Single-phase convection and nucleate boiling heat transfer were locally investigated for confined planar water jets. The detailed distributions of the wall temperature and the convection coefficient as well as the typical boiling curves were discussed. The curve for the single-phase convection indicated the developing laminar boundary layer, accompanied by monotonic increase of the wall temperature in the stream direction. Boiling was initiated from the furthest downstream as heat flux increased. Heat transfer variation according to the streamwise location was reduced as heat flux increased enough to create the vigorous nucleate boiling. Velocity effects were considered for the confined free-surface jet. Higher velocity of the jet caused the boiling incipient to be delayed more. The transition to turbulence precipitated by the bubble-induced disturbance was obvious only for the highest velocity, which enabled the boiling incipient to start in the middle of the heated surface, rather than the furthest downstream as was the case of the moderate and low velocities. The temperature at offset line were somewhat tower than those at the centerline for single-phase convection and partial boiling, and these differences were reduced as the nucleate boiling developed. For the region prior to transition, the convection coefficient distributions were similar in both cases while the temperatures were somewhat lower in the submerged jet. For single-phase convection, transition was initiated at $x/W{\cong}2.5$ and completed soon for the submerged jet, but the onset of transition was retarded to the distance at $x/W{\cong}6$ for the fee-surface jet.
The effect of concave curvature on the natural convection has been numerically studied using the higher-order finite difference method. The heating wall in a enclosure is approximated by a cosine function. The heat transfer coefficient is analyzed for three Rayleigh numbers and five amplitudes. For Ra = 10/sup 8/ the separation and reattachment are observed on the adiabatic walls. The wall heat transfer are slightly changed by the increasing curvatures.

Natural and forced convection experiments were carried out in order to investigate the effects of channel spacing gap between protrusions and number of rows of protrusion, In natural convection the optimum channel spacing was found to be approximately 20mm regardless of the protrusion gaps. For optimum channel spacing the heat transfer coefficients were converged to an asymptotic value after the fourth row. The heat transfer coefficient for each row approaches to constant values for protrusion gaps larger than 10 mm. An experimental correlation has been suggested by using a modified Rayleigh number based on the dimensionless characteristic length(G/L). In forced convec-tion the heat transfer coefficients were not merged to an asymptote until the fifty row and increases as the channel spacing at the constant Reynolds number decreases.

The solidification process of Al 4.5%Cu alloy is numerically studied in the presence of contact resistance between mold and cast. Natural convection is considered in the liquid and mushy regions. The porosity approach is applied to the mushy zone modeling and linear variation of the solid fraction on the temperature is assumed. Results show that the mushy region is wider in the case with a contact resistance compared to the perfect contact condition. The temperature of the cast with a temporal variation in the contact heat transfer coefficient changes very rapidly in the early stage of the casting process compared to that with constant contact heat transfer coefficient.

The unsteady conjugate forced convection-conduction heat transfer from a plate fin is numerically studied. The external forced flow is steady but the temperature of the fin base is an exponential change with time. Therefore, the unsteady energy equations of the fluid and the fin are solved simultaneously under the conditions of equality in heat flux and temperature at the fluid-fin interface at every instant of time. Numerical results are given for various quantities of interest including the local heat transfer coefficient, the local heat flux, the total heat transfer rate and the temperature distribution of fin under the effects of the convection-conduction parameter and the ratio of thermal diffusivities. The results of the present numerical solution have been compared with those of the conventional fin theory.

Many works on the temperature distribution of power apparatus have usually done by coupled magneto-thermal analysis. Such a method can not consider the internal gas or oil flow in the power apparatus such as gas insulated switchgear, GIS bus bar, and power transformer. Moreover it can not show the internal temperature distribution of the power apparatus exactly. This paper proposes a coupled magneto-thermal-flow analysis considering Navier-Stokes equations. The convection heat transfer coefficient is calculated analytically by applying Nusselt number for natural convection and is applied to the boundary condition of proposed method. Temperature distribution of the GIS bus bar model considering thermal flow is obtained by the proposed method and shows good agreement with the experimental data.
The setting and hardening of concrete is accompanied with nonlinear temperature distribution caused by development of hydration heat of cement. Especially at early ages, this nonlinear distribution has a large influence on the crack evolution. As a result, in order to predict the exact temperature history in concrete structures it is required to examine thermal properties of concrete. In this study, the coefficient of air convection, which presents thermal transfer between surface of concrete and air, was experimentally investigated with variables such as velocity of wind and types of form. From experimental results, the coefficient of air convection was calculated using equations of thermal equilibrium. Finally, the prediction model for equivalent coefficient of air convection including effects of velocity of wind and types of form was theoretically proposed. The coefficient of air convection in the proposed model increases with velocity of wind, and its dependance on wind velocity is varied with types of form. This tendency is due to a combined heat transfer system of conduction through form and convection to air. From comparison with experimental results, the coefficient of air convection by this model was well agreed with those by experimental results.
This paper analyzed the heat transfer characteristics on the outer surface of the ambient air vaporizer which received the heat from the air through natural convection by using numerical and experimental methods. The working fluid was a liquid nitrogen. The experimental variables were the length (2,000 mm, 1,800 mm, 1,600 mm) and width of the vaporizer fin and the fluid flow ($6.7m^3/h$, $7.1m^3/h$, $7.5m^3/h$). Based on the temperature data from the experiments, the heat transfer coefficient was calculated. Numerical analyses were also conducted in order to find the heat transfer coefficient for the range of Nusselt number which was difficult to get the data from experiments. The correlation equation between Nusselt number and Rayleigh number were suggested using both the experimental and numerical data.

In a high-level waste (HLW) repository, heat is generated by the radioactive decay of the waste. This can affect the safety of the repository because the surrounding environment can be changed by the heat transfer through the rock. Thus, it is important to determine the heat transfer coefficient of the atmosphere in the underground repository. In this study, the heat transfer coefficient was estimated by measuring the indoor environmental factors in the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute Underground Research Tunnel (KURT) under forced convection. For the experiment, a heater of 5 kw capacity, 2 meters long, was inserted through the tunnel wall in the heating section of KURT in order to heat up the inside of the rock to $90^{\circ}C$, and fresh air was provided by an air supply fan connected to the outside of the tunnel. The results showed that the average air velocity in the heating section after the provision of the air from outside of the tunnel was 0.81 m/s with the Reynolds number of 310,000~340,000. The seasonal heat transfer coefficient in the heating section under forced convection was $7.68\;W/m^2{\cdot}K$ in the summer and $7.24\;W/m^2{\cdot}K$ in the winter.

Two-phase flow boiling experiments were conducted using FC-72 as the working fluid. The micro-channels consisted of 15 channels with a depth of 0.2 mm, width of 0.45 mm, and length of 60 mm. Tests were performed over a mass flux range of $200-400kg/m^2s$, heat flux range of $5.6-49.0kW/m^2$, and vapor quality range of 0.02-0.93. Based on the results of the experiment, the heat transfer mechanism by nucleate boiling was dominant at a lower vapor quality (x<0.2), whereas that in the region of a vapor quality greater than 0.2 was complexly influenced by nucleate boiling and forced convection boiling. The nucleate boiling and forced convection boiling could be expressed as functions of the boiling number and convection number, respectively. In addition, the heat transfer coefficient obtained by the experiment was compared with the heat transfer coefficient by the existing correlation.
