Activated carbon (AC) was synthesized from Phoenix dactylifera stones and then modified by $CoFe_2O_4$ magnetic nanocomposite for use as a Cr(VI) adsorbent. Both $AC/CoFe_2O_4$ composite and AC were fully characterized by FTIR, SEM, XRD, TEM, TGA, and VSM techniques. Based on the surface analyses, the addition of $CoFe_2O_4$ nanoparticles had a significant effect on the thermal stability and crystalline structure of AC. Factors affecting chromium removal efficiency like pH, dosage, contact time, temperature, and initial Cr(VI) concentration were investigated. The best pH was found 2 and 3 for Cr adsorption by AC and $AC/CoFe_2O_4$ composite, respectively. The presence of ion sulfate had a greater effect on the chromium sorption efficiency than nitrate and chlorine ions. The results illustrated that both adsorbents can be used up to seven times to adsorb chromium. The adsorption process was examined by three isothermal models, and Freundlich was chosen as the best one. The experimental data were well fitted by pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The half-life ($t_{1/2}$) of hexavalent chromium using AC and $AC/CoFe_2O_4$ magnetic composite was obtained as 5.18 min and 1.52 min, respectively. Cr(VI) adsorption by AC and $AC/CoFe_2O_4$ magnetic composite was spontaneous and exothermic. In general, our study showed that the composition of $CoFe_2O_4$ magnetic nanoparticles with AC can increase the adsorption capacity of AC from 36 mg/L to 70 mg/L.

This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of pH control and ozonation, coagulation on trihalomethanes (THMs) formation during prechlorination of the Nakdong river water. The results showed that lower pH was reduced THMs formation during prechlorination. THMs formation of water lowered pH 9.5 to 9.0, was reduced 18.3% and lowered pH 9.0 to 8.0 was reduced 14%, lowered pH 8.0 to 7.0 was reduced 7%, lowered pH 9.5 to 8.0 was reduced 29%. A low ozone dose ($0.11{\sim}0.48mg{\cdot}O_3/DOC$) before chlorination reduced the yields of THMs (reduced 6~24% in chlorination) compared with no preozonation. Thus the low ozone dose pretreatment is relatively effective plan to reduce THMs formation during chlorination. When ozone 1.0 mg/L, Alum 40 mg/L and sulfuric acid 6 mg/L dosed, The yields of THMs formation was reduced 42% compared with only chlorination. Input of chlorine after preozonation (followed coagulation, pH control) is more effective than only decline pH at a intake station to control THMs formation in a water treatment process. When chlorine 2.5 mg/L was added before coagulation (alum 40 mg/L), THMs formation was reduced 19% by lower pH and decreased 18% by a natural organic matter (NOM) removal compared with only chlorine 2.5 mg/L addition. Because coagulation could induce simultaneously lower pH and NOM removal, THM formation concentration is more effectively lowed than decreasing pH in the Nakdong river water.

This study evaluated the bactericidal effect of 10 sanitizers and disinfectants such as ethanol (75 and 95%), iodine (15 and 25 ppm), chlorine (100 and 200 ppm), quaternary ammonium, acid, hydrogen peroxide, and peroxide acetic acid against V. parahaemolyticus. Ten strains of V. parahaemolyticus isolated from Korean foods and 4 strains of standard V. parahaemolyticus were compared for efficacies of various sanitizers and disinfectants by EN 1276 method based on quantitative suspension test. Ethanol (75 and 95%), 25 ppm of iodine, 100 ppm of quaternary ammonium, 145 ppm of hydrogen peroxide and acid showed more than $5log_{10}CFU/mL$ reduction in both clean and dirty conditions. Tests result of chlorine (100 ppm) showed more than $5log_{10}CFU/mL$ reduction in clean condition. Iodine (15 ppm) showed more than $5log_{10}CFU/mL$ reduction except 4 isolated and 1 standard V. parahaemolyticus in clean condition. iodine (15 ppm) also showed under $5log_{10}CFU/mL$ reduction $(0.93{\sim}3.73log_{10}CFU/mL)$ in dirty condition. Eleven hundred ppm of hydrogen peroxide was evaluated as weak sanitizer and disinfectant due to their $0.99{\sim}4.79log_{10}CFU/mL$ reduction on both clean and dirty conditions. Consequently, ethanol, iodine (25 ppm), chlorine (200 ppm), quaternary ammonium, acid and peroxide acetic acid were thought to be effective sanitizer and disinfectant against V. parahaemolyticus.

