불면증의 비약물학적 치료 (Nonpharmacological Treatment of Insomnia)

  • Several nonpharmacological treatment methods of insomnia and their effects were reviewed. A long-term use of most hypnotics may produce tolerance, dependence, cognitive and psychomotor impairments at daytime, shallow sleep, and rebound insomnia on drug withdrawal. To reduce hypnotic abuse, nonpharmacological strategies have been developed to correct disordered behavioral and cognitive factors. These treatments aim at modifying maladaptive sleep habits, lowering physiological and cognitive arousal levels, and correcting dysfuctional beliefs and attitudes about sleep. These non-pharmacological or cognitive behavior treatments include stimulus control, sleep restriction, relaxation training, sleep hygiene education, cognitive therapy, and light therapy. Among them the stimulus control therapy has been demonstrated most effective as a single treatment or in combination with other treatments. Through nonpharmacological treatments, sleep latency was most significantly reduced and wake time after sleep onset was also reduced. About 50% of insomniacs reported clinical improvements in terms of nearly normalized sleep latency, awakening time, sleep efficiency, and reduction of hypnotic use. Compared to the hypnotic therapy, nonpharmacological treatments are more cost-effective and more readily accepted by patients, and their effects last longer.

  • In this research report, we are presenting several optimization models for cognitive systems by using stimulus-response matrix (S-R Matrix). Stimulus-response matrices are widely used for tabulating results from various experiments and cognition systems design in which the recognition and confusability of stimuli. This paper is relevant to analyze the optimization/mathematical programming models. The weakness and restrictions of the existing models are resolved by generalization considering average confusion of each subset of stimuli. Also, clustering strategies are used in the extended model to obtain centers of cluster in terms of minimal confusion as well as the character of each cluster.

  • Object : This study was designed to assess the change of heart rate variability (HRV) during stimulation test among the patients with major depressive disorder. Methods : 15 patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and 15 normal controls were enrolled in this study. We sequentially measured HRV at baseline, during cognitive stimuli and emotional stimuli. Results : There are significant differences between the two groups in HRV index, TINN on baseline state and under cognitive stimulus. Conclusion : Stimulation protocol using HRV can be useful in estimating autonomic nervous function.

긍정적 감정에 따른 선언적 지식에 관한 비전형적 연상 과정에 대한 인지모델링 (Cognitive Modeling of Unusual Association with Declarative Knowledge by Positive Affect)

  • The aim of this study was to model unusual association with declarative knowledge by positive affect using ACT-R cognitive architecture. Existing research related with cognitive modeling tends to pay a lot of attention to strong and negative cognitive moderator. Mild positive affect, however, has far-reaching effects on problem solving and decision making. Typically, subjects with positive affect were more likely to respond to unusual associates in a word association task than subjects with neutral affect. In this study, a cognitive model using ACT-R cognitive architecture was developed to show the effect of positive affect on the cognitive organization related with memory. First, we organized the memory structure of stimulus word 'palm' based on published results in a word association task. Then, we decreased an ACT-R parameter that reflects the amount of weighting given to the dissimilarity between the stimulus word and the associate word to represent reorganized memory structure of the model by positive affect. As a result, no significant associate probability difference between model prediction and existing empirical data was found. The ACT-R cognitive architecture could be used to model the effect of positive affect on the unusual association by decreasing (manipulating) the weight of the dissimilarity. This study is useful in conducting model-based evaluation of the effects of positive affect in complex tasks involving memory, such as creative problem solving.

