Cryptand resins have been synthesized from 1-aza-18-crown-6 macrocyclic ligand attached to styrene (2th petroleum in 4th class hazardous materials) divinylbenzene copolymer with crosslinkage of 1%, 2%, 10%, and 18% by substitution reaction. The synthesis of these resins was confirmed by the content of chlorine, element analysis, surface area (BET), and IR-spectroscopy. The effects of pH, time and crosslinkage on adsorption of metal ion from water fire extinguishing agentby synthetic resin adsorbent were investigated. Metal ions showed a great adsorption over pH 3 and adsorption equilibriumof metal ions was about two hours. The adsorption selectivity determined in water was in the increasing order of sodium ($Na^{1+}$) > zinc ($Zn^{2+}$) > chromium ($Cr^{3+}$) ion. The adsorption was in the order of 1%, 2%, 10%, and 18% crosslinkage resin.
The adsorption of Cr(VI) from aqueous solutions to activated carbon fiber (ACF) was investigated using both batch and flow-through column experiments. The batch experiments (adsorbent dose, 10 g/L; initial Cr(VI) concentration, 5-500 mg/L) showed that the maximum adsorption capacity of Cr(VI) to ACF was determined to 20.54 mg/g. The adsorption of Cr(VI) to ACF was sensitive to solution pH, decreasing from 9.09 to 0.66 mg/g with increasing pH from 2.6 to 9.9; the adsorption capacity was the highest at the highly acidic solution pHs. Kinetic model analysis showed that the Elovich model was the most suitable for describing the kinetic data among three (pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, and Elovich) models. From the nonlinear regression analysis, the Elovich model parameter values were determined to be ${\alpha}$ = 162.65 mg/g/h and ${\beta}$ = 2.10 g/mg. Equilibrium isotherm model analysis demonstrated that among three (Langmuir, Freundlich, Redlich-Peterson) models, both Freundlich and Redlich-Peterson models were suitable for describing the equilibrium data. In the model analysis, the Redlich-Peterson model fit was superimposed on the Freundlich fit. The Freundlich model parameter values were determined to be $K_F$ = 0.52 L/g and 1/n = 0.56. The flow-through column experiments showed that the adsorption capacities of ACF in the given experimental conditions (column length, 10 cm; inner diameter, 1.5 cm; flow rate, 0.5 and 1.0 mL/min; influent Cr(VI) concentration, 10 mg/L) were in the range of 2.35-4.20 mg/g. This study demonstrated that activated carbon fiber was effective for the removal of Cr(VI) from aqueous solutions.
Three dimensional self-assembled graphene hydrogels were easily fabricated by electron beam irradiation (EBI) using an aqueous solution of wool/poly(vinyl alcohol) and graphene oxide (GO). After exposure to various levels of EBI radiation, the highly porous, self-assembled, wool-based graphene hydrogels were characterized using scanning electron microscopy and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy; to determine the gel fraction, degree of swelling, gel strength, kinetics-of-swelling analyses and removal of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) from the aqueous solution. X-ray diffraction results confirmed that EBI played a significantly important role in reducing GO to graphene. The adsorption equilibrium of Cr(VI) was reached within 80 min and the adsorption capacity was dramatically increased as the acidity of the initial solution was decreased from pH 5 to 2. Changes in ionic strength did not exert much effect on the adsorption behavior.
Adsorption properties of heavy metals and organics in the mixed packed column of scoria and activated carbon, as well as physicochemical properties and functional groups of scoria were investigated. As the mixing ratio of scoria increased, the average removal ratios of cadmium, nickel, chromium, and lead ions increased, but that of benzene and toluene decreased. The mixed packed column of scoria and activated carbon could be effectively used for the simultaneous removal of heavy metals and organics. Scoria has Si-H and Si-O functional groups, and it was confirmed that Si-O functional groups greatly contributed to the adsorption of heavy metals.
The complete catalytic oxidation of vinyl chloride was investigated over chromium oxide supported ${\gamma}$-alumina using a fixed bed micro-reactor at temperature between 240 and $300^{\circ}C$ and concentration between 600 and 3500 ppm. The oxidation of vinyl chloride was nonlinear in the concentration of vinyl chloride and zeroth order in the concentration of oxygen. The addition of HCl and $H_2O$ as products to the feed stream didn't influence the conversion of vinyl chloride. Several kinetic rate model were tested to describe the data over the range of condition investigated, and developed a model which provide the best correlation of experimental data. The resulting model of kinetic rate was derived by assuming that the reacting occurred via adsorption and subsequent decomposition of the vinyl chloride onto the oxygen covered chromium oxide surface, with the reaction being inhibited by the adsorption of vinyl chloride. The percent standard deviation between the predicted and experimental was about 5.2%, and the activation energy was 18.9 kcal/mol.

