  • In this paper, a simple first-order shear deformation theory is presented for dynamic behavior of functionally graded beams. Unlike the existing first-order shear deformation theory, the present one contains only three unknowns and has strong similarities with the classical beam theory in many aspects such as equations of motion, boundary conditions, and stress resultant expressions. Equations of motion and boundary conditions are derived from Hamilton's principle. Analytical solutions of simply supported FG beam are obtained and the results are compared with Euler-Bernoulli beam and the other shear deformation beam theory results. Comparison studies show that this new first-order shear deformation theory can achieve the same accuracy of the existing first-order shear deformation theory.

  • The estimations of distributed and joint-excited input power for Power Flow Analysis are accomplished in this paper. Using Fourier transform, the displacements of infinite structures are derived, and the input power of distributed excitation can be estimated. The obtained results compare the real input power with the estimation of input power. When the exciting force acts on the joint of coupled structures, it is estimating the power that is transferred to each structure. Appling this input power, the results of energy density and intensity of Power Flow Analysis can be compared with the classical solutions.

  • In some previous papers the author extended two algorithms proposed by Z. Kovarik for approximate orthogonalization of a finite set of linearly independent vectors from a Hibert space, to the case when the vectors are rows (not necessary linearly independent) of an arbitrary rectangular matrix. In this paper we describe combinations between these two methods and the classical Kaczmarz’s iteration. We prove that, in the case of a consistent least-squares problem, the new algorithms so obtained converge ti any of its solutions (depending on the initial approximation). The numerical experiments described in the last section of the paper on a problem obtained after the discretization of a first kind integral equation ilustrate the fast convergence of the new algorithms. • Power Flow Analysis (PFA) is developed for the effective predictions of frequency-averaged vibrational response in medium-to-high frequency ranges. In PFA, the power coefficients of semi-infinite structure and for-field energy density are used to predict the vibrational responses of structures. Generally, at high frequencies, PFA can predict narrow-band frequency-averaged vibrational responses of built-up structures. However, in low- to medium frequency ranges, the dynamic responses obtained by PFA represent broad-band frequency-averaged vibrational energy densities. For the prediction of vibrational response variance in Power Flow Finite Element Method (PFFEM), the variances of input power and joint element matrix describing structural coupling relationship are derived. Finally, for the validity of developed formulation, numerical examples for two co-planer plates are performed and the vibrational response variance of the structure are compared with the results of classical and PFFEM solutions.

  • An accurate method is presented for flexural vibrations of sectorial plates having simply supported-free and free-free radial edges, when the circular edge is either clamped or simply supported. The classical Ritz method is employed with two sets of admissible functions assumed for the transverse vibratory displacements. These sets consist of : (1) mathematically complete algebraic-trigonometric polynomials which gurantee convergence to exact frequencies as sufficient terms are retained, and (2) comer functions which account for the bending moment singularities at re-entrant comer of the radial edges having arbitrary edge conditions. Accurate (at least four significant figures) frequencies and normalized contours of the transverse vibratory displacement are presented for the spectra of corner angles [90$^{\circ}$, 180$^{\circ}$(semi-circular), 270$^{\circ}$, 300$^{\circ}$, 330$^{\circ}$, 350$^{\circ}$, 355$^{\circ}$, 360$^{\circ}$ (complete circular)] causing a re-entrant comer of the radial edges. Future solutions drawn from alternative numerical procedures and finite element techniques may be compared with these accurate results.

  • In this paper, we study the existence of classical and generalized solutions for nonlinear differential inclusions $x^{\prime}(t){\in}F(t,x(t))$ in Hilbert spaces in which the multifunction F on the right-hand side is hemicontinuous and satisfies the semimonotone condition or is condensing. Our existence results are obtained via the selection and fixed point methods by reducing the problem to an ordinary differential equation. We first prove the existence theorem in finite dimensional spaces and then we generalize the results to the infinite dimensional separable Hilbert spaces. Then we apply the results to prove the existence of the mild solution for semilinear evolution inclusions. At last, we give an example to illustrate the results obtained in the paper.

  • The classical vehicle routing problem (VRP) can be extended by including customers who want to send goods to the depot. This type of VRP is called the vehicle routing problem with pickups and deliveries (VRPPD). This study proposes a novel way to solve VRPPD by introducing a two-phase heuristic routing algorithm which consists of a clustering phase and uses the geometrical center of a cluster and route establishment phase by applying a two-way search of each route after applying the TSP algorithm on each route. Experimental results show that the suggested algorithm can generate better initial solutions for more computer-intensive meta-heuristics than other existing methods such as the giant-tour-based partitioning method or the insertion-based method.

  • This paper presents a new integer formulation (Type III ALB) for a single model assembly line balancing problem. The objective of the formulation is to minimize the total idle time, which is defined as the product of the number of work stations and the cycle times minus the total work content. This formulation considers currently existing Type I (minimizing the number of work stations for a given cycle time) and type II (minimizing the cycle time for a given number of work stations) formulations as its special cases and provides the global minimum solutions of the cycle time and the number of work stations. This information would be of great value to line designers involved in designing new assembly lines and rebalancing old lines under flexible conditions. Solution methods based on combination of Type I and Type II approaches are also suggested and compared.

  • The hierarchical covering location problem emphasizes the issue of locating of hierarchical facilities in order to maximize the number of customers that can be covered. In the classical HCLP(Hierarchical Covering Location Problem), it is assumed that the customers are covered completely if they are located within a specific distance from the facility, and not covered otherwise. The generalized HCLP is introduced that the coverage of customers is measured to be any real value rather than 0 or 1, where the service level may decrease according to the distance. Mixed integer programming formulation for the generalized HCLP is suggested with a partial coverage of service. Solutions are found using OPL Studio, and are evaluated for various cases.

  • This work is concerned with the investigation of end effects of a cylinder on a structure where a circular plate is attached to a solid circular cylinder. Three-dimensional elasticity solutions are used in a cylinder whereas the classical thin plate theory is employed for a plate. The end effect of the cylinder on the flexibility and the structural response is demonstrated by several numerical examples.
