  • Dependence of the critical micelle concentration (CMC) on temperature is examined from a statistical-mechanical point of view. A simple and primitive model examined in this article yields ln CMC= A+BT+C/T+D ln T with T being temperature and A, B, C, D being constants depending on the properties of the surfactant molecules which comprise the micelles. The resulting equation combines Muller's and Lim's equations, which have already been proven to fit well measured CMC data with temperature. The statistical-mechanical model on micellization discussed in this article provides a theoretical basis on these equations.

  • We propose a doubly robustified estimating function for the estimation of parameters in the context of ARCH models. We investigate asymptotic properties of estimators obtained as solutions of robust estimating equations. A simulation study shows that robust estimator from specified doubly robustified estimating equation provides better performance than conventional robust estimators especially under heavy-tailed distributions of innovation errors.

  • There are various aspects of the solution of boundary-value problems for second-order linear elliptic equations in two independent variables. One useful method of solving such boundary-value problems for Laplace's equation is by means of suitable integral representations of solutions and these representations are obtained most directly in terms of particular singular solutions, termed Green's functions.(omitted)

  • For the last two decades, many researchers have interests in orthogonal functions by reason of its applicability on linear system analysis. But they only used integral operation matrix of orthogonal functions to solve the state space equations. Thus, this paper present some new result of differential operation of block-pulse functions from a numerical point of view.

  • In this study, vibrations of an electric motor are analyzed when the motor has the interaction between mechanical and electromagnetic behaviors. For this vibration analysis a 3-phase 8-pole brushless DC motor is selected. Vibrations of the motor are influenced by coupled electromechanical characteristics. The variation of air-gap induced by vibration has an influence on the inductance of the motor coil. To analyze dynamic characteristics of the rotor, we studied inductance by the variation of an air-gap. After obtaining the kinetic, potential and magnetic energies for the motor, the equations of motion are derived by using Lagrange's equation. By applying the Newmark time integration method to the equations, the dynamic responses for the displacements and currents are computed.

  • A numerical computation of turbulent wirling flow in a stationary pipe is presented in this work. Major concerns of this study are: 1) To approve similarity laws which were verified experimentally. 2) To investigate the effects of curvature modification for the K- .epsilon. model. To account for effects of swirl, Rodi's curvature correction and Kim & Chung's are applied. The governing differential equations for eliptic flow are discretized by control volume formulation method, and the discretized equations are calculated ay line by line TDMA and SIMPLE algorithm. The computational results also satisfy similarity laws which are based on swirl angle as in experiments. And the curvature modification of Rodi improves compuational accuacy than the standard K- .epsilon. model. But such lower order closure models are not adequate for the prediction of this complex flow.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze nonlinear dynamics of a tethered satellite. The nonlinear equations of motion are derived by using Lagrange's equations with the polar coordinate system. In order to analyze the response of tethered satellite, time responses are computed by the Newmark's time integration method. This paper claims that the dynamic behavior of the system is changed by the effect of length of tether, mass ratio of satellites.

  • As a part of numerical and experimental research works for the prediction and improvement of ship's maneuvering performance, a study on the performance analysis of two different rudders has been carried out. While the planform shape and the aspect ratio of the rudders have been fixed, section shape has been changed. Conventional type of HMRI NP section and special type of dolphin-tail section have been employed. Performances of the rudders have been investigated by using CFD and compared with experimental data obtained in a wind tunnel. A commercial CFD program has been used to solve the RANS equations. Two-equation k-ro model has been applied to close the governing equations. Block-structured grids are used in the numerical calculation. Based upon the calculation results, the rudder with dolphin-tail section has shown a possibility of significantly improving rudder performance if utilized as the section of ship rudders.

  • We predict the unknown cannon tube erosion rate by using observed values of the standard cannon, 155mm Howitzer Ml85. We know the standard cannon's ten erosion observation values each 400 rounds. An approximate formula fitting the erosion values of the standard cannon has been derived. Numerical simulation applying this formula to the Rauf Imam's erosion equations is presented.

  • Data with collected from 278 trees sampled through out the climatic range of Quercus acuta in Jeju Experiment Forests. The models tested to select the best-fit equations form the Max & Burkhart's model, Kozak's model, and Lee's model. Performance of the equations in predicting of residuals on predicted values. In result, all three models gave slightly better values of fit statistics. In plotting residuals against predicted diameter, Max & Burkhart's model showed underestimation in predicting small diameter and Lee's Model did the same in predicting small diameter. Based on the above analysis of three models in predicting stem taper, Kozak's model was chosen for the best-fit stem taper equations, and its parameter estimates was given for Quercus acuta. Kozak's model was used to develop a stem volume table outside bark for Quercus acuta.