This study evaluated the efficacy of chlorine dioxide (ClO2) as an oxidant to reduce malodor emission from chicken feces. Two experiments were performed with the following four treatments in parallel: 1) fresh chicken feces with only distilled water added as a control, 2) a commercial germicide as a positive control, and 3) 2,000 or 4) 3,000 ppm of ClO2 supplementation. Aluminum gas bags containing chicken feces sealed with a silicone plug were used in both experiments, and each treatment was tested in triplicate. In Experiment 1, 10 mL of each additive was added on the first day of incubation, and malodor emissions were then assessed after 10 days of incubation. In Experiment 2, 1 mL of each additive was added daily during a 14-day incubation period. At the end of the incubation, gas production, malodor-causing substances (H2S and NH3 gases), dry matter, pH, volatile fatty acids (VFAs), and microbial enumeration were analyzed. Supplementing ClO2 at 2,000 and 3,000 ppm significantly reduced the pH and the ammonia-N, total VFA, H2S, and ammonia gas concentrations in chicken feces compared with the control feces (P<0.05). Additionally, microbial analysis indicated that the number of coliform bacteria was decrease after ClO2 treatment (P<0.05). In conclusion, ClO2 at 2,000 and 3,000 ppm was effective at reducing malodor emission from chicken feces. However, further studies are warranted to examine the effects of ClO2 at various concentrations and the effects on malodor emission from a poultry farm.
The aim of this study was to evaluate antibacterial effect of Cl coated titanium. To coat the Cl on the titanium, first, the titanium was modified by blasting treatment with hydroxyapatite and alumina powder. Anodization process was completed using electrolyte solution of 0.04 M ${\beta}$-glycerol phosphate disodium salt n-hydrate, 0.4 M calcium acetate n-hydrate and 1 M NaCl on the condition of 250 voltages for 3 min. Surface morphology and elements' observation were performed with scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy and surface profiler was used to analyze the surface roughness. Antibacterial effect was evaluated by film adhesion method. The anodized titanium after blasting showed dimpled surface contained the Cl. Surface average roughness of these surfaces had significantly higher compared to polished titanium. Result of antibacterial test showed that anodized titanium after blasting had an enhanced antibacterial effect compared to the polished titanium. Therefore, these results suggested that titanium contained Cl by anodization after blasting had a rough surface as well as antibacterial effect.
In this study, we evaluated bacteriocidal effect of CaO (scallop shell powder) for the reduction of microorganism in Scomber japonicus and Pseudosciaena ciean manchurica, and compared with main chemical sanitizers such as chlorine, ethanol, hydrogen peroxide. As a result, the effectiveness of CaO showed dramatic reduction rate for total aerobic bacteria, Escherichia coli and Vibrio parahaemolyticus. The reduction rates of total aerobic bacteria for Scomber japonicus and Pseudosciaena ciean manchurica showed $2.6{\times}10^3\;and\;3.2{\times}10^4$ respectively; Those of Escherichia Coli were $6.3{\times}10^3\;and\;1.2{\times}10^4$, those of Vibrio parahaemolyticus were $5.4{\times}10^4\;and\;5.6{\times}\2.6{\times}10^310^4$, respectively. According to this result, bacteriocidal effect of CaO was about $10^4$ and was similar to bacteriocidal effects of other three chemical sanitizers. According to these results, CaO can alternate the currently used chemical sanitizers due to its natural origin as well as the effectiveness for sterilization.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the corrosion damage of large diameter metallic pipes buried in reclaimed land due to the corrosion effect by soil, and to propose a method of installing metal pipes in the reclaimed land. The results are as follow. First, the soil of the reclaimed land was gray clay, the soil specific resistance indicating soil corrosiveness was at least 120 Ω-cm, the pH was weakly acidic(5.04 to 5.60), the redox potential was at least 62 mV, the moisture content was at most 48.8%, and chlorine ions and sulfate ions were up to 4,706.1 mg/kg and 420 mg/kg. Therefore, the overall soil corrosivity score was up to 19, and the external corrosion effect seems to be very large. Second, the condition of straight part of pipes was in good condition, but most of KP joints were affected by corrosion at a severe level. The reason for this seems to be that KP joints accelerated corrosion due to stress and crevice corrosion in addition to galvanic corrosion in the same environment. Third, as a result of evaluating correlations of each item that affects the corrosion on the external part, the lower the soil resistivity and redox potential, the greater the effect on the KP joints corrosion, and the moisture content, chloride ion, and sulfate ion, the higher the value, the greater the effect on the corrosion of KP joints. In addition, among soil corrosion items, the coefficient of determination of soil resistivity with corrosion of KP joints was the highest with 0.6439~0.7672. Fourth, when installing metal pipes or other accessories because the soil of the reclaimed land is highly corrosive, it is necessary to apply a corrosion preventive method to extend the life of pipes and prevent leakage accidents caused by corrosion damage to the joint.