In this study, phenol-based activated carbons (ACs) were fluorinated at various fluorine partial pressures (0.01~0.03 MPa) and the $Cr^{6+}$ ion adsorption of fluorinated ACs was investigated. According to BET and XPS results, the specific surface area and total pore volume of fluorinated ACs increased by 24.7 and 55.8%, respectively, and fluorine functional groups were introduced to AC surface. The most optimized condition of $Cr^{6+}$ ion adsorption was confirmed at the fluorine partial pressure of 0.02 MPa. And also the removal efficiency of $Cr^{6+}$ ion was up to 98% at 300 mg/L of the initial concentration, and these results showed an approximately three-fold increase compared to that of using untreated ACs. Furthermore, the $Cr^{6+}$ ion adsorption of fluorinated ACs was completed in less than 30 min in contrast with untreated ACs, which was expected to be an increase of the affinity between $Cr^{6+}$ ions and ACs surfaces by fluorination.
An alternative method to remove and recover heavy metals is biosorption based on metal-sequestering properties of natural or biological origin. In this study, the effects of factors such as temperature, pH, initial concentration of lead, and initial amount of biomass on biosorption of lead using Aureobasdium pullulans were investigated. A. pullulans has an excellent selectivity to remove lead than other heavy metals such as cadmium, chromium, nickel in pure and mixed solution. The optimum temperature of biosorption with A. pullulans was $40^{\circ}C$ and the amount of removal increased at high pH. The higher initial lead concentration or the lower cell dry weight, the higher amount of lead was adsorbed. The adsorption isotherm of lead was accorded with Freundlich model. The adsorption capacity and initial adsorption rate of living A. pullulans were about twice higher than that of dead one.
The effects of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) of Pseudomonas aeruginosa on adsorption and redox state alteration of dissolved As, Cr and U were investigated through batch experiments. Surfaces of bacterial cells were either vigorously washed or unwashed. Solutions of As(V), Cr(VI) and U(VI) were inoculated with the bacterial cells under no nutrient condition, and total aqueous concentrations and redox state alteration were monitored over time. No As adsorption occurred onto bacteria or EPS; however, unwashed bacteria reduced about 60% As(V) to As(III). Unwashed bacteria also led to removal of 45% total dissolved Cr and reduction of 64% Cr(VI). About 80% U(VI) was removed from solution with unwashed bacteria as well. Such electrochemical reduction of the elements was likely due to reducing capacity of EPS itself or detoxifying reduction of the bacteria which kept their viability under protection of EPS. The results indicated that bacterial biofilm may significantly control the redox state and subsequent mobility of As, Cr and U in natural geologic settings.

Ion exchange fiber, PADD was synthesized by the reaction between PAN based acrylic fiber and DETA with $AlCl_3{\cdot}6H_2O$, and was analyzed by FT-IR and SEM to investigate its characteristics. The experimental results of Cr(VI) removal by PADD were better fitted with Langmuir adsorption isotherm, and the maximum uptake value ($Q_{max}$) was calculated to be 6.93 mmol/g. The kinetic data can be well described by Lagergen pseudo-second order rate model. The Cr(VI) adsorption capacity of PADD was 4.11 mmol/g at pH 2, which shows the effect of pH changes on the removal of Cr(VI). The adsorption selectivity of Cr(VI) was higher than phosphate and As(V). Total ion exchange capacity of PADD was 4.70 mmol/g, which was measured by acid-base back titration.

Present study investigates the potential of cassava peel and rubber tree bark for the removal of Cr (VI) from aqueous solution. Removal efficiency of more than 99% was obtained during the kinetic adsorption experiments with dosage of 3.5 g/L for cassava peel and 8 g/L for rubber tree bark. By comparing popular isotherm models and kinetic models for evaluating the kinetics of mass transfer, it was observed that Redlich-Peterson model and Langmuir model fitted well ($R^2$ > 0.99) resulting in maximum adsorption capacity as 79.37 mg/g and 43.86 mg/g for cassava peel and rubber tree bark respectively. Validation of pseudo-second order model and Elovich model indicated the possibility of chemisorption being the rate limiting step. The multi-linearity in the diffusion model was further addressed using multi-sites models (two-site series interface (TSSI) and two-site parallel interface (TSPI) models). Considering the influence of interface properties on the kinetic nature of sorption, TSSI model resulted in low mass transfer rate (5% for cassava peel and 10% for rubber tree bark) compared to TSPI model. The study highlights the employability of two-site sorption model for simultaneous representation of different stages of kinetic sorption for finding the rate-limiting process, compared to the separate equilibrium and kinetic modeling attempts.
