Construction and Validation of a Cognitive Presence Scale for Measuring Online Learners' Engagement

  • Cognitive presence, a sense of "being there" cognitively, has recently been considered as an important indicator for students' engagement in e-learning. There is, however, no widely accepted scale to measure the level of cognitive presence since most studies have put their effort to set and clarify the conceptual framework with qualitative methodology. This study reviewed existing theories on cognitive presence and related fields extensively and developed a new self-report scale for measuring the conceived level of cognitive presence. The reliability and validity of the scale was tested against 723 undergraduate students in two consecutive studies, 418 in the preliminary and 305 in the follow-up study. Three major constructs to measure the perceived level of cognitive presence were: 1) clear understanding, 2) knowledge construction, and 3) learning management. This paper reports the final results of the two independent studies.

  • 본 연구는 사이버대학에서 교수실재감, 인지적 실재감, 사회적 실재감과 학습성과와의 구조적 인과관계를 분석하여 사이버교육의 개발 및 운영전략 모색에 기초자료를 제공하려고 한다. 2009년 1학기, W사이버대학생을 802명을 대상으로 교수실재감, 인지적 실재감, 사회적 실재감 및 학습성과를 조사하고 이들간의 관계를 분석하였다. 연구 결과 첫째, 교수실재감과 인지적 실재감은 만족도에 유의한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 인지적 실재감은 학업성취도에 유의한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과를 바탕으로 사이버대학에서의 사이버교육의 질 제고를 위해 요구되는 교수설계 및 운영전략을 제언하였다.

  • 연구 목적 : 본 연구의 목적은 학업성취에 가장 중요한 영향을 미치는 요인 중에서 흥미수준에 따라서 인지적 실재감이 몰입에 미치는 영향을 탐색하기 위한 것이다. 연구 내용 및 방법 : 본 연구는 B대학의 사범학부에서 교직교과목을 수강한 162명을 대상으로 했다. 연구를 위해 흥미수준, 인지적 실재감, 몰입을 설문을 통해 자료를 수집했다. 수집된 자료는 흥미 수준에 따라 인지적 실재감이 몰입에 어떠한 영향을 주는지 검증하기 위해, 흥미 수준의 평균을 기준으로 저집단과 고집단으로 구분하여 다중 회귀 분석을 수행하였다. 그 결과 흥미수준 고집단에서 인지적 실재감의 하위요인 학습 관리 정도가 .071이며, 흥미수준 저집단에서 인지적 실재감의 하위요인 학습 관리 정도가 .143 수준으로 정적인 영향이 있었다. 결론 및 제언 : 이와 같은 결과로, 흥미수준에 따라서 인지적 실재감의 학습 관리 정도가 몰입에 미치는 영향이 확인되었다. 본 연구 결과를 통해 몰입에 있어서 인지적 실재감 지원을 통해 흥미수준을 향상할 수 있는 수업설계 전략을 제언하였다.

  • 연구 목적 : 본 연구는 인지조절에 대한 인지적 실재감의 영향에 대한 학습동기의 조절효과 탐색이 목적이다. 연구 내용 및 방법 : 본 연구는 대학의 사범학부에 재학중인 예비교사 160명을 대상으로 인지조절, 인재적 실재감, 학습동기를 설문조사를 통해 측정하였다. 수집된 자료 중 학습동기는 평균을 산출하여, 학습동기가 낮은 집단과 높은 집단을 구분하였다. 연구의 목적을 성취하기 위해서 학습동기 수준에 따라 인지조절 수준의 평균을 비교하였고, 인지조절에 대한 인지적 실재감의 영향을 탐색하기 위해 다중회귀(선택적 방법)분석을 수행하였다. 먼저 전체 집단을 대상으로 다중회귀 분석을 수행하였고, 다음으로 학습동기가 낮은 집단과 높은 집단을 구분하여 다중회귀 분석을 수행하였다. 결론 및 제언 : 분석 결과 학습동기가 높은 집단이 낮은 집단보다 인지조절 수준이 높게 나타났고, 학습동기가 높은 집단은 인지절 실재감의 하위요인 중 내용이해만 인지조절에 영향이 나타났고, 낮은 집단은 인지적 실재감의 모든 하위요인이 영향을 주었다.

Affective and Cognitive Social Presence in Chinese Live Commerce -Consumption Value as a Mediator-

  • This study aims to clarify the implications of rapidly growing live commerce in China by examining the multifaceted aspects of social presence, in particular to help small commerce operators and platform companies. It examines the effect of cognitive and affective social presence on consumer engagement by evaluating consumption values and trust in streamers. In this survey study, the responses of 221 individuals residing in large cities of China were analyzed using structural equation modeling. The results showed that cognitive social presence had a positive effect on consumer engagement by mediating the utilitarian value and trust in streamers. Furthermore, affective social presence had a positive effect on consumer engagement through the hedonic value and trust in streamers. Thus, our research provides a new perspective to approaching a multidimensional social presence and understanding consumer behavior in live commerce. Moreover, it contributes to the application and expansion of social presence theory in this field.

