Various approaches have been proposed to predict the ash deposition (slagging and fouling) propensity of coal, which is essential in maintaining high efficiency and preventing corrosion/damage of a coal-fired boiler. The common method is to establish an index of the ash deposition propensity based on elementary coal composition and advanced characterization of ash properties, which is readily applicable to design, operation and maintenance of coal-fired boilers. Although many indexes have been developed for this purpose, their validity is still not satisfactory in actual applications to particular coal types or operating conditions. This paper reviews the status of predictive approaches for the ash deposition propensity, and assesses the performance of existing indexes by comparing the results for selected coals. This work will contribute to the development of a comprehensive and practical method for prediction of the ash deposition propensity.

The development of a low cost catalyst with high performance and small amount of carbon deposition on catalyst from toluene steam reforming were investigated by using coal ash as a support material. Ni-loaded coal ash catalyst showed similar catalytic activity for toluene steam reforming compared with the Ni/Al2O3. At 800 ℃, the toluene conversion was 77% for Ni/TAL, 68% for Ni/KPU and 78% for Ni/Al2O3. Ni/TAL showed similar toluene conversion to Ni/Al2O3. However, Ni/KPU produced higher hydrogen yield at relatively lower toluene conversion. Ni/KPU catalyst showed a remarkable ability of suppressing the carbon deposition. The difference in coke deposition and hydrogen yield is due to the composition of KPU ash (Ca and Fe) which increase coke resistance and water gas shift reaction. This study suggests that coal ash catalysts have great potential for the application in the steam reforming of biomass tar.
At the end of 1997 about 3 million tons of coal ash was produced as byproducts from the coal fired electrical power plants in Korea. Only about 27% of that byproducts was utilized as the admixtures of cement and concrete industry. But the large quantity of coal fired fly-ash has been used as the soil improvement materials in other countries. So the aim of this study is the estimation of the applicability of the coal fired fly-ash as microfine grouting materials by admixing the superfine particles which were separated from the coal fired fly-ash for the higher values. The 6 types of specimens were manufactured in the laboratory for the purpose of estimating the chemical and physical properties of cement and grouts. These specimens consisted of 2 specific surfaces of 6, 000 and 8, 000$cm^2$/g in Elaine method. And these specimens are devide into 3 ratios (30%, 50%, 70%) of fly-ash by weight. From the estimated properties of the coal fired fly-ash microflne cements and grouts, 50% fly-ash is the most suitable ratio for grouting materials. However, further study of durability is necessary for using fly-ash grouts practically at the field projects. The higher content of the unburned carbon of fly-ash increases the thinner layer of carbon on the surface of solution of grouts, and requires more quantity of surface active agent. As a results of this study, it is found that the microfine fly-ash is very useful as a good grouting material if 50% of fly-ash is added with the microfine portland cement. So, in the near future, if the coal fired fly-ash is able to be used as grouting material in Korea, the demand of fly-ash will increase rapidly.
Approximately 8.5 million tons of fly ash and 740,000 tons of briquette ash were produced in 2010. Inefficient recycling of coal ash has been a heavy economic and environmental burden and economical coal ash utilization technologies are required to turn coal ash into valuable resources. In this study the patents and literature were analyzed to understand the present situation of coal ash recycling technologies and to promote utilization of coal ash for producing a non-sintering green cement, geopolymer. The survey was based on the open patents of USA, European Union, Japan and Korea, and the papers in SCI - indexed journals published between 1979 and 2013. Technical key words were used for data collection and noise filtering. Trends of recycling technologies in utilization of coal ash for producing geopolymers were discussed in terms of time periods, countries, companies and various forms of technologies.

