  • This paper presents results of biaxial compressive tests and strength criterion on two replacement percentages of recycled coarse aggregate (RPRCA) by mass for plain structural recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) at all kinds of stress ratios. The failure mode characteristic of specimens and the direction of the cracks were observed and described. The two principally static strengths in the corresponding stress state were measured. The influence of the stress ratios on the biaxial strengths of RAC was also analyzed. The experimental results showed that the ratios of the biaxial compressive strength ${\sigma}_{3f}$ to the corresponding uniaxial compressive strength $f_c$ for the two RAC are higher than that of the conventional concrete (CC), and dependent on the replacement percentages of recycled coarse aggregate, stress states and stress ratios; however, the differences of tensile-compressive ratios for the two RAC and CC are smaller. On this basis, a new failure criterion with the stress ratios is proposed for plain RAC under biaxial compressive stress states. It provides the experimental and theoretical foundations for strength analysis of RAC structures subject to complex loads.

  • This study is purposed to improve the performance of concrete made of recycled coarse aggregate. For this, recycled aggregate concrete was produced with SBR latex, and fluidity, dynamic performance and drying shrinkage were examined. According to the result, with mixing 6% of SBR latex, fluidity having resistance against segregation can be insured and compressive and flexural strength was increased. Especially the increment in terms of flexures was remarkable. In addition to, with above mixing ratio, drying shrinkage was reduced. Therefore there is a strong inference that superior recycled aggregate concrete can be produced with using 6% of SBR latex.

  • In this paper, the effects of elevated temperatures on the strength and compressive stress-strain curve (SSC) of recycled coarse aggregate concrete with different replacement percentages are presented. 90 recycled coarse aggregate concrete prisms are heated up to 20, 200, 400, 600, $800^{\circ}C$. The results show that the compressive strength, split tensile strength, elastic modulus of recycled aggregate concrete specimens decline significantly as the temperature rise. While the peak strain increase of recycled aggregate concrete specimens as the temperature rise. Compared to the experimental curves, the proposed stress-strain relations for recycled aggregate concrete after exposure elevated temperatures can be used in practical engineering applications.

  • Due to the demolition of old structures, primarily buildings, an amount of discharged construction wastes are increased. From the construction wastes, recycled aggregate can be used as a useful resource for concrete. However, its application to structural member is very limited. In this experimental study, the compressive strength of spun-concrete using recycled aggregate was investigated. Coarse aggregate was replaced with $100\%$ of the recycled coarse aggregate, and recycled fine aggregate was replaced with various amount. According to the test results, the specimen of spun-concrete showed uniform compressive strength regardless the amount of replaced recycled fine aggregate.

  • Bottom ash, which is discharged through a wet process in a thermal power plant, contains much unburned coal due to quenching and much salt due to seawater. However, dry bottom ash discharged through a dry process contains low unburned coal and salt, and has light -weight due to many pores. Therefore, it is expected that it can be used as lightweight aggregate. This study deals with the basic properties of concrete used dry bottom ash as coarse aggregate. As a results, the concrete having high content of dry bottom ash aggregate showed high slump by using water reducing agent and its air content was within 5±1.5% as designed value, similarly to normal weight concrete. It also showed a lower compressive strength than 100% of crushed stone.

  • In recent times, the lack of good quality natural aggregate has led to the alternative use of recycled aggregate. However, the adhered mortars in recycled aggregate lower the performance of the concrete, such as by reducing its strength and causing deterioration and cracking. In this study, the effects of nylon fiber (NF) on the mechanical and durable performance of recycled coarse aggregate concrete (RAC) were experimentally examined. Concrete specimens with natural coarse aggregate (NA) or RA were produced by adding 0, 0.6 and $1.2kg/m^3$ of NF. Various mechanical properties and the durability of the RAC were measured and compared with those of the NAC. In addition, in order to observe the hydrates and ITZ, SEM observations were made of the 28-day concrete samples. From the test results, as expected, it was found that the RAC exhibited lower performance than the NAC. However, the addition of NF to the concrete was effective in significantly enhancing the performance of the RAC due to the bridge effect of the NF.

  • In this study, a mix design for self compacting concrete was based on Okamura's method and concrete incorporated just a ground granulated blast furnace slag. Replacement ratio of slag is in the range of $20-80\%$ of cement matrix by volume. For the optimal self compactability in mixture incorporating ground granulated blast furnace slag, the paste and mortar tests were first completed. Then the slump flow, elapsed time of 500mm slump flow, V funnel time and filling height by U type box were conducted in concrete. The volume of coarse aggregate in self compacting concrete was in the range of $50-60\%$ to the solid volume percentage of coarse aggregate. Finally, the compressive and splitting tensile strengths were determined in the hardened self compacting concrete incorporating ground granulated blast furnace slag. From the test results, it is desirable for self compacting concrete that the replacement of ground granulated blast furnace slag is in the range of $40-60\%$ of cement matrix by volume and the volume of coarse aggregate to the solid volume percentage of coarse aggregate with a limit of $55\%$.

  • The quality of high performance concrete largely depends on water cement ratio, porosity, material composition and mix methods. The uniformity of color, texture and compressive strengths are quality indicators commonly used to assess the overall characteristics of concrete mixes. The homogeneity and share of coarse aggregates play a key role in concrete quality and must be analyzed in a microscopic point of view. This research studies the quality of high performance concrete by taking drilled cores in both horizontal and vertical directions from a 1.0 $m^3$ specimen. The coarse aggregate, expressed in digitized $100{\times}116$ dpi resolution images are processed based on brightness in colors through commercial software converted into text files. With the image converting to text format, the share of coarse aggregate is quantified leading to a satisfactory assessment of homogeneity - a quality index of high performance concrete. The compressive strengths of concrete and the shares of coarse aggregate of the samples are also compared in this research study to illustrate its correlation in concrete quality. It is concluded that a higher homogeneity of aggregate exists in the vertical plane than that of the horizontal planes of the high performance concrete. In addition, the concrete specimen showing denser particle packing has relatively higher compressive strengths. The research methodology provides an easy-to-use, direct measurement of high performance concrete when conducting quality assessment in the construction site.

  • In this study, freezing-thawing resistance of concrete using steel slag as coarse aggregate(steel slag concrete) from Gwangyang Iron Co. was estimated to offer basic data for utilization of much more steel slag. Freezing-thawing test of concrete using crushed stone as coarse aggregate(crushed stone concrete) whose compressive strength and air contents are as close as possible to those of the steel slag concrete was performed. Because they are main two factors that affect of freezing-thawing resistance. The test was carried out up to 400 cycles according to KS F 2456. The compressive strength and weight of two concretes were measured and compared. As a result, the freezing-thawing resistance of steel slag concrete curing in water was almost the same with that of crushed stone concrete. But the resistance of steel slag concrete curing in air dry condition was weaker than that of crushed stone concrete. Also, the steel slag concrete which has more than 60% of W/C ratio showed much more surface degradation when compared to crushed stone concrete.
