  • A series of shaking table model tests were performed to verify the validity of similitude law, which is suggested by lai (1989) to simulate the dynamic behavior of soil-fluid-structure system for is shaking table tests. In the tests, the similitude law suggested by lai was applied to determine the length and the time scaling factors. Also, the steady state concept was used in determining the density of model backfill soil, which is a key factor in simulating the development of excess pore pressure during shaking. The similitude law was verified by checking whether three different sizes of quay walls show the identical behavior or not. The similar responses of acceleration, excess pore pressure and horizontal displacement of walls were obtained far the small and large models. However, the medium model showed larger responses than those of the small and large models because of the resonance between the frequency of input acceleration and the natural frequency of the wall system. In addition, the vertical displacement and rotational angle of the walls became larger with the increase of model size.

  • In this study, a distributed rainfall-runoff model is developed using a multi-directional flow allocation algorithm and the real-time runoff updating algorithm. The developed model consists of relatively simple governing equations of hydrologic processes in order to apply developed algorithms and to enhance the efficiency of computational time which is drawback of distributed model application. The variability of topographic characteristics and flow direction according to various spatial resolution were analyzed using DEM(Digital Elevation Model) data. As a preliminary process using fine resolution DEM data, a multi-directional flow allocation algorithm was developed to maintain detail flow information in distributed rainfall-runoff simulation which has strong advantage in computation efficiency and accuracy. Also, a real-time updating algorithm was developed to update current watershed condition. The developed model is able to hold the information of actual behavior of runoff process in low resolution simulation. Therefore it is expected the improvement of forecasting accuracy and computational efficiency.

  • The applicability of the developed distributed rainfall runoff model using a multi-directional flow allocation algorithm and a real-time updating algorithm was evaluated. The rainfall runoff processes were simulated for the events of the Andong dam basin and the Namgang dam basin using raingauge network data and weather radar rainfall data, respectively. Model parameters of the basins were estimated using previous storm event then those parameters were applied to a current storm event. The physical propriety of the multi-directional flow allocation algorithm for flow routing was validated by presenting the result of flow grouping for the Andong dam basin. Results demonstrated that the developed model has efficiency of simulation time with maintaining accuracy by applying the multi-directional flow allocation algorithm and it can obtain more accurate results by applying the real-time updating algorithm. In this study, we demonstrated the applicability of a distributed rainfall runoff model for the advanced basin-wide flood management.

  • The objectives of this study are to analyze flow characteristics for a side weir, which is an inlet structure for flow discharge reduction in the main channel through 3 dimensional numerical analysis and to understand the efficiency of the overflow effect at the side weir. In this study over 40 simulations using FLOW-3D, a computational fluid dynamics program were conducted, and the results were analyzed to find the influence of the flow hydraulics, geometry, channel and weir shapes on the coefficient. It is especially considered the relatively high stage in downstream that may cause flow within channel to be backed up along the channel. Additionally by setting up the scale of simulations much larger than the existing test equipment designed by other researchers, it is intended to analyze more accurate hydraulic behavior along with the realistic hydraulic features such as structures and volumes of flow. The results show that for design with subcritical flow only if the Froude number of upstream is sustained below 0.5 and the length of weir is 33-100% of the width of channel, it is expected to improve the efficiency of the overflow over a side weir.

  • The coastal environment is affected by Cu and Zn contamination through diverse routes, including antifouling agents, industrial wastewater, and domestic activities. In this study, Crassostrea gigas and Littorina brevicula were used to examine the distributions of Cu and Zn, which are related to the increase in the use of new antifouling agents that have been used for ships since the TBT ban in 2003. The average Cu and Zn concentrations in the samples were 231.8 ${\mu}g/g$ and 492.6 ${\mu}g/g$, respectively. Both the Cu and Zn concentrations were highest in the shipyard samples, followed by the harbor sample for Cu and the industrial area sample for Zn. The results indicated that the Cu concentration was affected by the antifouling agents, and the Zn concentration was affected by both the antifouling agents and industrial wastewater. The areas that need intensive control to address the Cu and Zn contamination in major Korean coasts were identified.

