Aesthetic Characteristics of the Hanji Dress Shirt (한지로 제작된 남성 셔츠의 미적 특성)

  • Recently more than ever, interest in Korean tradition has been on the increase, with an active movement to follow tradition. There are various merits for expression with the use of Korean paper as a clothing material. The purpose of this study was to assess the aesthetic characteristics of men's shirts fashioned using Korean paper (Hanji). The following conclusions were obtained from an analysis of the aesthetic characteristics of Hanji shirts. First, Hanji has a peculiar texture, with natural characteristics due to the direct use of naturally handcrafted materials. Hanji shirts have the natural beauty of pure Hanji, without artificial treatment or other subsidiary materials, with the exception of thread. Secondly, Hanji shirts with decorative details and trimmings, such as frills, pin tuck, embroidery and spangles, express an ornamental beauty. Thirdly, Hanji shirts with frills or a fringe have real movement when worn and spangles give the illusion of movement due to changes in color or twinkling caused by light giving the beauty of rhythmical motion. Fourthly, Hanji shirts produced using the application of various techniques, such as crumple, painting and dying, express artistic beauty. Fifthly, Hanji shirts can express traditional beauty, even if created whit modem designs, but using traditional materials.

  • The performance-art costume is a tool for expression that can dynamically display the intention of a production. The purpose of this study is to examine the whole costume for performance arts targeting musical works, to which were added such elements as music, dance, and drama, among performance arts in several genres. This study aims to consider how the symbol contained in the costume was intended to be expressed by inferring a change in performance costume and character as the stage costume. Accordingly, the following research problems were established in this study. First, Which role does the costume play in performance art? Second, into which types can the performance-art costume be classified depending on the kind of performance art? Third, what is the expressive method for the performance-art costume? To examine the types of performance-art costume, the acting costume, the singing costume, the dancing costume and the rhythmic performance costume were considered. As a result, the performance costume can be seen to have been designed through the effect of a change in color by lighting, through the differentiation of character caused by excessive decoration, through the differentiation in material for free movement, and through symbolic expression.

Textbooks and Textiles: Fashion in East Asia, 1920-1945

  • From the 1920s to 1945, East Asia experienced radical social change with the introduction of new fashion styles, and new ways of thinking, from the West. The emergence of a new generation of "new women" educated in modern schools was part of this phenomenon, and functioned as a trend-setting influence in East Asian society. In schools, education in dressmaking, sewing, and home economics were important parts of female education. Adopting a new fashion style is, by necessity, accompanied by the new technology of dressmaking. Given that ready-made clothing was not generally available, dressmaking education also served to introduce a new material culture. In Korea and Taiwan under Japanese colonization, the greater part of school curricula and textbooks mirrored those in Japan, which enabled these countries to develop and adopt transnational styles as well as local styles. This research explores the transition of women's fashion in East Asia in modern and colonial conditions from the 1920s to the 1940s by analysing curricula and textbooks on dressmaking in comparison with the prevailing styles in each region. This is expected to suggest the impact of modernity in East Asia and the transnational styles of fashion in colonial Korea and Taiwan, as well as Japan, developed within the local culture. Colonial conditions are also discussed in terms of their impact and limitations in the transition of styles.

Hotel Uniform Proposal for Jeju I

  • The purpose of this research is to propose employee uniforms for tourist hotels on Jeju Island, such uniforms that embrace Jeju's unique culture and promote the tourism of Jeju Island. It has been suggested that there exists a need for hotel employee uniforms to attract more tourist attention and boost Jeju's tourism industry. We designed the uniform after analyzing the empirical data collected from academia thesis, periodicals, papers and pictures from internet search, and fashion industry magazines. The uniform analysis and production procedures are as follows: (1) precedent research case review (2) current (existing) uniform status survey (3) latest fashion trend analysis (2010 - 2014) (4) creating the uniform implementing the trend-based design with Gal Cheon, Jeju's cultural product material. We found tipping points of the design through literature and trend analysis; we developed appropriate uniforms accordingly that are harmonious with Jeju's unique identity. We received great evaluations on the appearance and comfort as well. A new concept of uniform featuring Gal Cheon has been proposed. It is expected that the uniforms will promote the brand image of Jeju as an international freedom city and its culture.

  • This thesis is about "manggon" that holds down man's top knot hair and its accessaries "pungjam", "kwanja". manggon was seen first time in the mural of Donwhang kae won chon bo during T'ang period (713-756). The "Tu Aek Ra" manggon shown in this mural would be the origin and beginning of maggon's usage. Also the "Sha" that was placed on top of the hair for decoration purpose is believed to be a former form of "manggon" Before the short hair cut was enforced, wearing the "kwan"(head gear) was considered as an impotant etiguette. Thus the head gear was treasured and the manggon which was the most essential piece to cover down the hair before to put on the head gear was regarded as the most important piece. However, since the manggon was tied very tightly around the forehead, manggon caused some sickness. From my private collections of man's head gears and ornament, 121 items were selected and used for analysis and the followings were found: 1. Pungjam was divided into 8 categories according to its shape and a research was made on its unique structural characteristic on each categories. 2. Kwanja's material and design that were used are all in accordance to the historical recordings.