문화성향-내외 통제소재 조합 유형에 따른 전역/국소 처리에서의 차이 (Relative Effects of Cultural Orientation-LOC Types on Global/Local Processing)

  • 동일 문화권에서의 문화성향(개인주의 vs. 집단주의)-내외 통제소재(내통제 vs. 외통제) 조합 유형에 따라 복합 자극에 대한 전역/국소 처리에서 차이가 있는지 검토하기 위해 자극 유형(복합도형과 복합문자)과 자극-자극 속성 일치 여부가 조작된 실험조건에서 실험참가자들이 보인 반응시간과 오반응률을 비교하였다. 본 연구의 주요 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 자극-자극 속성이 일치하는 조건에서의 전역 처리가 가장 빨랐던 반면, 자극-자극 속성 불일치 조건에서의 국소 처리가 가장 느렸다. 둘째, 복합문자에 비해 복합도형에 대한 반응시간이 더 짧았다. 셋째, 복합도형과는 달리 복합문자의 경우 두 가지 문화성향 모두에서 내적 통제소재보다는 외적 통제소재 경향의 실험참가자들에게서 전역선행성이 관찰되었다. 이런 결과는 동일한 문화권인 경우, 문화성향보다는 내외 통제소재와 같은 성격요인에서의 개인차가 전역/국소 처리에서의 차이를 더 민감하게 반영할 수 있다는 것과, 이런 개인차 변인은 지각수준보다는 좀 더 고차의 인지수준에 관여한다는 것을 시사한다.

Consumer Perceptions on SST in Retail Atmosphere: An application of S-O-R framework

  • Purpose: The aim of this study is to understand the internal and external responses that consumers experience when they are exposed to an innovative system in retail stores. This study considered the SST(Self-Service Technology) system in a retail setting as a type of functional environmental stimuli and selected a smart shopping cart as an example of SST system. The influences of functional environmental stimuli on consumers' emotional, cognitive, and behavioral responses were examined by applying S-O-R model. In addition, this study attempted to extend the traditional S-O-R model by (a) incorporating personal characteristics variables such as time pressure and perceived crowding and (b) considering not only emotional but also cognitive aspects of consumers' internal responses. Research Design, Data, and Methodology: This study used a video-scenario technique. Participants watched a video about grocery shopping situations using a smart shopping cart and responded to their emotional, cognitive, and behavioral responses. An online survey was conducted using Amazon's Mechanical Turk (N = 185). All participants were US consumers over 20 years old and had been shopping at the grocery store in the last month. Data were analyzed through structural equations modeling with AMOS 20. Results: Test results showed that consumers who perceived higher levels of time pressure and perceived crowding in usual shopping situations were more likely to evaluate the SST system favorably. The results showed that personal characteristics have a significant impact on consumers' evaluation of functional environmental stimuli in retail setting. As consumers evaluated the SST system favorably, they experienced more positive affect and less negative affect during their shopping behaviors. Positive affect led to good service quality inference, which further increased patronize intention. However, negative affect did not show a significant impact on service quality inference, but only on patronize intention. Conclusions: This study attempted to investigate the influence of SST system by extending the traditional S-O-R model. This study classified the SST system as functional environmental stimulus of retail stores and analyzed the effect of stimulus on consumers' internal and external responses. The results of this study showed that the introduction of innovative SST can serve as an effective store differentiation strategy in an increasingly competitive retail environment.

학습자 언어 인지 능력 기반의 외국어 능숙도 측정 방법 설계 및 개발 (Design and Development of the Second language Proficiency Method based on Cognitive Ability of Learner)

  • 본 논문은 뇌에서 발생하는 언어와 관련된 현상들을 모델링하여 외국어 능숙도 측정 방법을 설계 및 개발하였다. 이 방법은 인지 심리학에서 인지능력을 측정하는 방법에 기반하며, 어휘 판단 과제, 언어 점화 과제, 구어 작업 기억 능력 측정 과제로 나뉜다. 어휘 판단 과제는 자극에 대해 단어인지 비 단어인지를 얼마나 빠르게 판단하는 지를 측정한다. 어휘 판단 과제는 세부적으로 자극의 형태에 따라 읽기와 듣기로 나뉜다. 언어 점화 과제는 언어의 산출 능력을 측정한다. 언어 점화 과제는 자극에 따라 의미적 점화 과제, 번역 점화 과제로 나뉜다. 구어 작업 기억 능력은 학습자의 단기 기억력을 측정한다. 본 논문에서는 제2외국어에 대한 학습자의 언어 인지능력을 사용하여 외국어 능숙도를 측정하는 방법을 제안한다.

