  • Recently there has been increasing emphasis on pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) for fostering science teachers' teaching professionalism that needs to be done from teacher training courses systematically. We investigated what were the PCK factors considered in planning instruction and the difficulties encountered in implementing it by pre-service teachers. In this study, 26 sophomores at an university of education in Gyeonggi province were asked to perform teaching demonstrations using scientific instruction models. They were also requested to write reflective journals and interview. Analyses of the results revealed that many pre-service teachers considered the teaching strategies such as the instruction organization and implementation when planning instruction. They had also regard to the learners' cognitive affective aspects, whereas the pre-knowledge of them was not properly considered. Especially, the curriculum and assessment were almost disregarded. Most of the difficulties encountered in planning instruction and implementing it were appeared in terms of the teaching strategies. For example, they had difficulties in considering the characteristics of each stage presented by the instruction models when planning instruction and implementing it. The frequencies of the difficulties in implementing experiment were especially higher than those of the other PCK factors. Educational implications of these findings are discussed.

  • This study attempted to determine the effects of a cooperative and cognitive group therapy compared to individual therapy in 24 aphasic subjects. Two dependent variables were measured overall language performance, functional communication skills. 18 subjects with different types and severity of aphasia participated in the group therapy. 6 aphasic subjects participated in the individual therapy and they functioned as a control group. The subjects were ranged from 27 to 59 years in age. The group therapy using the cooperative learning utilized the following procedures. First, 6 aphasics constituted 1 group where each subject peformed a task and they monitored one another. Second, 2 aphasics consisted 1 group and they cooperated to perform a task. Third, 3 groups with 2 aphasics in a group competed one another in a task where the 2 aphasics had to cooperated. Finally, the investigator gave the feedback to the group and she and the subjects discussed the overall procedures of the therapy. The above mentioned 2 tests were administered pre- and post-treatment. A repeated two-way ANOVA was performed for analysis. The results showed that the group therapy was more effective in improving overall language performance as compared to the individual therapy. And, the group therapy was more effective in increasing functional communication skills as compared to the individual therapy.

  • The abilities for 21st learners have recently changed and learners' engagement is emphasized. In flipped classroom, students learn the prerequisite concepts of the lecture online in advance and perform various types of activities based on interaction and engagement. As students in flipped classroom construct knowledge actively, students' engagement is very important. Therefore, I conducted a research of flipped mathematics class to help teachers to better understand students' engagement in flipped mathematics class. The flipped mathematics class was conducted for about 3 weeks with 29 middle school students and one teacher. Video and audio recordings, completed student worksheets and interview data were collected and analyzed using the qualitative method. The results of this study showed that students' engagement is influenced by diverse factors. Engagement factors were categorized by teacher factors, community factors, material factors, tasks and strategy factors, classroom culture factors. Each factor facilitates or suppresses behavioral, emotional, cognitive, agentic engagements, and sometimes several factors are related. The results of this study increase understanding of engagement through the example of a case study on flipped mathematics class.

  • Korean societal concern for the train accidents is fast and widely increasing with an ever-increasing demand and use for KTX. Most of these train accidents are inclined to be caused by human error. Experts used to attribute the causes of human error to the defects in various aspects such as technology, organizational system, practices, corporate culture, and/or human resource itself. Among the diverse causes of human error, an important one, even though it was rarely focused, may be the issue of impact of rule or procedure change on human error. Giving attention to the implicit importance of this issue, this study intends to highlight the theme of frequent procedure change in railway driving manual as a critical factor of human error. To attain this purpose mentioned above, dual methodologies were adopted. One is to qualitatively analyze the real cases of procedure change in relevant manuals followed by the incident case(passing the station scheduled to stop) happened lately. Another is to quantitatively perform statistical analysis based on questionnaires received from 224 train drivers. Results show that frequent changes in internal affairs procedure is or may be an important factor causing stress and human error from train drivers.

  • This study aimed to identify the effects of students' empathy ability on group creativity, when elementary school students perform scientific activity designed to express group creativity. A total of 12 elementary students from a fifth-grade science club participated in this study. A pretest to examine the students' empathic ability was performed to classify them into three groups: A group with high, low and heterogeneous empathic members. The linguistic interaction was analyzed to determine the process of group creativity manifestation; the results were classified into 'metacognitive', 'cognitive', and 'social-communicative'. As a result, groups with high empathic ability showed more frequent interaction in monitoring, planning, and divergent thinking. On the other hand, in the case of the group with low level of empathy, it was confirmed that there are many interactions related to regulation, convergent thinking, and noncohesive prosocial interaction. Also, in the case of heterogeneous group with empathy ability, group creativity utterance on all sides was relatively higher than other groups. As a result of this study, we could confirm the influence of empathy as a strategy to help the group creativity and discuss the educational implications.
