The breakup characteristics of liquid sheets formed by like-doublet injector were investigated in the cold-flow and atmospheric ambient pressure condition. The sheet breakup wavelength, which induces the sheet to be broken into ligaments, as well as the sheet breakup length, which is important for the flame location, was measured using a stroboscopic light. The liquid ligaments are formed intermittently after the breakup of sheet, and the wavelength of ligaments has been believed to have a relation to the combustion instability of liquid rocket engine. Therefore, the wavelength of ligaments and the breakup length of ligaments into fine drops were also measured. Since these spray characteristics are affected by the flow characteristics of two liquid jets before they impinge on each other, we focused on the effects of orifice internal flow such as the cavitation phenomenon that occurs inside the sharp-edged orifice. From the experimental results, we found that the liquid jet turbulence delays the sheet breakup and makes shorter wavelengths for both sheets and ligaments. Since the turbulent strength of sharp-edged orifice is stronger than that of round-edged orifice, the shape of orifice entrance results in large differences in the spray characteristics. Using these results, we proposed empirical models on the spray characteristics of the like-doublet injector, and these models are believed to provide some useful and actual data for designing liquid rocket combustors.
The effervescent atomizer is one of twin-fluid atomizers that aeration gas enters into bulk liquid and two-phase flow is formed in the mixing section. The effervescent atomizer requires low injection pressure and small amount of aeration gas, as compared to other twin-fluid atomizers. In this study, cold flow test was conducted to investigate the spray characteristics of aerated impinging jets. The present effervescent impinging atomizers were composed of the aerator device and like-on-like doublet impinging atomizer which had different impinging angles. To analyze the spray characteristics such as breakup length and droplet size distribution, the image processing technique was adopted by using instantaneous images at each flow condition. Non-dimensional parameters, induced by the homogeneous flow model, were used to predict the breakup length. The breakup length was decreased with the mixture Reynolds number and impinging angle increasing. The result of droplets showed that the size distribution was axisymmetric about the center of the injector and their diameter tended to decrease with increasing GLR.

To improve the mixing and atomizing performance at the center region of the conventional coaxial shear injector spray, the concept of a coaxial porous injector was invented. This novel injection concept for liquid rocket engines utilizes the Taylor-Culick flow in the cylindrical porous tube. The 2-dimensional injector, which can be converted in three injection configurations, was fabricated, and several cold flow tests using water-air simulant propellant was performed. The hydraulic characteristics and the effects of a gas flow condition on the spray pattern and the Sauter mean diameter (SMD) was analyzed for each configuration. The atomizing mechanism of coaxial porous injector was different with the coaxial shear injector, and it was explained by the momentum of the gas jet, which is injected normally against the center liquid column, and by the secondary disintegration at the wavy interface of liquid jet, which was generated at the recessed region. The SMD of 2D coaxial porous injector, which has higher gas momentum, was measured and it shows better atomizing performance at the center and outer side of spray than the 2D coaxial shear injector.
Cu-Sn based alloys were manufactured by gas atomization spray casting route in order to achieve a fine scale microstructure and a high tensile strength. The spray cast Cu-10Sn-2Ni-0.2Si alloy had an equiaxed grain microstructure, with no formation of brittle ${\delta}-Cu_{41}Sn_{11}$ phase. Aging treatment promoted the precipitation of finely distributed particles corresponding to ${\delta}-Ni_2Si$ intermetallic phase throughout the $\alpha$-(CuSn) matrix. The cold-rolled Cu-Sn-Ni-Si alloy had a very high tensile strength of 1200 MPa and an elongation of 5%. Subsequent aging treatment at $450^{\circ}C$ for 1h slightly reduced the tensile strength to 700 MPa and remarkably increased the elongation up to 30%. This result has been explained by coarsening the precipitates due to over aging and reducing the dislocation density due to annealing effects.

This study was conducted on a high-temperature/high-pressure washer in which low-pressure cold water in a boiler is heated to a temperature range of $70{\sim}80^{\circ}C$ by supplying diesel combustion heat. The high-temperature water is sent to a compressor to increase its pressure to 200 bar, thereby making high-temperature/high-pressure water, which is sprayed through a spray nozzle. In the results of this study, the spray temperature of the high-pressure washing was shown to be the highest when the ratio between the actual amount of combustible air and the theoretical amount of air was 1:1 and the energy consumption rate of the low-pressure boiler type high-pressure washer was shown to be much lower than that of the high-pressure boiler type high-pressure washer.

To understand the atomization performance in gas-liquid swirl-coaxial injector applied to a small rocket engine, a cold-flow test was performed by varying the design parameters and supply condition of propellants. As the swirl-chamber diameter and the angle of the convergent section, which are design parameters of injector increased, the spray performance of the injector improved by increasing the swirl strength. In addition, as the gas-liquid momentum-flux ratio increased, the gas flow separated some of the droplets from the liquid film, and a gas-droplet mixture core was formed in the center of the spray sheet.

This study was conducted to develop a test facility that simulates the combustion instability that occurs in a real-scale liquid rocket combustor. A separate engine head with 3 injectors arranged in a row was designed/manufactured and verified through preliminary tests. The flow rate and spray pattern of the head were confirmed by the cold flow test. Next, propellant spray test and combustion test were carried out. A preliminary combustion test was carried out at 10 bar and the combustion chamber pressure was measured to be significantly lower than the target pressure. This is because it was a low pressure test, and it is expected to be resolved in the high pressure test in the future.
In this paper, the atomization characteristics of bi-swirl coaxial injectors for a 420 N-class bipropellant thruster were investigated. Three types of injectors, namely closed-type, open-type, and screw-type, were manufactured and designed to have the same spray angle and injection pressure drop. Water was used as a simulant, and cold-flow tests were conducted under ambient temperature and pressure conditions. Since the inner and outer injectors were designed to be the same type, only the inner fuel injectors that were easy to measure were used. Using a phase doppler particle analyzer, the velocity and diameter of atomized droplets were measured. Closed-type swirl injector exhibited droplet distributions with relatively high velocities and small SMD compared to the other two injectors. Open-type swirl injector formed droplets with reverse velocities in the center region and had a large recirculation zone. Screw-type swirl injector showed a sharp decrease in droplet velocity and size with radial distance from the liquid film breakup point. For the same design requirements, the closed-type swirl injector has superior atomization performance.

Both numerical analysis and experiment of cold and hot tests were performed to obtain basic design data for the swirl coaxial type Injector and to predict the combustion performance. Mass distribution, mixing distribution, mixing efficiency, characteristic velocity efficiency were measured by the cold tests and numerical analysis using the commercial thermo-hydraulic program. Test and analysis variables were recess, pressure drop, velocity ratio, mixing spray, mixture ratio. Hot tests were performed for the Uni-element injector to compare the performance with the cold test results, and, hot tests for Multi-element injector were performed to compare the performance with Uni-element injector. Designed thrust of the Uni-element injector liquid rocket was 35kgf at sea level and combustion chamber pressure, 20bar. Kerosene and Lox were used as a propellant.