A Study on the Illusory Correlation Effect of Clothing Style(I)

  • Illusory Correlation Effect(ICE) is a cognitive error that arises from overestimating particular stimulus of an individual or a group. This may cause formation of stereotypes of the individual or the group and may also lead to generating various biased judgments. this study investigated the Illusory Correlation Effect of clothing style and considered the effect of Preview information. The results Provided evidence for the existence of an illusory correlation between a wearer and clothing style. Also, an illusory correlation was influenced information of stimuli attributes. This implies subjects perceived stimuli more distinctively when previous information was provided.

A Study on the Effect of Pre-cue in Simple Reactions on Control-on-Display Interfaces

  • Objective: This study focuses on the effects of pre-cues informing the location of upcoming visual stimulus on finger movement response in the context of control-on-display interfaces. Background: Previous research on pre-cues focus on attention allocation and motion studies were limited to indirect control conditions. The design of this study aimed to collect data on the exact landing point for finger-tap responses to a given visual stimulus. Method: Controlled visual stimuli and tasks were presented on a UI evaluation system built using mobile web standards; response accuracy and response time were measured and collected as appropriate. Among the 16 recruited participants, 11 completed the experiment. Results: Providing pre-cue on the location of stimulus affected response time and response accuracy. The response bias, which is a distance from the center of stimulus to the finger-tap location, was larger when the pre-cue was given during a one-handed operation. Conclusion: Given a pre-cue, response time decreases, but with accuracy penalized. Application: In designing touch-screen UI's - more strictly, visual components also acting as controllers - designers would do well to balance human perceptual and cognitive characteristics strategically.

유발된 정서가에 따른 계산 요동의 효과 (Arithmetic Fluctuation Effect affected by Induced Emotional Valence)

  • 본 연구는 유발된 정서가 뒤따르는 수 연산과제에 미치는 간섭현상의 종류와 크기를 확인해 보기 위해 수행되었다. 유발된 정서상태의 유지가 작업기억 요소 간 원활한 수행을 간섭할 수 있는 단계별 인지과제 처리 과정을 통해 자극유형 및 정서의 종류가 기초 연산(fundamental arithmetic operation)과제 수행에 미치는 영향을 알아 보았다. 피험자는 인구학적 변인에서 거의 차이가 없는 균질적인 대학생 집단으로 구성되었으며, 사전 연습시행에서 표정모방을 통해 유발된 정서를 유지하면서 후속되는 연산과제 수행 및 제시되는 답의 정오를 판단하도록 지침을 받았다. 분석결과, 자극유형 간에 간섭의 크기에서는 차이가 없었으나 유발된 정서의 종류 간에는 차이가 발견되었다. 유발된 정서의 시간지연 주효과가 계산과정의 어느 단계에 영향을 주었는지를 알아보기 위해, 자극 유형별로 정서 간 오류율과 지연 정반응률을 구하여 함께 분석하였는데, 긍정정서(기쁨조건)의 시간지연이 문장자극일 때에는 오류율 간 차이로, 그림자극일 때에는 지연 정반응률 간 차이로 나타남을 확인하였다. 이와 같은 결과는 유발된 긍정 정서의 영향이 부정정서(분노 및 슬픔 조건)에 비해 계산지연을 확대시키는 방향으로 나타났다는 점 외에 문장자극의 정서유발이 계산실패로 이어지기 쉬운 반면, 그림자극의 정서유발은 계산요동으로 이어지기 쉬운 특성이 있는 것으로 그 주효과의 영향이 분리될 수 있음을 시사한다고 하겠다.
