  • This pot experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of systematic variation application of Fe, Mn, Cu, and Zn on forage performance of orchardgrass and white clover. The treatments of systematic variation were 0/100, 25/75, 50/50. 75/25, and $100/0\%$ in the Fe/Cu(trial-1). Mn/Zn(trial-2), and Fe+Cu/Mn+Zn(trial-3), respectively The treatments of Fe/Mn/Cu/Zn(trial-4) were composed of $70\%$ for main element and $10\%$ for other 3 elements, respectively. 1. The contents of N-compounds in forages tended to be in inverse proportion to the yields. In the Mn/Zn trial, the 0/l00 to white clover resulted in the relatively high contents of soluble N-compounds and low ratio of pure protein/soluble N-compounds in company with a severe yield decrease. 2. In the Fe+Cu/Mn+Zn trial, the 0/100 and 100/0 resulted in the somewhat high contents of N-compounds in white clover. It was likely to be caused by the concentration effect derived from yield decrease. In addition, the 100/0 resulted in the relatively high content of soluble N-compounds and low ratio of pure protein/soluble N-compounds. The protein synthesis in white clover was likely to be negatively influenced by the 100/0. 3. In the Fe/Mn/Cu/Zn trial, white clover showed the low contents of crude and pure protein at the 1st cut. It was likely to be caused by the unbalanced mutual ratios derived from the high application levels of each single element. 4. In white clover at the 5th cut, the 0/100 of Mn/Zn and 100/0 of Fe+Cu/Mn+Zn resulted in the relatively high content of K. It was likely to be caused by the concentration effect derived from yield decrease.

  • Effects of nitrogen incorporated with 15N-nitrogen, which was applied to grown alone and in mixture with grass and legumes of forage crops, on the yield of dry matter, total nitrogen content, percentage of nitrogen derived from fertilizer (P.N.D.F.), A-value were studied, and the results obtained are as follows: 1. With nitrogen for the yield of dry matter was highly effective only to orchardgrass and were also effect to the early stages of alfalfa and birdsfoot trefoil in case of a mixed sowing. 2. Alone and mixed sowings showed the yield of dry matter in decreasing order of alfalfa<red clover>orchardgrass>birdsfoot trefoil, and orchardgrass + alfalfa>orchardgrass + red clover>orchardgrass + birdsfoot trefoil, respectively. 3. In case of grown alone, orchardgrass gave higher percentage of nitrogen derived from fertilizer (P.N.D.F.) than legume, whereas in case of grown in mixture it was in reverse order throughout the plots. It appears likely that orchardgrass was rather supplied soil nitrogen by legume then by nitrogen application. And P.N.D.F. was getting smaller in the latter stage of all forage crops in case of grown alone. In case of grown in mixture, however, and inconsistent P.N.D.F. was obtained from orchardgrass. 4. The A-value in case of grown alone was decreased in order of alfalfa>red clover>orchardgrass>birdsfoot trefoil. In contrast, however, the A-value in case of grown in mixture wes decreased in order of orchardgasss+alfalfa (3:7)>orchardgrass+red clover (3:7)>orchardgrass+red clover (3:7)>orchardgrass+alfalfa(5:5)>orchardgrass+birdsfoot trefoil (5:5)>orchardgrass+red clover (5:5)>orchardgrass+birdsfoot trefoil (3:7).

  • The competitive relationship between orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata L.) and ladino clover (Trifolium repens L.) was studied under aerial and soil partitions and N, P fertilizer combinations. Orchardgrass and ladino clover were grown in field with one of non competition, shoot competition only, root competition only, full competition and competition between same species. Under basal application of K fertilizer N and P were applied in treatment combinations of blank, N only (l5kg/10a), P only (l5kg/10a), and both NP at planting and each cutting. The forage yield in mixture was between yield of pure orchard grass stand and the 'expected yield', which was a mean of both pure stands. The forage yield in pure ladino was the lowest. During the experiment there was a progressive decline in clover yield either pure stand or mixture. Since orchardgrass was 'over-compensated' to low-yielding clover, the yield of mixture was more than non competition. Orchard grass was more competitive than ladino clover as seasons advanced. The aggressivity of orchardgrass was higher in root competition than in shoot competition comparing to clover. Nitrogen fertilizer increased orchardgrass yield, while phosphate did ladino clover yield and root weight of both species. But the additional effect of P to N was not significant in dry weight and LAI.

