Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify and describe nurses' experience of a career ladder program (CLP) in a general hospital in Korea. Methods: The data were collected from 15 nurses who participated in the CLP. Each nurse completed individual in-depth interviews, for which the main interview question was "How do you describe your experience of CLP?" All interview data were transcribed and were analyzed using the grounded theory method. Results: The core category of the experience of CLP was identified as "challenging to rebirth as an expert". The participants used five action/interaction strategies such as "taking some time for introspection", "appreciating the essence of nursing", "making use of feedback positively", "throwing away doubts about their own capabilities", "exerting themselves with confidence". The consequence of the process of adjusting to CLP was "positioning a differentiated expert". Conclusion: The results of this study show that participants recognized CLP as a powerful resource which leads them to professional growth and development. Thus, CLP could be utilized as a clinical career-promoting program and ultimately as a program for providing high-quality nursing services.

Background: The purpose of the study was to analyze the contents and importance of clinical practicum education in adult health nursing. Methods: This is a descriptive study using content analysis for identifying the items of clinical nursing checklists gathered from 13 university nursing programs accredited by Korean Accreditation Board of Nursing Education. Items in the checklist were standardized in accordance with the Nursing Intervention Classification (NIC) and categorized into simple-technical skill, complex-technical skill, and disease-specific care. The perceived significance of each item was examined by surveying nurses who in charge of nurse education from various clinical setting. Results: A total of 182 items in the clinical practicum contents were analyzed, and the terminologies of each item were variously described among nursing schools. Fifty percent of the total items were categorized into simple-technical skill. In terms of clinical importance, expert validity results showed that nurses considered infection control, infection protection, and fall prevention as the most significant items, which was not the same as the most common items in the clinical nursing checklist. Conclusion: These findings suggest that standardized nursing terminologies are needed to describe a nursing practicum checklist. Clinical importance of each item in the checklist should be taken into consideration in developing a clinical nursing checklist to assist the students in achieving the competencies as a clinical nurse.
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to develop a case review form for detecting adverse events through a medical records review in hospitalized patients in South Korea. Methods: To develop the case review form, several literatures were reviewed, first. Through the clinical expert meeting, screening criteria were selected and case review form was developed. Result: The Korean version of case review form consisted of the review form-1 for adverse event screening and form-2 for adverse event identification. The applied methodology for the case review form is determined according to the previous studies. For example, the method used in the first stage review is nurse review. Furthermore, the National Coordinating Council for Medication Errors Reporting and Prevention index is used to categorize disability, and a scale of 1 to 6 was used in the causation scores and preventability scores, respectively. Through the clinical expert meeting, a total of 41 screening criteria were selected. Conclusion: The Korean specific case review form was developed for detecting adverse events in hospitalized patients. Purpose: This study was done to develop and test validity and reliability of on instrument for predicting nursing intention for SARS patient care. Method: The psychometric properties of a SARS patient care attrition prediction tool, based on the Theory of Planned Behavior, were examined in this study. The Three-phase design involved a) salient beliefs generated from clinical nurses (n=43) b) content validation by expert panel evaluations(n=5) c) face validation by plot testing (n=10) d) and instrument validation in a cross sectional survey (n=299). Psychometric analysis of survey data provided empirical evidence of the construct validity and reliability of the instrument. Result: Principal component analysis verified the hypothesized 6-factor solution, explaining $68.2\%$ of variance, and Alpha coefficients of .7538 to .9389 indicated a high internal consistency of the instrument. Conclusion: The instrument can be used by nurse administrators and researcher to assess clinical nurses' salient beliefs about caring for SARS patients, guide tailored intervention strategies to effective caring, and evaluate the effectiveness of interventions.
Purpose: This study was done to provide oncology nurses systemic guidelines designed to perform telephone counseling in outpatient settings treating patients with chemotherapy. Methods: Symptoms which are frequently questioned were identified through case reports recorded by 4 clinical nurse specialists from January 4 to December 31. 2010. Fifteen clinical experts and two hemato-oncologists reviewed the developed draft. Their opinions were synthesized to arrive at consensus on the ideal guidelines. This process confirmed content validity. The two hemato-oncologists also verified the face validity. Results: The six symptoms which were most frequently asked about were identified through 4,644 case reports and concerned pain, fever, skin alteration, nausea/vomiting, stomatitis and diarrhea. Evidence-based telephone triage guidelines for the 6 major symptoms in patients receiving chemotherapy were developed. Conclusion: These guidelines will help oncology nurses from novice to expert incorporate evidence-based telenursing into their practice.
Purpose : This study aimed to identify and describe the leadership experience of advanced practice nurses (APN). Methods : Data were collected through five focus group interviews in 2022 with a total of 24 APNs in groups of 4-6 participants. All interviews were recorded, transcribed, and data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Results : Nine categories emerged from three main themes. First, "Roles of APN leadership" comprised a trusted clinical expert, a moderator for the entire team, a resource person for nurturing the next generation, and a change agent for improving clinical practice. Second, "Facilitators and barriers to APN leadership" included ambiguity of APN role, support system, and institutional backing. Third, "Strategies for strengthening APN leadership competencies" comprised systematic leadership education and speaking up for APNs. Conclusion : APNs are passionate about their expertise and practice, but lack the legal and organizational authority and support to provide successive leadership. Systematic education including leadership and organizational advocacy will enable APN to provide leadership that benefits patients, institutions, and the wider healthcare system.
Purpose: Competency is a key foundation of the nursing education curriculum and a baseline element of nursing practice. The purpose of this study was to explore the competencies of community health nurses in a maternal early childhood sustained home-visiting program based on nurses' field experiences. Methods: The participants were 21 nurses who had more than 1 year of experience in this program. Reflective interviews were performed; lasting 1 hour per nurse, on August 18, 2016, and the collected data were analyzed using qualitative directed content analysis. Results: Twenty-four themes were extracted for 9 competencies. The major themes included implementing a long-term relationship-based approach, providing client-led service rather than expert-led service, helping mothers with psychosocial difficulties, and applying skills in a practical manner in the home environment. Conclusion: In order to develop a home-visiting program as part of maternal-early childhood nursing practice, nurses should develop competencies that help them make significant and positive interventions. Results indicate that the curriculum for community health nurses should be changed to improve competencies in building relationships with clients and to focus on the application of skills in specific cases and in clinical practice.
Purpose: Patients hope to receive 'respected nursing' which guarantees the right of privacy and treatment as a human being in hospitals. However, no specific tool has been developed to measure patients' perceived respect from nurses while staying in hospitals. This study was conducted to develop a tool to measure the respect that they experience in hospital. Method: A basic questionnaire was made based on research literature, pilot studies, and collected data via patients' interviews. The questionnaire was verified by 5 members of an expert group, a chief nurse in the clinical area and 10 patients. We distributed the questionnaires to 266 randomly selected inpatients and carried out analyses of factors and content to evaluate the validity and reliability of the questionnaire. Result: According to the results of factor analyses, three factors such as 'cordial treatment', 'consideration', and 'recognition' were extracted, which took up to 61 percent from all variants. Final questionnaires has 30 questions on a 4-point scale. Conclusion: The questionnaire which was designed through the study showed a high reliability and validity. We anticipate that this questionnaire will contribute to fostering nursing care with respect for patients.
