  • The flash point and the AIT(auto-ignition temperature) are the most important combustible properties used to determine the potential for the fire and explosion hazards of flammable material. In order to know the accuracy of data in MSDS(Material Safety Data Sheet), the flash point of n-acids were measured by using Pensky-Martens closed cup tester(ASTM D93), Setaflash closed cup tester(ASTM D3278), Tag open cup tester(ASTM D1310) and Cleveland open cup tester(ASTM D92). Also, the AIT of n-acids were measured by using ASTM E659-78 tester. The measured the flash points and the AIT were compared with literatures and MSDS in KOSHA. The measured the flash points and the AIT were different from those in literatures and MSDS. Therefore, This paper shows that it is needed to investigate the MSDS compatibility of n-acids for the fire safety objectives.

  • The lower flash points for the flammable binary systems, 2-propanol+formic acid and 2-propanol+n-butyric acid, were measured by Cleveland open cup tester. The optimization method using van Laar equation and the Raoult's law were used to estimate the lower flash points and were compared with experimentally-derived data. The calculated values based on the optimization method were found to be better than those based on the Raoult's law.

  • The flash point, explosion limits, autoignition temperature(AIT) are important combustible properties which need special concern in the chemical safety process that handle hazardous substances. For the evaluation of the flammable properties of n-butylacetate, this study was investigated the explosion limits of n-butylacetate in the reference data. The flash points, fire points and AIT by the ignition delay time of n-butylacetate were experimented. The lower flash points of n-butylacetate by using the Setaflash and Pensky-Martens closed-cup testers were $24^{\circ}C$ and $26^{\circ}C$, respectively. The flash points of n-butylacetate using the Tag and Cleveland open cup testers are measured $31^{\circ}C$ and $40^{\circ}C$, respectively. And the fire points of n-butylacetate by the Tag and Cleveland open cup testers were measured $32^{\circ}C$ and $41^{\circ}C$. The AIT of n-butylacetate measured by the ASTM 659E tester was measured as $411^{\circ}C$. The lower explosion limit of lower flash point $24^{\circ}C$, which was measured by the Setaflash tester, was calculated to be 1.40 vol%. Also, the upper explosion limit of upper flash point $67^{\circ}C$ the Setaflash tester was calculated to be 12.5 vol%.

  • The flash point is the lowest temperature at which there is enough concentration of flammable vapor to form an ignitable mixture with air. The flash point is a major physical property used to analyse the fire and explosion hazards of a flammable liquid solution. The flash point data for pure components are easily available in several literature. But the flash points of the flammable binary solutions appear to be scarce in the literature. The objective of this study is to measure and estimate the flash point of acetic acid-formic acid system. Cleveland open cup tester was used to measure the flash point. The experimental data were compared with the values estimated by the Raoult's law and the optimization methods based on van Laar and Wilson equations. As a result, the estmated values by optimization methods were found to be better than those based on the Raoult's law.

  • The flash point is one of the most significant combustion properties of flammable liquids in industrial processes when evaluation process safety, In this paper, Cleveland open cup tester is used to measure the flash points for the two binary systems (n-propanol + formic acid and acetic acid + propionic acid). The measured flash points were compared with the values calculated by the Raoult's law and the optimization method using van Laar and Wilson equations. The calculated values based on the optimization method were found to be better than those based on the Raoult's law.

  • Flash points for the flammable binary systems, n-propanol+acetic acid and n-propanol+n-propionic acid, were measured by Cleveland open cup tester. The Raoult's law, the van Laar equation and the UNIQUAC equation were used for predicting flash points and were compared with experimentally-derived data. The calculated values based on the van Laar and UNIQUAC equations were found to be better than those based on the Raoult's law. And the predictive curve of the flash point prediction model based on the UNIQUAC equation described the experimentally-derived data more effectively than was the case when the prediction model was based upon the the van Laar equation.

  • In this study, combustion characteristics were measured by selecting di-n-buthylamine, which is widely used as an emulsifier, insecticide, additive, rubber vulcanization accelerator, corrosion inhibitor, and raw material for dye production. The flash point of the di-n-buthylamine was measured by Setaflash, Pensky-Martens, Tag, and Cleveland testers. And the AIT of the di-n-buthylamine was measured by ASTM 659E. The explosion limits of the di-n-buthylamine was calculated using the measured flash points by Setaflash tester. The flash point of the di-n-buthylamine by using Setaflash and Pensky-Martens closed-cup testers were experimented at 38 ℃ and 43 ℃, respectively. The flash points of the di-n-buthylamine by Tag and Cleveland open cup testers were experimented at 48 ℃. The AIT of the di-n-buthylamine was experimented at 247 ℃. The LEL and UEL calculated by using lower and upper flash points of Setaflash tester were calculated at 0.69 vol% and 7.7 vol%, respectively. The measurement of the flash point measurement and the calculation method of the explosion limit prediction presented in this study can be used to study the fire and explosion characteristics of the other combustible liquids.

  • Because of the vertical combustion characteristics of combustible substances, accurate substance safety information for their safe use, handling and transportation is essential. The flash point, fire point, explosion limits and autoignition temperature (AIT) are important safety parameters which need special attention in chemical plants and laboratories that handle dangerous materials. In this study, tert-butylbenzene which is widely used as an intermediate material in the chemical industry was selected.
