using a 2-high mill with a roll diameter of 210 mm. The rolling speed was 5.0 m/sec. The AA1050/AA6061/AA1050 laminate complex sheet fabricated by roll bonding was then hardened by natural aging T4) and artificial aging (T6) treatments. The microstructures of the as-roll bonded and the age hardened Al complex sheets were revealed by optical microscope observation; the mechanical properties were investigated by tensile testing and hardness testing. The strength of the as-roll bonded complex sheet was found to increase by 2.9 times compared to that value of the starting material. In addition, the hardness of the complex sheets increased with cold rolling for AA1050 and age-hardening treatment for AA6061, respectively. After heat treatment, both AA1050 and AA6061 showed typical recrystallization structures in which the grains were equiaxed; however, the grain size was smaller in AA6061 than in AA1050.

  • Flatness of strip at aluminum cold rolling is one of the important quality parameters of rolled products. The reasons for this are perhaps obvious: for many of the end uses, subsequent processing requires a flat product poor flatness on-line can lead to reduced running speeds and hence to lower production levels. Amongst the reasons for lower running speeds is the increased risk of strip breaks. The Alcan Ulsan plant developed an automatic flatness control system on conventional four high mills for a year. This system compose of three parts as Intel RMX 3.3 operating system, advanced techniques, and flatness error analysis system. Strip flatness be measured by air bearing roll, passing the s...
