Purpose : The prevalence of obese children has recently increased. Obesity is known to be associated with complications such as hypertension, fatty liver, hyperlipidemia, and insulin resistance. L-carnitine is an essential cofactor for the transport of long chain fatty acids into mitochondria for ${\beta}$-oxidation. The purpose of this study is to measure serum free fatty acid and carnitine levels, and evaluate the role of L-carnitine as a therapeutic drug in obese children with fatty liver. Methods : Nine obese children, ranging from seven to 18 years of age, and 10 normal children were examined. Serum lipid(total cholesterol, triglyceride, HDL-cholesterol, and LDL-cholesterol) and fatty acid levels were analyzed. Serum total, free, and acyl carnitine levels were performed also by a new enzymatic cycling technique. Results : Long chain fatty acids(myristic acid, palmitoleic acid, palmitic acid, linoleic acid, oleic acid, and stearic acid)were significantly increased in obese children compared to the control group. Total, and acyl carnitine levels were significantly increased in obese children compared to the control group. Conclusion : Serum free fatty acid and carnitine levels were significantly increased in obese children with fatty liver compared to the normal control. This may suggest that L-carnitine can be used as antilipidemic agent to decrease fatty acid and lipid levels for obese children. Prospective studies will investigate serum fatty acid and carnitine levels after treatment of L-carnitine in obese children in the future.

Herein, the preparation of anion exchange membrane (AEM) from brominated poly(2,6-dimethyl 1,6-phenylene oxide) BPPO and dimethylaniline (DMA) by phase-inversion process is reported. Anion exchange membranes (AEMs) are prepared by varying the DMA contents. Prepared AEMs show high thermal stability, water uptake (WR) around 202% to 226%, dimensional change ratios of 1.5% to 2.6% and ion exchange capacities (IECs) of 0.34 mmol/g to 0.82 mmol/g with contact angle of $59.18^{\circ}$ to $65.15^{\circ}$. These membranes are porous in nature as confirmed by SEM observation. The porous property of membranes are important as it could reduce the resistance of transportation of ions across the membranes. They have been used in diffusion dialysis (DD) process for recovery of hydrochloric acid (HCl) from the mixture of HCl and ferrous chloride ($FeCl_2$). Presence of $-N+(CH_3)_2C_6H_5Br^-$ as a functional group in membrane matrix facilitates its applications in DD process. The dialysis coefficients of hydrochloric acid ($U_H$) of the membranes are in range of 0.0016 m/h to 0.14 m/h and the separation factors (S) are in range of 2.09 to 7.32 in the $HCl/FeCl_2$ system at room temperature. The porous membrane structure and presence of amine functional group are responsible for the mechanism of diffusion dialysis (DD).
Generally, UFF A(Ultra Fine Fly Ash) has merit that advances a greater concrete workability and activates a greater pozzolanic reaction than common fly ash due to its ultra fine particle size. These properties enhance concrete durability by reducing permeability and increasing resistance of alkali silica reaction(ASR) and sulfate attack, etc. Due to these reasons, UFFA can be used in a rapid setting concrete. The purpose of this study is to develop and evaluate the rapid setting concrete with UFF A as a repair material for early-opening-to-traffic. In previous studies, if only UFFA is added to the rapid setting concrete mixture, pozzolanic reaction doesn't happen actively. Therefore, in this study, the chemical and physical tests were performed for rapid setting concrete with UFFA including calcium hydroxide and the activity of pozzolanic reaction was evaluated. Finally, the effectiveness of this mixture on enhancing concrete durability was investigated. As results, adding UFF A decreased the water/cement ratio of concrete, and compensated the reduced portion of the early strength of concrete. Also, rapid setting concrete with UFFA including calcium hydroxide activated a greater pozzolanic reaction than normal-UFF A concrete. As calcium hydroxide increases, electrical indication of concrete's ability to resist chloride ion penetration is promoted significantly.

In this study, hybrid method using polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) which has a strong adhesion and flexibility in which acrylic copolymer chemical-reaction reacts with cement, and is eco-friendly, is to improve the watertightness. The hybrid method is applied applied primarily waterproof stuff comprising silicate system and secondary mortar mixed with PVAc on the concrete surface. And then, in order to evaluate the performance, the properties of bond strength and amount of water absorption were measured. Based on the above experiments, mock-up specimens for field application were fabricated, and then the properties were evaluated as laboratory experiments. As the results, specimens cast from hybrid method using PVAc showed the best results on watertightness and bond strength. And also, with respect to experiment of mock-up specimens, the properties were in agreement with laboratory results. Especially, it could know that PVAc has strengthening effect from the results of the compressive strength. Due to outstanding results of carbonation depth and resistance to chloride ion penetration, it may be applied in weak areas such as underground and marine structures.