In aquatic invertebrates, particularly marine gastropods, organotin compounds induce irreversible sexual abnormality in females, which is termed imposex, at very low concentrations. Organotin compounds are agonists for nuclear receptors such as RXRs and $PPAR{\gamma}$. However, the imposex phenomenon has not been reported to act as an antagonist on estrogen receptors in other species, including vertebrates and invertebrates. In order to gain insights into the antagonistic activity of organotin compounds on estrogen receptors (ERs), we examined the inhibitive effect of these compounds on estradiol-dependent ${\beta}$-galactosidase activity using the yeast two-hybrid detection system consisting of a combination of the human estrogen receptor ($hER{\beta}$) ligand-binding domain and the co-activator steroid receptor co-activator-1 (SRC1). Tributyltin-hydroxide (TBT-OH) and triphenyltin-chlorine (TPT-Cl) exhibited an inhibitive effect on $E_2$-dependent transcriptional activity, similar to antagonistic chemicals such as 4-hydroxytamoxifen (OHT) or ICI 182,780, at a very low concentration of $10^{-14}$ M TBT or $10^{-10}$ M TPT, respectively. The yeast growth and transcriptional activity with transcriptional factor GAL4 did not exhibit any effect at the tested concentration of TBT or TPT. Moreover, the yeast two-hybrid system using the interaction between p53 and the T antigen of SV40 large did not describe any effect at the tested concentration of OHT or ICI 182,780. However, the interaction between p53 and T antigen was inhibited at a TBT or TPT concentration of $10^{-9}$ M, respectively. These results indicate that TBT and TPT act as inhibitors of ER-dependent reporter gene transcriptional activation and of the interaction between $hER{\beta}$ LBD and the co-activator SRC1 in the yeast two-hybrid system. Consequently, our data could partly explain the occurrence of organotin compound-induced imposex on the endocrine system of mammals, including humans.
This study was conducted to identify the potential of Quercus mongolica (QUM), Pinus densiflora (PID) and Pinus rigida (PIR) as a raw material for pellet production. Larix kaempferi (LAK), which has mostly been used for pellet production in Korea, was also used as a control. All specimens contained very minimal amounts of sulfur and chlorine. Ash content of LAK was the lowest, followed by PID, PIR and QUM. For the size distribution, the mass fraction between 0.42 mm and 0.25 mm was the highest in PIR. Most fuel characteristics of the produced wood pellets improved with the use of 12% moisture content (MC) particles and the increase of the ratio of length to diameter of a hole in flat-die (L/D ratio). When the MC, bulk density and durability of QUM, PID, PIR and LAK pellets was compared with the standards of the KFRI and ISO, the use of wood particles of 12% MC and flat-die with an L/D ratio of 5.00 for PID particles are suitable for high-quality pellets in the aspects of all fuel characteristics. For PIR and QUM, further work is needed to seek the optimum conditions for the production of high-quality and durable pellets.
A microbiological quality evaluation on cooked food, food materials and cooking equipment was conducted in 14 school food services in Changwon area, South Korea for Ojingeochaesomoochim (vegetable salad with blanched squid) which went through cooking process after heating treatment. Only 5 schools out of the 14 (35.7%) observed the sanitization criteria of the Korean School Meals Sanitization Management for raw vegetables (concentration of chlorine solution: 100ppm, immersion time of sanitizing: 5 min). The acceptance rates regarding the microbial standards for Korean school meals showed improvement before and after of sanitization: for onions 57.1% vs 71.4%; cucumber 42.9% vs. 78.6%. However, garlic showed adverse sanitizing effect as the acceptance rate went down from 42.9% to 35.7%. Blanched squid and red pepper paste was acceptable in all 14 schools (100%), while squid seasoned with red pepper powder was acceptable in only 42.9% of the schools. Microbial results for knives, cutting boards, mixing bowls were satisfactory, however 35.7% of sanitary gloves that were put on right before the seasoning showed poor sanitization, and this indicated high probability of cross-contamination from the gloves. We calculated that 57.1% of the cooked foods were in accordance with the microbial standards for Korean school meals. Therefore, it is strongly recommended to have verification process, especially on the effectiveness of sanitization of raw vegetables, in cooking foods through cooking process after heating treatment in HACCP system of school food service.
