Underground $CO_2$ storage technology is one of the most effective methods to reduce atmospheric $CO_2$. In this study, $CO_2$ storage condition was simulated in the laboratory. Sandstone and shale specimens were saturated in 1M NaCl and were reacted at $45^{\circ}C$, 10 atm for 4 weeks. The physical and microstructural properties of rock specimens were measured. Variations on physical properties of shale specimens were bigger than those of sandstone specimens, such as volume, density, elastic wave velocity, Poisson's ratio and Young's modulus. Microstructure were analyzed using X-ray computed tomography. Total number of pores were decreased, and average volume, average area and average equivalent diameter of each pore were changed after $CO_2$ reaction. Swelling and leakage of clay mineral caused by $CO_2$-mineral reaction were the reason of changes. The results of this study can be applied to predict the physical and microstructural changes in underground $CO_2$ storage condition.
In this study, temperature, turbidity, suspended paniculate matter (SPM) distribution and mineral characteristics were investigated to explain spatial distribution of the turbid-water environment of Yongdam reservoir in July, 2005. Six stations were selected along a longitudinal axis of the reservoir and sampling was conducted in four depths of each station. Water temperature was showed the typical stratified structure by the effects of irradiance and inflow. Content of inorganic matter in suspended particles increased with the concentration of suspended particulate matter (SPM) due to the reduction of ash-free dry matter (AFDM). Turbidity ranged from 0.6 to 95.1 NTU and the maximum turbidity value of each station sharply increased toward downstream from upstream. The high turbidity layers were located at the depth between 12~16 m. Particle size ranged from 0.435 to $482.9{\mu}m$. day and silt-sized particles corresponded 91.9~98.9% and 1.1~8.0% in total numbers of SPM, respectively. Turbidity showed high correlations with clay (r=0.763, p<0.05) and silt content (r=0.870, p<0.05).Inorganic matter content (r=0.960, p<0.01) was more correlated with turbidity than organic matter (r=0.823, p<0.05). Mineral characterization using x-ray diffraction and electron probe microanalyzer demonstrated that the major minerals contained in the SPM were kaolinite, illite, vermiculite and smectite. As results of this study, surface water discharge as well as small size of the SPM were suggested as long-term interfering factors in settling down the turbid water in the reservoir.
Evaluation of an amplitude domain reflectometry (ADR) type soil moisture sensor as ThetaProbe ML2x using the response of frequency impedance was performed in a variety of soil porous media such as Jumunjin standard sand, weathered granite soil at Sangju area, and weathered gneiss soil at Jangsu area. The tested soils were classified with a dried condition and a wetted condition for comparing with soil volumetric water content under different installed depths of the measurement sensor. In the results the part of measurement rod including one signal rod and three shield rod 6cm in length was found to decrease the variation of measurement output voltage with insert 5cm over into the soil porous media. The measurement output voltage was verified to more stable output voltage under weathered granite soils and weathered gneiss soils contained the fine grain materials such as clay and silt minerals than the gradual grain material like as the standard sands. Therefore, measurement values by soil moisture sensor can be offered the more stable values when an contact volume between soil porous media and measurement sensor increase.
The sericite ore is formed by the hydrothermal alteration of rhyodacitic welded tuff. The alteration zone of the host rock can be classified into four types based on the mineral assemblages ; sericite, quartz-sericite, silicified and propylite zone. The sericite ore mainly occurs as vein types and fault clay along the fault plane in the quartz-sericite zone. Mineral components of the sericite ore are mainly sericite with minor diaspore, corundum and pyrite. The sericitic porcelaineous ore is mainly composed of quartz and sericite. Accessory minerals are muscovite, diaspore, sphene, corundum, pyrite, iron-oxides and etc. The chemical compositions of K2O, Al2O3, and ignition loss in the sericite ore increase largely than that of the host rock, while the compositions of SiO2, Na2O and Fe2O3 decrease. XRD patterns of the heat-treated sericite ores show the formation of mullite at $1,200^{\circ}C$. and the diaspore-bearing sericite ore forms mullite and corundum at $1,200^{\circ}C$. The differential thermal analysis of the sericite ores show small endothermic peak at 645~668$^{\circ}C$. and the diaspore-bearing sericite ore shows a strong endothermic peak at $517^{\circ}C$. It indicates that the decomposition of diaspore appear at lower temperature than that of sericite. The thermal expansivity of the sericite ores show the similar pattern. The sericite ores show the thermal expansivity of 3.3~4.7% at 900$^{\circ}C$ and 0.39~0.75% at 1,20$0^{\circ}C$, respectively. DTA-TG curves of the sericite ores show closely relations with the thermal expansivity.