BACKGROUND: Coal ashes generated from thermal power plants have been known as beneficial materials for agricultural use because of their nutrient elements. However, there is limitation to recycle them due to their alkalinity. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness or safety of the coal ashes for their heavy metals on agricultural recycling when adjusted to pH of 5 with sulfuric acid. METHODS AND RESULTS: Concentration of hydrogen which is needed to adjust pH of coal ash was estimated by using a buffering curve and then the amount of sulfuric acid was changed by the estimation before incubation. Each of fly ash (FA) and bottom ash (BA) was collected from both thermal plants of Yeongdong (YD) and Yeongheung (YH). The pH values of coal ashes increased to 4.76 (from 4.34) after incubation with sulfuric acid for 56 days, closer to the targeted pH. Coal ashes also increased the contents of available phosphorus by 2-fold (165 mg/kg) and 11-fold (1,137 mg/kg) for YDBA and YDFA, respectively, compared to the control. CONCLUSION: The utilization of coal ash with its acidity regulation would be very beneficial to agriculture sector and further suggest promising environmental safety against heavy metals.
Pot experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of fly ash on growth responses and on accumulation of the heavy metals in soil. Two kinds of fly ash, anthracite and bituminous coal, were treated with different levels of 0, 0.4, 0.8, and 1.2 kg/pot(20L). Tobacco growth was better by application of fly ash than that by the control. However, the early stage of growth by application of bituminous coal, 1.2 kg/pot, was decreased due to the boron toxicity occurred by fly ash. Generally, tobacco yield was significantly increased with applying fly ash, showing the highest yield at 1.2 kg/pot for anthracite and at 0.8 kg/pot for bituminous coal. The content of total nitrogen in leaves was higher with fly ash than that of the control, while the content of calcium in leaves was low, Contents of heavy metal and the other minerals were not significantly different between the control and the treatment of fly ash. Soil pH after experiment was linearly increased with application level of fly ash, indicating that the application of bituminous coal was more effective than that of anthracite. Contents of available phosphate, exchangeable $Ca^{2+}$+ and $Mg^{2+}$ in soil were increased by application of fly ash, especially with bituminous coal. Contents of Cu, Cr, and Ni were increased with application level of bituminous coati even if the contents were still lower than critical levels for farming land. The other heavy metals were similar between the control and the application of fly ash.
In order to offer a better understanding of air pollution of China as well as East Asia we attempted to characterize the chemical properties of the raw coal materials mined in China and their combusted bottom ashes generated from coal fired power plant. To this end, we measured the chemical characteristics of individual bottom ashes and feed coal fragments collected at a coal fired power generator which was operated with the raw coal dug at a coal mine in China. The chemical properties of these two sample types were determined by a synchrotron radiation X-ray fluorescence (SR-XRF) microprobe method. Through an application of such technique, it was possible to draw the 2D elemental maps in and/or on raw coal fragments and fired bottom ashes. The pulverized fine pieces of feed coal mainly consisted of mineral components such as Fe, Ca, Ti, Ca, and Si, while Fe was detected as overwhelming majority. The elemental mass of combusted bottom ash shows strong enrichment of many elements that exist naturally in coal. There were significant variations in chemical properties of ash-to-ash and fragment-to-fragment. Although we were not able to clearly distinguish As and Pb peaks because of the folding in their X-ray energies, these two elements can be used as tracers of coal fire origin.
The objectives of this study are to investigate the suitability of various coal fly ashes and incineration ashes for zeolite synthesis. Zeolite P and hydroxysodalite are produced from coal fly ash and paper sludge incineration ash. When soluble and acid-soluble materials in incineration fly ash are removed by the water washing or acid washing before hydrothermal synthesis, hydroxysodalite can be produced. The factors to make solid-liquid separation difficult are the calcium component and the unburned carbon in ash.

Coal-fired power plants supply roughly 50 percent of the nation's electricity but produce a disproportionate share of electric utility-related air pollution. Coal combustion technology can facilitate volume reduction of up to 90%, with the inorganic contaminants being captured in furnace bottom ash and fly ash residues. These disposal coal ash residues are however governed by the potential release of constituent contaminants into the environment. Accelerated carbonation process has been shown to have a potential for improving the chemical stability and leaching behavior of bottom ash residues. The aim of this work was to quantify the volume of $CO_2$ that could be sequestrated with a view to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and stabilize the contaminated heavy metals from bottom ash samples. In this study, we used PC boiler bottom ash, Kanvera reactor (KR) slag and calcined waste lime for measuring chemical analysis and heavy metals leaching tests were performed and also the formation of calcite resulting from accelerated carbonation process was investigated by thermo gravimetric and differential thermal analysis (TG/DTA).

The content distributions of some rare metals and rare earthe metals in coal ash (fly ash, bottom ash and pond ash) and leachate from coal-fired power plants were investigated. In case of Yttrium (Y) and Neodymium (Nd) which were strategic critical elements, their contents were ranged from about 23 ~ 75 mg/kg and it is shown they are worth to be developed for the recovery and separation method. Considering the annual amount of fly ash and bottom ash and pond ash, coal-fired power plants have great value of about 1,670 billion KRW and it is regards they are worthy as urban mines.
