  • A circular cylinder is oscillated in th otherwise quiescent viscous fluid. Numerical analysis performed for this problem by using the fourth-order Runge-kutta method for the unsteady Navier-stokes equations. For K(Kelegan-Carpenter's No.)=5, the flow developed symmetrically, while for K=10, it revealed random patterns. The coefficient of the rms force is overestimated by 20-30% compared with the experimental result.

  • The concept of the natural frequency is useful for understanding the characters of oscillating systems. However, when a circular cylinder floating horizontally on the water surface is heaving, due to the hydrodynamic forces, the system is not governed by the equation like that of the harmonic one. In this paper, in order to shed some lights on the more correct use of the concept of the natural frequency, a problem of the heaving circular cylinder is analyzed in the frequency domain. Previously, it was thought that the theory of Ursell (1949) could not be used to get the added mass and wave-making damping for short waves, however, they were obtained by applying an accurate collocation method to the theory in this study. Using the so developed numerical method, we found the added mass and wave-making damping of the circular cylinder for the entire range of the frequency. Then, the MCFR(Modulus of Complex Frequency Response) was used to locate the frequency corresponding to the local maximum of MCFR and we define it as the natural frequency. Comparing our results with the previous investigation, we found that the pressure distribution on the cylinder gets close asymptotically to that of a cylinder in infinite fluid OR close to that of the cylinder, that the approximation of the natural frequency by Lee (2008) is different from our new value only by 0.64%, and that the approximation of the heaving system by an equivalent damped harmonic oscillation is not proper by the reason that is clearly shown from the comparison of the shape of the corresponding MCFRs.

  • In this paper, we try to prepare an accurate analytical solution for solving nonlinear vibration of thin circular sector cylinder. A new approximate solution called variational approach is presented and correctly applied to the governing equation of thin circular sector cylinder. The effect of important parameters on the response of the problem is considered. Some comparisons have been presented between the numerical solution and the present approach. The results show an excellent agreement between these methods. It has been illustrated that the variational approach can be a useful method to solve nonlinear problems by considering the effects of important parameters.

  • A Computational study was carried out in order to investigate the moving wall effect of a circular cylinder at a Reynolds number of $2.0{\times}10^4$. The viscous-incompressible Navier-Stokes equations and Spalart-Almaras turbulent model of the commercial CFD code were adopted for this numerical analysis. The moving wall was set parallel with the freestream, and moving speed was equal to the freestream velocity. The gap ratio is defined as the distance ratio between the circular cylinder diameter and the height from the moving wall. The results show that there is vortex shedding over the critical gap ratio and aerodynamic loads including amplitude and the Strouhal number change according to the gap ratio.

  • To investigate the vortex induced vibrations the 2-d.o.f. spring mounted circular cylinder was tested in the wind tunnel. The circular cylinder was designed to have the translational and the rotational mode uncoupled to each other. During the wind tunnel tests the resonance behaviors of the translational and the rotational modes by the locking-on phenomena were observed. From the locking-on phenomena observed it is shown that the vortex shedding is correlated with the responses of the structures. And the forces generated by the vortex shedding are influenced by the amplitudes and the frequencies of the cylinders.

  • Thermophoretic particle deposition on a circular cylinder in a uniform laminar air flow was numerically investigated using a control volume method based on the generalized non-orthogonal coordinate system. Variation of air properties due to the change of temperature was taken into account. Effects of variable property on the distribution of heat transfer and deposition rates of particle were discussed. A new correlation of thermophoretic particle deposition on a circular cylinder was proposed in the present study.

  • A Green's function approach based on the laminate theory is adopted to obtain the unsteady temperature distributions in a semi-infinite hollow circular cylinder made of functionally graded materials (FGMs). The transient heat conduction equation based on the laminate theory is formulated into an eigenvalue problem for each layer by using the eigenfunction expansion theory and the separation of variables. The eigenvalues and the corresponding eigenfunctions obtained by solving an eigenvalue problem for each layer constitute the Green's function solution for analyzing the unsteady temperature distributions. Numerical calculations are carried out for the semi-infinite hollow circular FGM cylinder subjected to partially heated loads, and the numerical results are shown in figures.

  • Many researches were carried out to estimate heat transfer rate on a circular cylinder in a uniform flow. Various empirical correlations were suggested in the past through experimental studies, however there are considerable discrepancies in the estimated values of heat transfer coefficient. The effect of fluid physical properties on the forced convective heat transfer between a circular cylinder and the external flow was numerically investigated in the present study, The flow and temperature fields were solved using a Finite Volume Method over a wider range of Prandtl number(0.7-40,000) than existing correlations. The cold as well as the hot cylinders in the uniform liquid flow of constant temperature were investigated. A unified correlation was obtainde for both cases.

  • Acoustic sounds generated by uniform flow around a two-dimensional circular cylinder at Re=150 are simulated by applying the finite difference lattice Boltzmann method. A third-order-accurate up-wind scheme is used for the spatial derivatives. A second-order-accurate Runge-Kutta scheme is also used for time marching. Very small acoustic pressure fluctuation, with same frequency as that of Karman vortex street, is compared with pressure fluctuation around a circular cylinder. The propagation velocity of acoustic sound shows that acoustic approaching the upstream, due to the Doppler effect in uniform flow, slowly propagates. For the downstream, on the other hand, it quickly propagates. It is also apparent that the size of sound pressure is proportional to the central distance ${\gamma}$$\^$-1/2/ of the circular cylinder.