Compressional wave velocity and shear wave velocity were measured for gassy sediments collected from Jinhae Bay, Korea. To distinguish inhomogeneities of gassy sediments, Computed Tomography (CT) was carried out for gassy sediment using CT Scanner. The cored sediments are composed of homogeneous and soft mud (greater than $8{\Phi}$ in mean grain size) containing clay content more than 50%. In depth interval of gassy sediments, compressional wave velocity is significantly decreased from 1480m/s to 1360m/s, indicating that the gas greatly affects compressional wave velocity due to a gas and/or degassing cracks. Shear wave velocity shows a slight increasing pattern from ${\sim}55\;m/s$ in the upper part of the core to ${\sim}58\;m/s$ at 320 cm depth, and then decreases to ${\sim}54\;m/s$ in the lower part of the core containing a small amount of gas. But shear wave velocity in the gassy sediments is slightly greater than that of non-gassy sediments in the upper part of the core. Thus, the Vp/Vs ratio is decreased (from 30 to 25) in gas charged zone. The Vp/Vs ratio is well correlated with shear wave velocity, but no correlation with compressional wave velocity. This suggests that low concentrations of gas have little affects on shear wave velocity. By CT images, the gas in the sediments is mostly concentrated around inner edge of core liner due to a long duration after sediment collection.

The Bobonaro m$\acute{e}$lange is one of the youngest syn-collisional m$\acute{e}$langes, located between the Indo-Australian and Eurasian plates. The m$\acute{e}$lange has formed in association with a collision between the Australian continental margin and the Banda arc initiated in Neogene. The Suai area at the southern part of Timor is a good place to examine the genetic relationship between the m$\acute{e}$lange and other rock sequences because various tectonostratigraphic units coexist in the area. In this study, we present the structural characteristics and spatial distribution of the Bobonaro m$\acute{e}$lange investigated as a part of 1:25K scale geologic mapping in the area, and discuss on the origin of the m$\acute{e}$lange. The Bobonaro m$\acute{e}$lange in the Suai area is composed of unmetamorphosed clay matrix and blocks of various lithologies. The clay matrix mainly is reddish brown or greenish gray in colour, and has scaly texture. Most blocks are allochthonous, but mostly derived from nearby formations. Based on the internal structure and relationship with surrounding rocks, the Bobonaro m$\acute{e}$lange is genetically classified into 1) diapiric m$\acute{e}$lange; 2) tectonic m$\acute{e}$lange; and 3) broken formation. The spatial distribution of the Bobonaro m$\acute{e}$lange indicates that it intruded all pre-collisional units including the lower Australian continental margin unit(Gondwana megasequence) and the Banda arc unit. Taking the field evidences and previous genetic models into consideration, the Bobonaro m$\acute{e}$lange is interpreted to be mainly formed as a diapiric m$\acute{e}$lange originated from Gondwana megasequence, consistently effected by faulting events. This study reflects that diapiric m$\acute{e}$lange is a significant component in recent accretionay-collision belts. It suggests that diapiric process should be considered as a main genetic factor even in ancient m$\acute{e}$lange.

Lab-scale batch experiments using several 25-L transparent acrylic reactors were conducted to develop optimum capping materials that can reduce phosphorus released from polluted sediments. The sediment used in the experiment was very fine clay(8.8 $\Phi$ in mean grain size), and organic carbon($C_{org}$) content was as high as 2%. Four kinds of batches with different capping materials Brucite($Mg(OH)_2$), Sea sand($SiO_2$), Granular-gypsum($CaSO_4{\cdot}2H_2O$), Double layer(brucite+sand), and one control batch were operated for 30 days. Phosphorus fluxes released from bottom sediments in the control batch were estimated to be 14.6 $mg{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}d^{-1}$, while 9.5 $mg{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}d^{-1}$, 5.2 $mg{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}d^{-1}$, 4.2 $mg{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}d^{-1}$, and 3.1 $mg{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}d^{-1}$ in the batch capped with Sea sand, Granular-gypsum, Double layer, and Brucite, respectively. The results obtained from lab-scale batch experiments show that there were 70% reduction of phosphorus for some materials such as Brucite, Double layer(brucite+sand), and whereas sea sand only about 35%. The pH range of surface sediment to which Brucite was applied showed about $8.0{\sim}9.5$ in the weak alkaline state. This effect can prevent liberation of $H_2O$. The addition of gypsum into the sediment can reduce the progress of methanogenesis because of fast early diagenesis and sufficient supply of $SO_4^{2-}$ to the sediments, stimulate the SRB highly. Therefore, the application of Brucite and Gypsum can reduce phosphorus release from the sediment as a result of formation of $Mg_5(OH)(PO_4)_3$, pyrite($FeS_x$), and apatite-mineral.
