  • In order to convert MPEG-2 into H.264 format in ubiquitous communication environments, the efficient conversion of the discrete cosine transform (DCT) coefficients to H.264 transform coefficients is essential. In this paper, two efficient conversion systems are proposed. The proposed systems are composed of two parts. In the first part, the DCT coefficients are denoised using the lapped transform (LT) to reduce the quantization noises and blocking effects. In the second part, the denoised DCT coefficients are converted into the integer transform (IT) coefficients of H.264. Simulation results show that the proposed methods provide visually fine images. Moreover, the computational complexity of the proposed method is reduced compared with the conventional method, since the number of the DCT coefficients, which should be converted, is reduced in the first part.

  • This paper describes the hydrodynamic characteristics of a test-bed AUV SNUUV-I constructed at Seoul National University. The main purpose of the AUV is to carry out fundamental control and hydrodynamic experiments. Its configuration is basically a long cylinder of 1.35m in length and 0.25m in diameter with delta-type wings near its rear end. On the edge of each wing, a thruster of 1/4HP is mounted, which is used for both drive and turn the vehicle for horizontal movement as the output control power is varied. A pair of control surfaces installed near its font part generates pitch moments for vertical movement. The 6 DOF mathematical model of SNUUV-I contains hydrodynamic forces and moments expressed in terms of a set of hydrodynamic coefficients. These coefficients can be classified into linear damping coefficients, linear inertial coefficients and nonlinear damping coefficients. It is important to estimate the exact value of these coefficients to control the vehicle precisely. Among these, the linear coefficients are known to affect the motion of the vehicle dominantly. The linear damping coefficients are estimated by using Extended Kalman Filter. The responses of the vehicle to input signals are used to estimate the hydrodynamic coefficients, which can be inferred from output signals measured from an IMU (inertial motion unit) sensor, while the linear inertial coefficients are calculated by a potential code. By using these coefficients estimated as described above, a simulation program is constructed using Matlab.

  • Hydrodynamic coefficients strongly affect the dynamic performance of an AUV. Thus, it is important to know the true values of these coefficients, in order to accurately simulate the AUV's dynamic performance. Although these coefficients are generally obtained experimentally, such as through the PMM test, the measured values are not completely reliable because of experimental difficulties and errors. Another approach, by which these coefficients can be obtained, is the observer method, in which a model-based estimation algorithm estimates the coefficients. In this paper, the hydrodynamic coefficients are estimated using two nonlinear observers: a sliding mode observer and an extended Kalman filter. Their performances are evaluated in Matlab simulations, by comparing the estimated coefficients obtained from the two observer methods, with the experimental values as determined from the PMM test. A sliding mode controller is constructed for the diving and steering maneuver by using the estimated coefficients. It is demonstrated that the controller, applied with the estimated values, maintains the desired depth and path with sufficient accuracy.

  • A systematic numerical comparative study of the performance of semicircular and rectangular submerged breakwaters interacting with solitary waves is the basis of this paper. To accomplish this task, Nwogu's extended Boussinesq model equations are employed to simulate the interaction of the wave with breakwaters. The finite difference technique has been used to discretize the spatial terms while a fourth-order predictor-corrector method is employed for time discretization in our numerical model. The proposed computational scheme uses a staggered-grid system where the first-order spatial derivatives have been discretized with fourth-order accuracy. For validation purposes, five test cases are considered and numerical results have been successfully compared with the existing analytical and experimental results. The performances of the rectangular and semicircular breakwaters have been examined in terms of the wave reflection, transmission, and dissipation coefficients (RTD coefficients) denoted by KR, KT, KD. The latter coefficient KD emerges due to the non-energy conserving KR and KT. Our computational results and graphical illustrations show that the rectangular breakwater has higher reflection coefficients than semicircular breakwater for a fixed crest height, but as the wave height increases, the two reflection coefficients approach each other. un the other hand, the rectangular breakwater has larger dissipation coefficients compared to that of the semicircular breakwater and the difference between them increases as the height of the crest increases. However, the transmission coefficient for the semicircular breakwater is greater than that of the rectangular breakwater and the difference in their transmission coefficients increases with the crest height. Quantitatively, for rectangular breakwaters the reflection coefficients KR are 5-15% higher while the diffusion coefficients KD are 3-23% higher than that for the semicircular breakwaters, respectively. The transmission coefficients KT for rectangular breakwater shows the better performance up to 2.47% than that for the semicircular breakwaters. Based on our computational results, one may conclude that the rectangular breakwater has a better overall performance than the semicircular breakwater. Although the model equations are non-dissipative, the non-energy conserving transmission and reflection coefficients due to wave-breakwater interactions lead to dissipation type contribution.

