  • The nonlinear effects on the statistical properties of wave groups in terms of the average nomber of waves in a group and the mean number of waves in a high run is studied in this paper utilizing the complex envelope and total phase function, random variable transformation technique and perturbation method. It tures out that the phase distribution is modified significantly by nonlinearities and it show systematic excess of values near the mean phase and the corresponding symmetrical deficiency on both sides away from the mean. for the case of threshold crossing rate, it turns out that threshold crossing rate reaches its maxima just below the mean water level rather than zero and considerable amount of probability mass is shifted toward the larger values of water surface elevation as nonlinearity is getting profound. Furthermore, the mean waves in a high run associated with nonlinear wave are shown to have larger values than the linear counterpart. Similar trend can also be found in the average number of waves in a group.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the catchment area of child care centers, which are becoming increasingly important due to social changes such as nuclear family and women's participation in society. In this study, we surveyed 2,174 children in 32 municipal child care centers in Suwon city. As a result, most of infants(0~2years old) were coming to daycare facilities by cars, and its catchment area for 90%ile were about 3km. Next, the catchment area of the children who walk to child care centers is about 500m. When using the car, the catchment area was 1.3km. This study provides the following suggestions. Considering the infant car use area, it is necessary to install more than one child care center per living area. In particular, there is a need to urgently expand daycare centers that provide child care services for infant care. Next, a nursing center-based pedestrian environment improvement project is needed.

  • Advanced Phase Isolation Ditch (APID) process was studied to develop economic retrofitting technology, for the plants where retrofitting of common activated sludge process is required. In this study, to evaluate and monitor the effluent water quality ($BOD_5$, SS, T-N, and T-P) and operating conditions (Influent, SVI, SRT, and HRT) as process capable and stable parameters for treating municipal wastewater, a demonstration plant was installed and operated in the existing sewage treatment plant of P city. During this study, the average effluent $BOD_5$, SS, T-N, and T-P concentrations were 7.7, 5.6, 10.8, and 1.6 mg/L. Trend analysis of influent $BOD_5$, SS, T-N, and T-P in APID process were illustrated that APID process need for more strong APID process management on the winter session, such as developing new intermediated aeration mode, operating methods, and managements strategy. At the application of control chart, the signal of uncommon effects at APID process was determined much higher existing control chart tntr conventional control chart in this study. These results indicate that conventional control chart has been collected and determined cleary signal at only stable situation. Therefore, newly developed APID process of dynamic control chart can be one of the useful tool for monitoring and management process.

  • In this paper, the performance characteristics of heat pump system using a new refrigerant subcooling system designed for the study, are introduced. The new heat pump system have the ice storage tank at the outlet of condenser. The experimental apparatus is a well-instrumented water/water heat pump which consisted of working fluid loop, coolant loop, and ice storage tank. The experiment parameters of subcooling ranged as the evaporating temperature from $-5^{\circ}C$ to $8^{\circ}C$, the condensing temperature from $30^{\circ}C$ to $35^{\circ}C$. The test of the ice storage was carried out at evaporating temperature of $-10^{\circ}C$ and the ice storage mode is Ice-On-Coil type. The working fluid was R-22 and the storage materials were city-water. The test results obtained were as follows; The refrigerant mass flow rate and compressor shaft power were unchanged by the degrees of subcooling, that is, they were independent of degrees of subcooling. The cooling capacity of the new heat pump system increase as the evaporating temperature and subcooling degrees increase and is higher by $25{\sim}30%$, compared to the normal heat pump system. The COP of the new heat pump system increases as the degrees of subcooling and evaporating temperature increase and is higher by 28% than that of the normal heat pump system.

  • The local governments of major cities in Korea are giving focus on public transportation to reduce congestion and improve accessibility in city areas. In this regards, the proper measurement of accessibility is now a key policy requirement for reorganizing the public transport network. Public transport routing problems, however, are considered to be highly complicated since a multi-mode travel generates different combinations of accessibility. While most of the previous research efforts on measuring transport accessibility are found at zone-levels, an alternative approach at a finer scale such as bus links and stops is presented in this study. We proposes a method to compute the optimal route choice of origin-destination pairs and measure the accessibility of the chosen modes combination based on topological configuration. The genetic algorithm is used for the computation of the journey paths, whereas the space syntax theory is used for the accessibility. This study used node-link data in GIS instead of axial lines which are manually drawn in space syntax. The resulting accessibilities of bus stops are calibrated by O-D survey data and the proposed process is tested on a CBD of Seoul.