This study was conducted to reclassify Anryong series based on the second edition of Soil Taxonomy and to discuss the formation of Anryong series distributed on the mountain foot slope. Morphological properties of typifying pedon of Anryong series were investigated and physico-chemical properties were analyzed according to Soil survey laboratory methods manual. The typifying pedon of Anryong series has brown (7.5YR 4/4) loam Ap horizon (0-22 cm), strong brown (7.5YR 4/6) cobbly clay loam BAt horizon (22-35 cm), strong brown (7.5YR 4/6) cobbly clay loam Bt1 horizon (35-55 cm), reddish brown (5YR 5/4) cobbly clay loam Bt2 horizon (55-82 cm), and brown (7.5YR 5/4) cobbly clay loam Bt3 horizon (82-120 cm). The typifying pedon has an argillic horizon from a depth of 22 to 120 cm and a base saturation (sum of cations) of less than 35% at 125 cm below the upper boundary of the argillic horizon. It can be classified as Ultisol, not as Alfisol. It has udic soil moisture regime, and can be classified as Udult. Also that meets the requirements of Typic Hapludults. It has 18-35% clay at the particle-size control section, and have mesic soil temperature regime. Therefore Anryong series can be classified as fine loamy, mesic family of Typic Hapludults, not as fine loamy, mesic family of Ultic Hapludalfs. Anryong series occur on mountain foot slope positions in colluvial materials derived from acid and intermediate crystalline rocks. They are developed as Ultisols with clay mineral weathering, translocation of clays to accumulate in an argillic horizon, and leaching of base-forming cations from the profile for relatively long periods under humid and temperate climates in Korea.
This study was conducted to reclassify Cheongpung series based on the second edition of Soil Taxonomy, and to dicuss the formation of Cheongpung series distributed on the diluvial terrace. Morphological properties of typifying pedon of Cheongpung series were investigated, and physico-chemical properties were analyzed according to Soil survey laboratory methods manual. The typifying pedon of Cheongpung series has red (2.5YR 4/6) silty clay loam Ap horizon (0-18 cm), red (2.5YR 4/8) clay BAt horizon (18-35 cm), red (2.5YR 4/2) cobbly clay Bt1 horizon (35-65 cm), and red (2.5YR4/6) cobbly clay Bt2 horizon (more than 65 cm). The typifying pedon has an argillic horizon from adepth of 18 to more than 65 cm, and a base saturation (sum of cations) of less than 35% at 125 cm below the upper boundary of the argillic horizon. It can be classified as Ultisol, not as Alfisol. It has udic soil moisture regime, and can be classified as Udult. Also that meets the requirements of Typic Hapludults. It has 35% or more clay at the particle-size control section, and have mesic soil temperature regime. Therefore Cheongpung series can be classified as fine, mesic family of Typic Hapludults, not as fine, mesic family of Ultic Hapludalfs. Cheongpung series occur on moderately elevated diluvial terrace which have relatively stable geomorphic surface. They are developed as Ultisols with clay mineral weathering, translocation of clays to accumulate in an argillic horizon, and leaching of base-forming cations from the profile for relatively long periods under humid, and temperate climates in Korea.
This study was conducted to reclassify Asan series based on the second edition of Soil Taxonomy and to discuss the formation of Asan series distributed on the rolling to hilly areas. Morphological properties of typifying pedon of Asan series were investigated and physico-chemical properties were analyzed according to Soil survey laboratory methods manual. The typifying pedon of Asan series has dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4) gravelly loam Ap horizon (0-18 cm), strong brown (7.5YR 5/6) gravelly clay loam BA horizon (18-30 cm), red (2.5YR 4/6) gravelly clay loam Bt1 horizon (30-52 cm), red (2.5YR 4/8) gravelly clay loam Bt2 horizon (52-98 cm), and red (2.5YR 4/8) gravelly clay loam C horizon (98-160 cm). The typifying pedon has an argillic horizon from a depth of 30 to 98 cm and a base saturation (sum of cations) of less than 35% at 125 cm below the upper boundary of the argillic horizon. It can be classified as Ultisol, not as Inceptisol. It has udic soil moisture regime, and can be classified as Udult. Also that meets the requirements of Typic Hapludults. It has 18-35% clay at the particle-size control section, and has mesic soil temperature regime. Therefore Asan series can be classified as fine loamy, mesic family of Typic Hapludults, not as fine loamy, mesic family of Typic Dystrudepts. Asan series occur on rolling to hilly areas in residual materials derived from granite gneiss, schist, and gneiss rocks. They are developed as Ultisols with clay mineral weathering, translocation of clays to accumulate in an argillic horizon, and leaching of base-forming cations from the profile for relatively long periods under humid and temperate climates in Korea.
