Purpose: To understand symptoms and signs in soft contact lens wearers the authors evaluate the attribution of the tear test to the contact lens related symptoms and signs. Methods: Sixty-two healthy soft contact lens wearers (23.95${\pm}$4.38 years old, 18.60${\pm}$16.92 months of prior lens wear) were participated in this study. 3 kinds of tear test and McMonnies' questionnaire test were performed for the soft contact lens wearers and subjective symptoms and objective signs were graded using CCLRU scales during the study period. Results: In this surveys, we found ocular dryness, redness and tiredness are the most common frequent and severe symptoms in soft contact lens wearers. Frequency of the ocular dryness, redness and tiredness are associated with grittiness, burning sensation and foreign body sensation respectively, and severity of the photophobia, foreign body sensation are associated with unstable vision and grittiness and which are associated with score of McMonnies' Questionnaire. Conjunctival redness and limbal redness are major signs but those are not need to be clinical care and rarely occurred corneal and conjunctival staining which are associated with tear break-up-time statistically. Conclusions: Dryness, redness and tiredness are primary common symptoms in Korean soft contact lens wearers. The frequency of those symptoms are increased with the period of soft contact lens wear and those are associated with other symptoms but have no relationship with signs.
Objectives : This study is performed for proposing reasonable clinical study protocol at International standard clinical study of osteoarthritis of Knee Joint. Methods : We gave the eighteen oriental medicine doctors the questionnaire and the video about female patient who diagnosed Knee joint of osteoarthritis above 60 years old and they tested same patients using differentiation of symptoms and signs. Then they retested it after We educated them with diagnosis education text. To develop the Korean standard differentiation of the symptoms and signs for the stroke(KSDS), the committee on Stroke Diagnosis Standardization of traditional Korean medicine(TKM) was organized dy nineteen experts in college of Korean medicine. On July 9th 2005, the second consultation meeting was held in Daejeon, Korea. Fifteen experts of the committee attended the meeting and they discussed the KSDS and came to a consensus. The 15-member committee consensus was as follows: First, board members defined the stroke on the basis of TKM. Second, they divided the symptoms and signs of stroke into five categories- fire and heat, dampness and phlegm, blood stasis, qi deficiency, yin deficiency. Third, the symptom indicator of each differentiation type for the stroke was recommended. KSDS-1 will be applied to the clinical practice and revised.
We found seventeen dairy cattle with the abnormal signs in cardiovascular and gastrointestinal systems after feeding of the yew foilage. Among them three cattle were dead due to yew poisoning. Among the remaining fourteen dairy cattle, four cattle showed similar symptoms as did dead cattle. Although the remaining ten dairy cattle did not show any abnormal signs, we conducted a therapy of forced magnesium sulfate infusion because the yew consumption might have been occurred in all cattle. As a result of the therapy, we could not found further signs of yew poisoning. The performance of the therapy and the treatment procedures adapted by the therapy could be concluded as follows: The cardioselective toxicity and inhibition of peristaltic activity by the taxine in yew foilage might be involved in the symptoms of acute poisoning as anorexia, dullness, muscle tremor, dyspnea, and sudden death. We also performed the dose response relationship of taxine to the range of clinical symptoms and examined recovery performances. Through the autopsy of the cattle, we could confirm the presence of yew foilages that might have caused the poisoning in the gastrointestinal tract. However, we could not identify further abnormalities in other organs. In this case report, we demonstrated that practice of the forced magnesium sulfate infusion in yew poisoning was helpful for the attenuating the taxine poisoning by blocking the further proceeding of the toxic effect.
To attain a simple and reliable method of evaluating the thyroid function the reliability of the clinical manifestation and the conventional thyroid function tests in diagnosing the hyperthyroidism was studied. The subjects included 184 patients with hyperthyroidism and 66 cases with euthyroidism, who were treated at the Thyroid Clinic, Seoul National University Hospital, from July 1971 through August 1972. The observed results were as follows: 1. In the cases of hyperthyroidism, 19% of the patients were male and 81% female; in the cases of euthyroidism, 7.6% of the patients were male and 92.4% female. The majority of the patients were in 2nd to 4th decades of their lives. 2. There were objective signs clearly manifested in hyperthyroidism which were rare or absent in the euthyroid state. These clinical signs included wide pulse pressure, tachycardia, systolic murmur, exophthalmos, tremor, and warm skin. In the hyperthyroid state 91.3% of the cases manifested two or more of the above signs, whereas in the euthyroid state no patients manifested any two of the above signs. 3. The most frequent complaints of the patients with thyroid disease were palpitation, weight loss, increased appetite, heat intolerance, perspiration, hunger feeling; nervousness, exertional dyspnea, etc. There was no clear difference in the incidence of the symptoms between hyperthyroidism and euthyroidism. 4. In the diagnosis of hyperthyroidism, the reliability of thyroid ?unction tests was as follows; $T_7$ was 92.4% reliable, $^{125}IT_3$ resin uptake rate 91.6% reliable, $^{131}I$ thyroid uptake rate in 24 hrs. 89.4% reliable, serum $T_4$ level 85.9% reliable and BMR 75.5% reliable. Therefore the careful observation of the clinical manifestation of the disease is a simple and reliable way of making a correct diagnosis of either hyperthyroidism or euthyroidism. 5. In hyperthyroidism there shows no correlationship between the results of the thyroid function test and clinical signs but a high BMR was associated with both tachycardia and systolic murmur.
