In this paper, we reported the current technologies of water scaling removal and also water recovery from the flue gases, which are funded by Department of Energy (DOE), USA. Globally, water resources are limited due to the climate change. The potential impacts of climate change is food and water shortages. In the $21^{st}$ century, water shortages and pollution are expected to become more acute as populations grow and concentrate in cities. At present, the water stress increases over 62.0 ~ 75.8% of total water basin area and decreases over 19.7 ~ 29.0%. Many renewable energy sources demand secure water resources. Water is critical for successful climate change mitigation, as many efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions depend on reliable access to water resources. Water hardness is one of the major challenge to coal power plants. Department of energy (DOE) funded and encouraged for the development of advanced technologies for the removal of hardness of water (scaling) and also water recovery from the flue gases from coal power plants.
This study calculates carbon dioxide emissions using the fuel analysis and the continuous measurement from 500 MW-class coal-fired power plants and evaluates the characteristics of each method. The emissions calculation using fuel analysis was the lowest calculation among the emissions calculation methods. This is because of low net calorific value analysis. When using the low calorific coals, it is beneficial to utilize the fuel analysis. Also it showed the characteristics of the lower calculation emissions when used the as fired coals than the as received coals. However, the difference is negligible to less than 2%. As sample analysis personnel and equipment are limited in the present circumstances, it is also deemed appropriate to use the as received coals to fuel analysis. Continuous measurement showed somewhat higher emissions than the fuel analysis, and lower emissions than calculation method using domestic emission factors. Thus, if the calculated emission using fuel analysis increases with the coal type changes, it is beneficial to using modified flow rate measurement method.
Combustion reactivity and thermal behavior of two imported coals used as a pulverized fuel of commercially thermal power plant were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and large scale test furnace of 200 kg/hr. TGA results showed that combustion efficiency of high moisture coal has lower than reference coal due to the slow combustion completion rate although it has the low ignition temperature, and activation energies of high moisture coal with 79 kJ/mol for overall combustion was higher than reference coal of 53 kJ/mol. Test furnace results ascertained that flame of black band of high moisture coal during the combustion in boiler broke out compared to reference coal and then it becomes to unburned carbon due to the less reactivity and combustion rate. But, Blending combustion of high moisture coal with design coal of high sulfur are available because sulfur content of high moisture coal was too low to generate the low SOx content in flue gas from boiler during the combustion. The ash analysis results show that it was not expected to be associated with slagging and fouling in pulverized coal fired systems due to the low alkali metal content of $Na_2O$ and $K_2O$ compared to bituminous coal.

Recycling of coal combustion by-product(Ash) are becoming more important in the utilization business as a result of the increased use of NOx reduction technologies at coal-fired power plants. current disposal methods of these by-products create not only a loss of profit for the power industry, but also environmental concerns that breed negative public opinion. Since inherent characteristics make these by-product suitable for building materials, several types of artificial aggregates and construction bricks are manufactured and tested to verify the engineering properties.
During the start-up of 500 MW class coal-fired power plant, abnormal shaft vibration was occurred on bearings installed on both side of high and intermediate pressure steam turbine. Shaft vibration was analyzed to investigate the reason and find the resolution, based on well-known theory in this study. Typical vibration characteristics which occur when rotating parts contact with stationary parts were observed at the analysis of frequency, amplitude and phase angle. The reason of abnormal vibration was assumed to be rub and internal parts wear was observed during repair period. As a result of applying low speed turning and balancing for resolution of abnormal vibration, balancing was more effective for rub removal. So balancing could be excellent resolution in the case of abnormal vibration which is similar to this study.

Coal-fired power plants supply roughly 50 percent of the nation's electricity but produce a disproportionate share of electric utility-related air pollution. Coal combustion technology can facilitate volume reduction of up to 90%, with the inorganic contaminants being captured in furnace bottom ash and fly ash residues. These disposal coal ash residues are however governed by the potential release of constituent contaminants into the environment. Accelerated carbonation process has been shown to have a potential for improving the chemical stability and leaching behavior of bottom ash residues. The aim of this work was to quantify the volume of $CO_2$ that could be sequestrated with a view to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and stabilize the contaminated heavy metals from bottom ash samples. In this study, we used PC boiler bottom ash, Kanvera reactor (KR) slag and calcined waste lime for measuring chemical analysis and heavy metals leaching tests were performed and also the formation of calcite resulting from accelerated carbonation process was investigated by thermo gravimetric and differential thermal analysis (TG/DTA).

We performed numerical simulation using a DPM (discrete phase model) to identify the optimal operation ranges in two representative PM burners widely used in domestic 500-MW pulverized coal-fired power plants. Recently there has been an increased utilization of low-cost coals such as sub-bituminous coal. We investigate the effects of coal blends on the distribution ratio of coal to air by varying the mass flow rates of pulverized coal and primary air and the particle size. We present and discuss optimal conditions for the distribution ratio of coal to air in PM burners.
Utilization of fly ash by-produced from coal fired power plants and classified as general waste became very important problem to solve in the environmental protection and recycling of waste materials. The possibility of large scale substitution of fly ash as a raw material for bricks and wet tiles was highly expected because the chemical compositions of fly ash were mostly Al2O3 and SiO2 and the properties of it were very similar with clay. Accordingly in order to investigate the substitutional limit these specimens were substituted from 0 to 100 wt% fly ash by 20wt% increment for clay. Fly ash-clay bodies were fired at 1200, 1250 and 130$0^{\circ}C$ and then their properties were measured, It was found that these specimens sintered at 125$0^{\circ}C$ had a good bending strength. Especially when these sintered bodies were added to 20, 40 and 60 wt% fly ash the bending strength of those were 201 , 205 and 191kg.cm2 respectively with the water absorption below 1%, This showed that fly ash could be substituted ab 60 wt% in this experiment.

This study discusses the present status of mercury emission and distribution from major anthropogenic sources in Korea and the future trend of mercury emission by activity changes and application of BATs. Atmospheric mercury emission from major anthropogenic sources based on Annex D of Minamata convention was estimated to around 4.89 tonne in 2012. Emission ratios of cement clinker production, coal-fired power plant, waste incineration and non-ferrous metal smelting were 68.68%, 24.75%, 6.29% and 0.28%, respectively. High mercury emission regions were characterized by the presence of cement clinker production facilities and coal-fired power plants. Prediction of future activities was carried out by linear regression of the previous year data. The (total) mercury emission was estimated to decrease up to 48% Under the scenario of BATs to be applied and the change of future activities. Emissions from coal-fired powerplants and cement clinkers were expected to decrease significantly.
The reduction of carbon dioxide emissions becomes a global issue, the main source of carbon dioxide emissions in the Asian region is the energy conversion sector, especially coal-fired power plants. We are working to develop technologies that will at least limit the increase in carbon dioxide emissions from the thermal power plants as one way to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Our research aims to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by removing iron oxide scale from the feedwater system of thermal power plants using a superconducting high-gradient magnetic separation (HGMS) system, thereby reducing the loss of power generation efficiency. In this paper, the background of thermal power plants in Asia is outlined, followed by a case study of the introduction of a chemical cleaning line at an actual thermal power plant in Japan, and the possibility of introducing it into the thermal power plants in China based on the results.