  • Generally, reinforced concrete is one of the most commonly used structural materials and it prevents corrosion of steel bar by high pH of interior, But, as time elapsed, reinforced concrete structure become deteriorated by many of combined deterioration factors and environmental conditions. And, there are large number of deteriorate mechanism of the reinforced concrete structure and it acts complexly. It is recognized that steel bar corrosion is the main distress behind the present concern regarding concrete durability. In this study, to institute combined deterioration environments, established acceleration condition and cycle for combined deterioration environments has a resemblance to environments which are real structures placed. After that to confirm corrosion properties of reinforced concrete due to permeability with covering depth and types of surface cover under combined deterioration environments, measured carbonation velocity coefficients, chloride ion diffusion coefficients, water absorption coefficients, air permeability coefficients and electric potential, corrosion area ratio, weight reduction, corrosion velocity of steel bar. The results showed that an increase in age also decrease carbonation velocity coefficients, increase Chloride ion diffusion coefficients and increases water absorption coefficients. As well, an increase in age also increases corrosion of steel bar. Data on the development of corrosion velocity of steel bar with types of surface cover made with none, organic B, organic A, inorganic B, and inorganic A is shown. As well, permeability and corrosion velocity of steel bar with covering depth is superior to 10mm than 20mm. And it is confirmed permeability and corrosion properties of steel bar are closely related.

  • Four different data reduction methods for the heat transfer coefficients from experimental data under dehumidifying conditions are compared. The four methods consist of two heat and mass transfer models and two fin efficiency models. Data are obtained from two heat exchanger samples having plain fins or wave fins. Comparison of the reduced heat transfer coefficients revealed that the single potential heat and mass transfer model yielded the humidity-independent heat transfer coefficients. Two fin efficiency models-enthalpy model and humidity model-yielded approximately the same fin efficiencies, and accordingly approximately the same heat transfer coefficients. The heat transfer coefficients under wet conditions were approximately the same as those of the dry conditions for the plain fin configuration. For the wave fin configuration, however, wet surface heat transfer coefficients were approximately 12% higher. The pressure drops of the wet surface were 10% to 45% larger than those of the dry surface.

  • The prediction of fretting wear is a significant issue for the design of contacting mechanical components such as flexible couplings and splines, jointed structures and so on. In our earlier study, we developed a numerical model to predict the fretting wear using boundary element method. The developed algorithm needs experimental fretting wear coefficients and friction coefficients between two moving materials to get more reliable results. In this study, therefore, we demonstrated the measurement method of the fretting wear coefficients and friction coefficients using disk on plate tribometer with piazo actuator and gap sensor. For four different material combinations, the fretting wear coefficients and friction coefficients are acquired through the fretting wear experiment and the analysis of the measured values. Thess results are useful to predict the quantative fretting wear rate in the developed algorithm.

  • The anisotropic-diffusion convection equation with exponentially variable coefficients is discussed in this paper. Numerical solutions are found using a combined Laplace transform and boundary element method. The variable coefficients equation is usually used to model problems of functionally graded media. First the variable coefficients equation is transformed to a constant coefficients equation. The constant coefficients equation is then Laplace-transformed so that the time variable vanishes. The Laplace-transformed equation is consequently written as a boundary integral equation which involves a time-free fundamental solution. The boundary integral equation is therefore employed to find numerical solutions using a standard boundary element method. Finally the results obtained are inversely transformed numerically using the Stehfest formula to get solutions in the time variable. The combined Laplace transform and boundary element method are easy to implement and accurate for solving unsteady problems of anisotropic exponentially graded media governed by the diffusion convection equation.

  • We introduce the notion of two-scale convergence for partial differential equations with random coefficients that gives a very efficient way of finding homogenized differential equations with random coefficients. For an application, we find the homogenized matrices for linear second order elliptic equations with random coefficients. We suggest a natural way of finding the two-scale limit of second order equations by considering the flux term.