The mosquito-borne pathogen Zika virus may result in neurological disorders such as Guillain-Barré syndrome and microcephaly. The virus is classified as a member of the Flaviviridae family and its wide spread in multiple continents is a significant threat to public health. So, there is a need to develop animal models to examine the pathogenesis of the disease and to develop vaccines. To examine the clinical profile during Zika virus infection, we infected neonatal and adult wild-type mice (C57BL/6 and Balb/c) and compared the clinical signs of African-lineage strain (MR766) and Asian-lineage strain (PRVABC59, MEX2-81) of Zika virus. Consistent with previous reports, eight-week-old female Balb/c mice infected with these viral strains showed no changes in body weight, survival rate, and neurologic signs, but demonstrated increases in the weights of spleens and hearts. However, one-day-old neonates showed significantly lower survival rate and body weight with the African-lineage strain than the Asian-lineage strain. These results confirmed the pathogenic differences between Zika virus strains. We also evaluated the clinical responses in neonatal and adult mice of different strains. Our findings suggest that these are useful mouse models for characterization of Zika virus for vaccine development.
An 8-year-old female neutered Maltese dog exhibited signs of serious thunderstorm phobia including panting, wandering, shivering, hiding, crying or whining, or trying to escape from the house. In this study, we administered clomipramine and alprazolam and observed behavioral improvement for 3 years. Clinical symptoms measured according to the storm phobia assessment (SPA) were significantly high with an initial total score of 19 points. However, it improved to a total score of 8 on day 176 after drugs administration and returned to the normal level with the total score of 5 points on the 983 days. When the symptoms for the first 4 treatments and the last 4 treatments were compared in 2 groups, the total score of all clinical symptoms decreased to -62.83% in the last 4 treatments. This study found that treatment with alprazolam and clomipramine was associated with a decrease in clinical signs of storm anxiety, suggesting that two drugs would be effective in reducing symptoms caused by anxiety, thunderstorm phobia, and noise phobia. In this follow up study, we hope that more studies would be conducted on behavior modification for treatment of storm phobia in veterinary medicine.

Although Nerium indicum poisoning is a globally rare occurrence, Nerium oleander poisoning is known to occur frequently in the Mediterranean regions. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of accidental Nerium indicum poisoning in Korea. Its poisoning symptoms and signs are similar to that of digitalis poisoning, because of the presence of cardiac glycosides in Nerium indicum. A 16-year-old boy was admitted to the emergency department four hours prior to the accidental ingestion of Nerium indicum petals. The patient complained of nausea, vomiting, and dizziness. His initial vital signs were stable; laboratory blood test results were within normal levels, except for the blood digoxin level (1.5 ng/dL). An electrocardiogram (ECG) analysis showed normal sinus rhythm, progressive PR prolongation and second-degree Morbiz type I AV block. Conservative treatments including activated charcoal administration were conducted, because toxic symptoms and signs were not severe. The patient was admitted to the intensive care unit for close observation. His ECG was converted to normal rhythm after 1 day and the toxic symptoms and signs were completely resolved after 4 days.
A 7-year-old Scottish Straight cat presented with hypersalivation and generalized hyperesthesia. The cat was provided tuna-based food for 2 to 3 weeks before clinical symptoms appeared. Abdominal ultrasonography showed a heterogeneous, hyperechoic mesentery with hypoechoic foci. Pansteatitis was tentatively diagnosed and the cat was treated with vitamin E, anti-inflammatory drugs, and dietary changes. The clinical signs and changes in mesenteric fat on serial ultrasonography resolved. After feeding tuna-based food again, the same clinical signs and mesenteric changes on ultrasound recurred, which recovered through the same treatment. This study suggests that ultrasonography can be useful for diagnosis and monitoring of feline pansteatitis.

Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) commonly infects cloven-hoofed livestock animals such as cattle, pig, sheep, and goat and its clinical signs are well-known. Besides livestock, FMD can be transmitted among cloven-hoofed animals in the wild. FMD mostly affects livestock animals in farms, but, wild animals are likely to play a pivotal role in spreading the disease due to their way of free living. In the case of deer, the clinical signs of FMD vary widely from subclinical to severe infections. Thus, in some deer species, it may be hard to verify clinical signs of FMD. A deer may carry the virus up to 11 weeks after exposure, shedding the virus during the period. However, deer is not considered as a typical host for persistent infection like buffalo, cattle or sheep. In Korea, small-scale livestock farms which have less than 10 animals make up 63.6% of the entire livestock farms. Considering raising environment in deer farms, it is assumed that the risk of virus excretion and consequent transmission of FMD among deers is relatively lower than other cloven-hoofed animals. However, Sika deer and Elk which are typical deer species in Korea would manifest mild to subclinical symptoms upon FMD infection. Therefore, laboratory testing is necessary to confirm FMD in these animals because of difficulty in verifying clinical signs and the risk of virus shedding during inapparent infection.