  • Forty-five holstein calves (average liveweight 150kg) were used to investigate the effect of combination of tall fescue and white clover cultivars on liveweight gain and feed efficiency into animal product in pastures. Daily gains per head for 3 years in T1, T2 and T3 (TI : Fawn, tall fescue + Regal, white clover + orchardgrass + perennial ryegrass, T2 : Roa, tall fescue + Regal, white clover + orchardgrass + perennial ryegrass, T3 : Roa, tall fescue + Tahora, white clover + orchardgrass + perennial ryegrass) were 0.27, 0.37 and 0.35kg, respectively, while average daily weight gains per ha were 3.54, 4.47 and 4.43kg, respectively. Animals grazing on mixed pasture with Roa tall fescue and Regal or Tahora white clover were showed a higher liveweight gain than those grazed on pastures with Fawn tall fescue and Regal h i t e clover. There was no significant difference among treatments (TI = 5.0kg T2 = 4.8kg T3 = 4.9kg) in herbage intake but feed efficiency into animal product was showed higher in T2 and T3 in comparison with T1(7.9% in T2 and 8.0% in T3 vs 5.97% in TI). In conclusion, association with Roa tall fescue and Regal white clover in mixed pasture can obtain higher animal product under continuous grazing system than that with Fawn tall fescue and Regal white clover.

  • The esterase isozyme of several legume plants were separated and visualized by horizontal starch gel electrophoresis using enzyme-specific staining. Extracts used were prepared from fully expanded young leaf and stem of six legume species which were red clover(Trifolium Pretense L.), ladino clover(Trifolium repense L.), wild white clover(Trifolium repense L.), alfalfa(Medicage sativa L.), mimosoides(Cassia mimosoides var nomame Makino), and amoena(Vicia amoena Fisch). The number of band, Phenotype and staining intensity of esterase isozyme in leaf and stem varies depending on the plant species. However, there are little difference between leaf and stem esterase isozyme in same species except alfalfa. And in the leaf and stem of mimosoides and amoena showed not any esterase(Fig. 2). Among the examined plants, the highest staining intensity and the rapidest migrating esterase isozyme was Est 1.

  • The competition relationship between orchardgrass(Docflis glomerutu L. cv; Potomac) and red clover (Trifnlium prurense L. cv; Kenland) was investigated under the pure and mixed swards. Each species were grown in intra- and interspecific competition in pots and fields for 2-years. Intra- and interspecific competition were evaluated by calculating traditional methods; expected yield, relative yield total(RYT), aggressivity and compensation index(CI), and shoot and root dry matter production in the orchadgrass(ffi) pure, red clover(RC) pure and orchardgrdss(W)-red clover(RC) mixed sward. The results obtained were summarized as follows: Compared to OG and RC pure swards, the shoot and root dry maaer(DM) yield of OG-RC mixed sward were higher and more deeply rooted under the soil than those of OG and RC pure sward. Also, the number of tillen per plant of OG in the OG-RC mixed sward was less than that of OG pure sward, but that of RC in the OGRC mixed sward was more than that of RC pure sward. OG-RC mixed sward were evaluated as a productive sward type compared to OG and RC pure swards in that actual yield was higher than expect yield and that relative yield total(RYT), and compensation index(C1) were high. As mentioned above, compared to intraspecific competition as a OG and RC pure sward, interspecific competition as a OG-RC mixed sward was evaluated to productive type under the ffi and RC species utilization

  • 1. Dry matter intake was significantly increased above the 30% red clover plant composition (p<0.05) as compared with 100% orchardgrass plant composition. However, there was a significant positive correlation (p<0.05) between the content of CP and dry matter intake, and was a significant negative correlation (p<0.05) between the content of NDF and dry matter intake. 2. Dry matter digestibility was significantly increased with the increase of red clover plant composition as compared with 100% orchardgrass plant composition (p<0.05). Digestible dry matter intake was significantly increased above the 20% red clover plant composition (p<0.05) as compared with 100% orchardgrass plant composition. However, there was a significant positive correlation (p<0.05) between the content of CP and digestible dry matter intake, and was a significant negative correlation (p<0.01) between the content of NDF and digestible dry matter intake. 3. Preference of herbage samples tended to markedly increased with the increase of red clover plant composition.