Suggestions of Movement-Assistive Knee Pad Designs: Focusing on Preference and Satisfaction Evaluations Using Virtual Avatars' Wearing (움직임 보조를 위한 무릎 보호대 디자인 제안: 선호도 및 가상 착용 이미지를 이용한 만족도 평가를 중심으로)

  • This study evaluated designs via the consumers' function and design preferences survey for using product design images, virtual avatar wearing images and product explanations that identified consumers' function and design preferences for knee protection pads as well as to develop movement assistive knee pad designs. We developed Design A for men and Design B for women. For Design A, the front of the knee supports muscles and alleviates pain with a hole. Mesh material with good ventilation was applied to enhance wearing comfort. The color was achromatic for a modern style, and the hook fastener and loops enabled easy wear and removal of the pad while controlling size and pressure strength. For Design B, taping details seamlessly support muscles in the knee area with fabrics less than 0.1 cm thick and with long sleeves in the diverse sizes. The design's satisfaction assessment showed that potential consumers were satisfied with Design A and Design B for overall design and functional features. Over 77% wanted to use/wear and purchase designs; in addition, over 78% expected it would help with walking and relieve knee pain. The results can be helpful for designers when deciding designs for manufacturing and commercializing kneepad products.

  • The purpose of this study is to show inherent and differentiated beauty by designing costume knitwear using Dancho patterns representing peculiar beauty, thus expressing free and convenient knitwear in the modern sense for women with the image of reasonableness and elegance, proposing knit design using high-class materials for satisfying the demand for the highest. With regard to expression technique of works, I selected computer Jacquard method to indicate effective comparison effect of expression material and made expression with $12{\sim}14$ gauge as base by using computer knitting machine. Through above-mentioned research process and design using Knit CAD system, I obtained following conclusion. First, it is possible to express variously and widely traditional patterns by making the most of the beauty of the orient and by recomposing the patterns of plant patterns representing "feminine image". Second, it is possible to widely represent the sense you can feel from knit by expressing variously diversity of knit structure and Jacquard knitting structure and gauge. Finally, it is possible to express designs more freely and imaginably by using computer Knit CAD system instead of actual knitting of various knit expression technique and materials application.

  • This is a study on the art style of amimal fight in Scytian ornaments which had been popular in Steppe region of Eurasia. Animals were considered to have magical power and to provide protection against evil or disaster and representations of them thus occupied an important place in life. This style reflected the mythology, the ethical and aesthetic ideals of the warrior-nomad. With a magnificent understanding of composition and the essential nature of the material, craftsmen fashioned utilitarian objects in animal form: weaponry, horse trappings, clothes, ornaments and jewellery and other everyday objects were all decorated with zoomorphic motifs. Without copying nature, they accurately conveyed the essence of every beast depicted. The highly stylized modelling uses bold accentuated planes, while distinctive features associated with particular species are emphasized and exaggerated. The purpose and meaning of the animal motifs used in Scythian ornaments appears that in some cases the work was intended to be purely ornamental, while many times the motifs had symbolic meaning (such as the successful dominance of the aggressor over the victim portrayed in the attack scenes). Magical use of symbols may have been intended to guarantee the power of the aggressor.

A Study on the Preference to the Textiles for Jackets of College Students (재킷용 의복소재에 대한 대학생의 선호도 조사연구)

  • This research was designed to investigate the preferred textiles for the jackets of college students. 105 subjects that majored in fashion design were surveyed. The subjects selected three favorite materials, according to the seasons, among 120 samples presented in a swatch book and their frequency of choice was tallied. The extent of the subjects' preference was compared by season and gender The results of this study were as follows: 1. College students preferred dark Grayish Brown plain variation wool Crossbred foremost as a textile for the spring and fan season. 2. White plain cotton Plisse was the most preferred material for summer. 3. Olive Gray cotton Corduroy was the most preferred textile for winter. 4. For thickness and weight, the textiles chosen for winter were thicker and heavier than those chosen for other seasons. 5. For fiber content, natural fiber such as wool were preferred for all seasons. 6. For the type of fabrics weave, a plain variation weave was preferred for spring and fall, twill was preferred for winter and plain weave was preferred for summer. 7. Collage students preferred gray and brown tones for the spring, fall and winter season. For color characteristics, solid fabrics were generally preferred and check patterns were especially preferred for the winter season. 8. Girl students generally preferred lighter and thinner fabrics than those chosen by boys.

Footwear Wearing Practices and Overall Shoes Satisfaction for Males (성인 남성의 신발 착용실태와 구두 착용만족도)

  • The purpose of this study was to provide information for the manufacturers of shoes for males to develop more adequate footwear. The data was collected through a questionnaire on purchasing and wearing practices of footwear, and overall satisfaction with the shoes for males. The questionnaire survey was conducted on 237 male adults in the Cheongju area. Most of the respondents were commuting by their own cars and the average walking time in their shoes was five minutes per day. The main reasons for buying new footwear were to replace the worn out footwear or to adapt the color and design coordination with other apparel. Males generally bought footwear from sports brand retailers and individual footwear stores. The criteria for purchasing in order of considered were size, design, price, comfort, and style coordination. During the spring, autumn and winter seasons, the footwear of first choice was ordinary shoes, followed by exercise shoes, but during the summer season they wore sandals next to the ordinary shoes. Regarding the form of the shoes, they preferred classic models with round front and strings. They were satisfied with the design, color and size of the shoes, but the price, quality and durability of the material were considered to be unsatisfactory.