  • For decades, solitary waves have commonly been used to simulate tsunami conditions in numerical studies. However, the main component of a tsunami waveform acts at completely different spatial and temporal distributions than a solitary waveform. Thus, this study applied a 2-D numerical wave tank that included a non-reflected tsunami generation system based on Navier-Stokes equations (LES-WASS-2D) to directly simulate the run-up of a tsunami-like solitary wave on a slope. First, the waveform and velocity due to the virtual depth factor were applied to the numerical wave tank to generate a tsunami, which made it possible to generate the wide waveform of a tsunami, which was not reproduced with the existing solitary wave approximation theory. Then, to validate the applied numerical model, the validity and effectiveness of the numerical wave tank were verified by comparing the results with the results of a laboratory experiment on a tsunami run-up on a smooth impermeable 1:19.85 slope. Using the numerical results, the run-up characteristics due to a tsunami-like solitary wave on an impermeable slope were also discussed in relation to the volume ratio. The maximum run-up heights increased with the ratio of the tsunami waveform. Therefore, the tsunami run-up is highly likely to be underestimated compared to a real tsunami if the solitary wave of the approximation theory is applied in a tsunami simulation in a coastal region.

  • This study aims to investigate the relationship between the mean diameter of bed material and the tractive force due to flow in domestic natural rivers. To investigate the size of bed material, sampling in the field and estimation of mean diameter have been conducted. The relationship between the mean diameters and tractive force is figured out by calculating tractive force and frictional velocity. The field works have been carried out at 94 location of 18 rivers including 4 large watersheds. In order to determine the quantities of discharge used to calculate the tractive force, the various values of frequency have been estimated and tested. As a result, it is found that the 1.01 year frequency discharge is most appropriate for the bankfull discharge. From results, the relatioship between the mean diameter of bed material the tractive force is presented in this study.

  • Due to the global warming and air pollution, interest in renewable energies has increased in recent years. In particular, the crisis of the depletion of fossil energy resources in the near future has accelerated the renewable energy technologies. Among the renewable energy resources, oceans covering almost three-fourths of earth's surface have an enormous amount of energy. For this reason, various approaches have been made to harness the tremendous energy potential. In order to achieve two purposes: to improve harbor water quality and to use wave energy, this study proposed a sea water exchange structure applying an Oscillating Water Column (OWC) wave generation system that utilizes the air flow velocity induced by the vertical motion of water column in the air chamber as a driving force of turbine. In particular, the airflow velocity in the air chamber was estimated from the time variations of water surface profile computed by using 3D-NIT model based on the 3-dimensional irregular numerical wave tank. The relationship of the frequency spectrums between the computed airflow velocities and the incident waves was analyzed. This study also discussed the characteristics of frequency spectrums in the air chamber according to the presence of the structure, wave deformations by the structure, and the power of the water and air flows were also investigated. It is found that the phase difference exists in the time series data of water level fluctuations and air flow in the air chamber and the air flow power is superior to the fluid flow power.

  • Although the rubble mound breakwaters in Korea have been damaged by typhoons almost every year, quantification of erosion of armor block have seldomly been made. In this paper, the damage of armor units is standardized by the relative damage. In the case where the number of damaged units is reported, it is divided by the total number of units to calculate the relative damage. In the case where the rehabilitation cost is reported, the relative damage is calculated by using its relationship with the present value of the past rehabilitation cost. The relative damage is shown to have strong correlations with the typhoon parameters such as nearest central air pressure and maximum wind speed at each site. On the other hand, the existing numerical methods for calculating the cumulative damage are compared with hydraulic model tests. The method of Melby and Kobayashi (1998) is shown to give a reasonable result, and it is used to calculate the relative damage, which is compared with the measured damage. A good agreement is shown for the East Breakwater of Yeosu Harbor, while poor agreement is shown for other breakwaters. The poor agreement may be because waves of larger height than the design height occurred due to strong typhoons associated with climate change so that the relative damage increased during the last several decades.

  • A series of sheps-of-opportunity sea sryface temperature (SST) measurement beween Jeju and Wando during a period from December 1979 through June 1981 produced following results. 1. A sihnificantly warm water appeared south of Chuja Island and Cheongsan Island during Island. It is suggested that this water represents a current entering the Jeju Strait from the west. Direction of this currint in other seasons is not certain. 2. Coastal waters were found north of the Cheongsan Island and Bogil Islhnd throughout the measurement period. In February these waters sometimes reached as far as Chuja Island to south. 3. Frequently thermal fronts were observed near the Chuja Island and the Cheongsan Island. 4. In summer cold waters appeared north of the Chuja Island and Changsu Island. Intrusion of cold bottom water from offshore and its subsequent vertical mixing due to strong tidal current are probably reponsible for this appearance. 5. Cold waters also appeared locally around islands and in ghe Jeju Harbor in spring and summer. 6. North-south SST difference reached 8-9$^{\circ}C$ in winter which is the annual maximum. 7. Annual range of SST varies from 12-14$^{\circ}C$ in the central part of the Jeju Strait to 16-20$^{\circ}C$ in coastal waters to north. The highest SST appeared everywhere in September but the lowest one did not appesr in the same month of year.