  • The more N fertilizer, the more grass proportion (58 8, 240 kg N/ha) and the less white clover (Trifolium repens) (6 %, 240 kg N) under grazing utilization. The proportion of white clover was maintained about 27 % at 60 kg N/ha/yr and weed proportion was reached 33 %. Under the condition of differentiated N rates, the proportion of white clover was ranged from 10 to 36 % at 20 kg N/ha/cut which was allocated after every grazing and it probably dependent on differentiated N rates rather than total amounts of N applied annually. 53-74 % of total dry matter yield were concentrated at 1st and 2nd growth under grazing system and there were no great differences in dry matter yield at 3rd, 4th, and 5th growth in comparison with the variations of N rates. There was very significant relationship between the proportions of white clover and the amounts of N uptaken by herbage upto 180 kg N/ha. About 138 kg N/ha were uptaken by herbage without N fertilizer but only with white clover (31 %) as a substitute of N. In the amounts of crude fiber and crude protein by differentiation of N fertilizer, there were no any great variations and liveweightgain during grazing periods was reached 1583 kg liveweightlha.

  • The experiment were carried out to determine the rate of regrowth, the changes of carbohydrates contained in the samples right after cutting, plant part for storage of carbohydtates and top-dressing time of ladino clover and orchardgrass. Plants were grown in the simple growth chamber as well as in the fields. The temperature, light intensity and light period were controlled to be 15-20$^{\circ}$, 4,250 Lux, and 15 hours in the simple growth chamber. The results obtained are as follows ; 1. The period of recovery to initial stands after cutting was about 3 weeks in ladino clover and 4-5 weeks in orchard grass in terms of dry matter and carbohydrates. 2. The content of total water-soluble carbohydrates of plant parts was the hightest in stolon of ladino clover and in sheath of orchardgrass, and the lowest in roots of ladino clover and orchardgrass. 3. Cutting resulted in a temporary decrease of total water-soluble carbohydrates in the shoots. Similar trends were observed when the plants were left intact with top-dressing. 4. The top-dressing applied simultalliousely with the cutting was more effective to stimu1ate regrowth than that applied after cutting, however, both of the simultaneous and after cutting application were still better than application prior to cutting.

  • To improve germination and growth of forages of hill pasture seeds of several forages were osmotically primed with polyethylene glycol (PEG) under different PEG concentrations, treatment periods, and temperatures. Seeds were coated with several materials, and tested for germination. The best primed or coated seeds in germination tests were surface sow on hilly area. The results obtained are summarized as follows; 1. Osmotic priming with PEG accelerated germination of forages and reduced time taken for germination. 2. Germinability was best when the seeds of Tama ryegrass or orchardgrass were treated for 6-9 days at 30g PEG1100 ml water, red clover or white clover for 3, or 9 days in 20g PEG1100 ml water at $10^{\circ}C$. 3. Priming seeds of Tama ryegrass or orchardgrass in 30% PEG solution for 6 days, and seeds of red clover or white clover in 20% PEG solution for 6 days at $15^{\circ}C$ were most effective in germination, similar to priming at $10^{\circ}C$ . 4. Priming seeds of Tama ryegrass at 15C, and orchardgrass, red clover, or white clover at $10^{\circ}C$ were effective in germination than priming at other temperatures. 5. Osmotic priming with PEG accelerated germination of forages compared to coated seeds in Petri-dishes, while coated seeds germinated more slowly, but showed better emergence and superior growth to those of primed or intact seeds in the field. 6. Priming seeds increased yield slightly, and coating seeds significantly increased its yield on hilly area.