The Mediating Effect of Learning Flow on Relationship between Presence, Learning Satisfaction and Academic Achievement in E-learning

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the mediating effect of learners' learning flow in the effect of presence on academic achievement in web-based e-learning. For this purpose, this study analyzed the influencing relationship between the each factor based on the structural model with the learning flow as a mediator variable. Based on existing theoretical studies, learning satisfaction and academic achievement, which represent learning outcomes, are set as dependent variables, and teaching presence, cognitive presence, and social presence are set as independent variables. Data collected from a total of 256 e-learning learners were used in the analysis of this study. According to the results of the analysis, teaching presence, cognitive presence, and social presence were found to have a significant effect on academic achievement when a learning flow is a mediator variable. Concretely, teaching presence, cognitive presence, and social presence have a positive effect on the learning flow, while learning flow has a positive effect on learning satisfaction. On the other hand, learning flow has a negative effect on academic achievement. As a result of verifying the mediating effect of learning flow on the relationship between presence, learning satisfaction, and academic achievement, there was meditating effect in the aggregate. This study implies that in order to increase the level of learning satisfaction and academic achievement, it is necessary to make the teaching-learning design in the provision of contents and materials for e-learning so that the learner can feel the presence. The results of this study can be used as a basic data for seeking support and promotion strategies for enhancement of future learning flow and presence.

비대면 강의 상황에서 대학생들의 학습실재감, 학습 몰입 및 학습 환경에 대한 인식 연구 - 항공운항학과 학생들을 중심으로 - (A Research on the University Students's Perception on the Learning Presence, Learning Immersion, and Learning Environment under the Non-face-to-face Lecture Circumstance - Focusing on Students from Department of Flight Operation -)

  • In this study we conducted a research regarding the effect on learning immersion and perception of the learning environment by learning presence of students in the Department of aeronautical science and flight operation in the context of non-face-to-face lectures caused by COVID-19. The relationship between learning presence (cognitive presence, emotional presence, and social presence) and learning commitment showed a high correlation. The learning immersion was also found to increase when cognitive presence, emotional presence, and social presence increased in multiple regression analysis to find out the effects of cognitive presence, emotional presence, and social presence, which are sub-factors of learning presence. The advantage of non-face-to-face classes was to be the ease of learning, and the disadvantage of non-face-to-face classes was the most difficulty of the learning process in the content analysis of the non-face-to-face class environment.

  • For the purpose of enhancing the use of social service in classrooms, this research focuses on the relationships between presence and learning flow, key words in the analysis of college classes using Facebook. The results of this study are as follow. First, social presence(${\ss}=.33$, p=.000), emotional presence(${\ss}=.29$, p= .000), cognitive presence(${\ss}=.20$, p= .010) were found to be significant according to cognitive flow experience the result of analysis of multiple regression. all regression coefficients were positive. Second, emotional presence(${\ss}=.42$, p=.000) and social presence(${\ss}=.27$, p=.000), cognitive, presence(${\ss}=.17$, p=.015) were found to be significant according to emotional flow experience the result of analysis of multiple regression. all regression coefficients were positive. Third, social presence(${\ss}=.37$, p=.000) of the three variables were found to be significant according to behavioral flow experience the result of analysis of multiple regression.

A Cooperative Spectrum Sensing Scheme Using Fuzzy Logic for Cognitive Radio Networks

  • This paper proposes a novel scheme for cooperative spectrum sensing on distributed cognitive radio networks. A fuzzy logic rule - based inference system is proposed to estimate the presence possibility of the licensed user's signal based on the observed energy at each cognitive radio terminal. The estimated results are aggregated to make the final sensing decision at the fusion center. Simulation results show that significant improvement of the spectrum sensing accuracy is achieved by our schemes.

  • Cognitive radio systems are being implemented recently to tackle spectrum underutilization problems and aid efficient data traffic. Spectrum sensing is the crucial step in cognitive applications in which cognitive user detects the presence of primary user (PU) in a particular channel thereby switching to another channel for continuous transmission. In cognitive radio systems, the capacity to precisely identify the primary user's signal is essential to secondary user so as to use idle licensed spectrum. Based on the inherent capability, a new spectrum sensing technique is proposed in this paper to identify all types of primary user signals in a cognitive radio condition. Hence, a spectrum sensing algorithm using improved convolutional neural network and long short-term memory (CNN-LSTM) is presented. The principle used in our approach is simulated annealing that discovers reasonable number of neurons for each layer of a completely associated deep neural network to tackle the streamlining issue. The probability of detection is considered as the determining parameter to find the efficiency of the proposed algorithm. Experiments are carried under different signal to noise ratio to indicate better performance of the proposed algorithm. The PU signal will have an associated modulation format and hence identifying the presence of a modulation format itself establishes the presence of PU signal.
