  • This study aimed to examine climacteric symptoms, health promoting behaviors, aging anxiety in middle-aged women and determine whether these variables influence aging anxiety. The subjects were 228 middle-aged women. SPSS 27.0 was used to perform t-test, ANOVA, correlation, and stepwise multiple regression analysis. The average age of the participants was 53.25 years old. Climacteric symptoms (r=.552, p<.001), health promoting behaviors (r=-.290, p<.001) were significantly correlated with aging anxiety. The participants' perception of their health status (β=-.132, p<.001), climacteric symptoms (β=.464, p=.016), and health promoting behaviors (β=-.146, p=.005) were significant predictors of aging anxiety, and the explanatory power of these variables was 33.7.0%. This study reveals the necessity that health promotion programs should be provided, taking into consideration personal perceptions of menopausal symptoms and health.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the question of whether there is any difference in dietary habits, climacteric symptoms, and general health characteristics of middle-aged women according to food supplements (FS) use. A total of 745 midlife females participated in a face-to-face interview conducted by qualified interviewers, which guaranteed a higher quality of data collection. Three levels of FS use were defined: None, Single, and Multi for 0, 1, and 2 or more types of FS use, respectively. None, Single, and Multi accounted for 33.56%, 33.29%, and 33.15% of total subjects, respectively. FS users (Single and Multi) exerted more interest in FS and were more likely to believe that FS is helpful for health promotion and amelioration of climacteric symptoms than None (P<0.0001). Self-perceived health status of Multi was lower than that of None, but not different from Single (P<0.05). Factor analysis extracted three factors for dietary habits: regularity, variety and moderation, and four factors for climacteric symptoms: emotional, physical, psycho-somatic, and hot flash. The factor scores for dietary variety as well as emotional, psycho-somatic, and hot flash symptoms were higher for FS user than for None (P<0.01). Single reported more frequent family meals compared to None. Findings of the present study elucidated potential links between the level of FS use, dietary habits, and climacteric symptoms of middle-aged women, suggesting a possible scenario: the greater the climacteric symptoms a woman perceives, the more likely the woman will adopt FS use, the greater the efforts toward dietary improvement, such as dietary variety. Based on that, in this study, more peri-menopausal women belonged to Single and Multi; further investigation on the association between FS use, dietary quality, and climacteric symptoms in conjunction with menopausal status may be needed.

  • This is a comparative descriptive study conducted for 178 middle-aged women who were residing in Seoul and aged between 41 to 64 (95 in control group, and 83 in experimental group). The study was aimed to examine their climacteric symptoms, degree of fatigue, depression, anxiety and quality of sleep and to examine the differences on the symptoms between the two groups. Data were collected from April 1 to May 15, 2002 through self-statement using structured questionnaires. The collected data were verified with descriptive statistics, ? -test, t-test, ANOVA using SPSS/PC(+). The results are as follows. 1) The average scores of the climacteric symptoms were 1.56 .36 for the control group, and 1.55 .33 for the group taking relexzone massage, showing no significant difference between the groups (t=.15, p=.88). 2) The average scores of the degree of fatigue were 2.17 .65 for the control group, and 2.40 .66 for the group taking relexzone massage, showing a significant difference between the groups. (t=-2.31, p=.02) 3) The average scores of depression were 1.91 .50 for the control group, and 2.05 .42 for the group taking relexzone massage, showing a significant difference between the groups (t=-1.99, p=.05). 4) The average scores of anxiety were 1.54 .60 for the control group, and 1.57 .53 for the group taking relexzone massage, showing no significant difference between the groups (t=-.33, p=.74). 5) The average scores of quality of sleep were 2.97 .49 for the control group, and 2.98 .42 for the group taking relexzone massage, showing no significant difference between the groups(t=-.08, p=.93). Based on these results, the middle-aged women who take relexzone massage are considered to have less fatigue and depression than those who do not. As physiological regression progresses and the structure and role in the family are restructured, middle-aged women are like to experience various climacteric symptoms. As a nursing intervention, relexzone massage can be applied to middle-aged women to reduce their stress, climacteric symptoms and emotional anxiety, ultimately promoting their health. In order to implement relexzone massage as a nursing intervention, further testing on the psycho-neuroimmunologjcal effects of relexzone massage is necessary.

  • The purpose of this study was to provide basic data for developing a nursing intervention for climacteric women by describing a health promoting lifestyle. Also this study identified the relationship between self-efficacy and family function which are factors affecting the health promoting behaviors. The subjects of this study were 143 women from 40 to 59 years of age. The data was analyzed using SPSS program for t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson's correlation coefficients. The results of the study are as follows; 1. The average score of performance in the health promoting lifestyle was 2.82. The variable with the highest degree of performance was the sanitary environment and reconciliatory relationship(3.31), whereas the one with the lowest degree was the professional health maintenance(2.27). The average score of self-efficacy was 71.44, family function was 68.50, and menopausal symptoms was 60.30. 2. There was a statistically significant difference in performance in health promoting lifestyle according to satisfaction of marital life. Also there was a significant difference between self-efficacy, religion, and family function. 3. Performance in the health promoting lifestyle was positively related to self-efficacy, and family function and negatively related to menopausal symptoms. Self-efficacy was positively related to family function. In conclusion, performance in health promoting lifestyle was related to self-efficacy, family function and menopausal symptoms. These factors were affected by religion, family type, and satisfaction of marital life. Therefore, health promoting programs to increase climacteric women's health should be a planed program based on results of this study.