  • Among the factors of living environment, the one that is the most closely related with our living is the building. It is one of the biggest reasons for energy consumption as it forms 36% of the total energy consumption. Technologies equipped with excellent energy performance can hardly be applied to rural areas that are relatively poorer. Still, 89.8% rural residents are living in detached houses, and backward houses increase their financial burden and result in reduced insulation performance. Accordingly, this study is going to review the latest research written after 2000 dealing with rural houses and their insulation. The purpose of this study is to analyze the factors of insulation and how to improve insulation performance, conduct field research to find out how to apply low energy technologies applicable to houses with the subjects of experimental houses, the passive houses located in Jecheon City, Hongcheon Saldun zero energy houses, and energy independence villages, and find out how to perform follow-up research on insulation for rural houses. According to the findings, the latest research on insulation for rural houses is mostly focused on walls as well as windows and doors. Also, as ways to improve insulation performance, it suggests us to use high performance insulators, introduce new regeneration energy technology, and secure hermeticity. In addition, through field research, this author could find out low energy technologies applicable to houses such as solar energy facilities and heat recovery systems. Advanced research on insulation for rural houses has been focused on how to use materials or new regeneration energy, so follow-up research will have to consider the types of farming area or the residents' mode of living.

  • In Seoul, the subway system has been in use since 1974 and is the most frequently used travel mode accounting for approximately 40% of passenger journeys in 2015. As such the subway system is widely adopted by people and therefore, can have great impacts on their everyday life. However, it is easily noted that transit resources are not distributed spatially uniform, in other words, not all parts of the city gain the same benefits from their networks. This study aims to examine the inequity of spatial distribution of subway networks based on accessibility. Accessibility of subway networks are calculated based on the time-distance between stations and then equity is measured using the Gini index. Resulted map of subway accessibility shows that the benefits are not evenly distributed in Seoul with a pattern of highly accessible core - less accessible periphery areas. Also the subway accessibility network has fairer distribution against the employees' distribution rather than the distribution of general population or possibly transit dependent groups.

  • During a twenty-day period in 2005, a nine-stage Andersen cascade impactor was used to determine the seasonal size distribution of atmospheric particles and its inorganic ion species sampled for 24hr in Iksan city, located southwest of the Korean peninsula. Samples were analyzed for major water-soluble ion species using Dionex-100 ion chromatograph. Average fine and coarse mass concentrations of atmospheric particles were, respectively, 31.4 and $82.6{\mu}g\;m^{-3}$ in spring and 35.8 and $73.4{\mu}g\;m^{-3}$ in fall-winter during the sampling period of 2005, while measurements of 69.8 and 9.9 were obtained in the sampling period of summer, The size distribution of particulate mass concentration during the non-Asian dust period was generally bimodal, whereas the size distribution of particulate mass concentration during the Asian dust period was unimodal due to the significant increase of coarse particles, which originated from long-range transport of soil dust particles from loess regions of the Asian continent. Among ionic species, $SO{_4}^{2-},\;NH{_4}^+,\;K^+$ were mainly distributed in fine particles due to their characteristics of emission sources and gas-to-particle conversion, while $Na^+,\;Mg^{2+}\;and\;Ca^{2+}$ were dominantly in coarse particles. However, $NO_3{^-}\;and\;Cl^-$ were distributed in both coarse particles and fine particles. Although $SO{_4}^{2-}$ was mainly distributed in fine particles, the size distributions of $SO{_4}^{2-}$ in coarse mode were significantly increased during the Asian dust events compared to those during the non-Asian dust period. $Ca^{2+}$ showed the most abundant species in the atmospheric particles during the Asian dust period. $NH{_4}^+$ was found to mainly exist as $(NH_4)_2SO_4$ in fine particles.