This study is about the reuse of bottom ash, which is released as a necessity in thermal power plant. In general, coal-ash are classified as fly-ash, bottom-ash, cinder-ash. Of these, a large amount of fly ash is being recycled as cement substitutes. While, recycling rates of bottom ash are the lowest due to its porosity and high absorption. In this study, the durability of the concrete using bottom ash as a concrete fine aggregate was evaluated. The using level of the bottom ash ranges to step-by-step from 0% to 30%. According to the result of the durability test, regardless of the presence of the bottom ash, freeze-thaw durability could be secured by air entrainment. In case of the resistance to chloride ions penetration, the length change, and the effects on heavy metals, the replacement of bottom ash as fine aggregate was not critical. Although carbonation penetration was higher as the replacement level of bottom ash increased, the experiment showed that it could be possible to use bottom ash as concrete fine aggregate with proper mix design.
Kim, Jong Hyup, (Div. of Biology, Atomic Energy Research Institute.) Studies on the Cellular Metabolism in Microorganisms as influenced by Gamma-irradiation(II). On respiration rate and dehydrogenase activity of yeast cells irradiated by gamma ray from cobalt-60. 1. Oxygen uptake rate of the gamma irraiated yeast cells had been measured with Warburg's manometer, and the $O_{2}$-uptake was compared with those of normal cells. The rate of endogetious respiration increases in its $O_2$-uptake at 150, 000 rentgen dose, and at higher rentoen doses it was decreased. Exogenous respiration begin to decrease in its O_2$-uptake at 5, 000r. doses of irradiation, further decrease with increasing of doses unproportionally. 2. It appears that plasma-membrane and nuclear membrane of yeast cells have changed and denatured by gamma-irradiation, as exogenous respiration of glucose had been decreased at a dose of 200, 000r's irradiation. 3. The activity of glucose, alcoholic, lactic, succinic and glutamic deliydrogenase (G.D.H., A.D.H., L.D.H., S.D.11., and GL.D.H.) in the gamma irradaited cells had been assayed by T.T.C.(Triphenyl tetrazolium chloride) method and spectrophotometry, the obtained results were compared with those of normal cells. 4. At a dose of and 10, 000 rentgens' irradiation of gamma ray, the activty of each debydrogenase (G.D.H., A.D.H., L.D.H., ) shows a sharp and highest peak in optical absorbalicy, but each abtivity of S.D.H and Gl.D.H shows its' maximum peak at a dose of 30, 000r. 5. The curve of each dehydrogenase activity was found to be rhythmical according to dose-rate of gamma irradiation. 6. Comparing with activity of debydrogenase each other, the maximum peak in optical absorbency can be arranged according to order as follows; glucose > alcoholoic > lactic > glutamic > succinic, this order is identical to the order of breakdown utility in respiration of normal yeast cells. 7. The activity of dehydrogenase experimented exhibit a resistance against gamma irradiation at lethal dose of cells, and the activity of dehydrogenase are found to be much resistant than those of respiratory system. We may assume that the membrane substrate of mitochondria or cytoplasm had been destructed by gamma-irradiation much more than that of dehydronase system.
Recently, the deterioration of concrete structures have been increased by the damage from salt, carbonization, freezing & thawing and the others. Therefore, the measures for the deterioration of concretes have been taken. Among them, it has been often used that surface treatment which cut off the deterioration factors of durability by protecting the surface of concrete. The water proof and repair materials for concrete mainly use organic materials such as epoxy, these materials excel in intial bonding force and resistance to chemical agents. But they cause difference in the modulus of elasticity and the rate of shrinkage and expansion of concrete, and thus result in such problems as scaling and spatting in the progress of time. Therefore in this study it develop the performance Improving agent of concrete surface that can block a deterioration cause such as $CO_2$ gas, chloride ion and water from the outside and enhance waterproofing ability by reinforcing the concrete surface when applying it to concrete structures.

A study to apply phase change material(PCM) to rapid hardening cement paste forming semi-rigid pavement was carried out. The characteristics fresh and hardened paste were evaluated through the experiment for a total of 6 mixtures according to the cement type and the substitution of phase change material for acrylate. The fluidity by substituting phase change material for acrylate satisfied the target flow time of 10 to 13 seconds. In case of setting time, it was possible to secure the performance of rapid hardening cement by substituting phase change material, and if the substitution ratio over 60%, the initial set occurred 1 to 2 minutes faster than other mixtures. In case of compressive strength and bond strength, it showed similar strength characteristics with the plain mixture, and it satisfied both the target compressive and bonding strength of 36MPa and 2MPa. The mixture substituting phase change material showed higher resistance to chloride ion penetration than the mixture only using acrylate and the OPC level was insufficient. From the results of physical and mechanical performances of semi-rigid pavement cement paste, the phase change material substitution rate of 20% was effective in the range of this study.

This study developed a high strength and performance concrete pavement material with low shrinkage and reflection of sunlight. Based on the literature review, a new mix-design of applying flash ash to improve the strength and performance of the concrete as well as to reduce the dry shrinkage is suggested. In addition, adding black pigment to reduce the reflection and technique of applying OAG (Optimized Aggregate Gradation) is also included. The result of the laboratory experiment indicates that the brightness and the reflection, which depends on the ratio of black pigment addition, did not deviate from the normal range. When OAG is considered for the mix-design, the strength and performance of the concrete improved greatly. In addition, the mix-design using fly ash reduced the dry shrinkage of concrete and improved the resistance to the permeation of chloride ion. Furthermore, the mix-design, which uses fly ash (25% replacement) and black pigment (3% addition) with the application of OAG, is found to be the most effective mix to reduce the shrinkage and reflection as well as improving the strength and performance of the concrete. The result of an economic analysis indicates that the initial construction cost of this proposed mix is more expensive than that of normal concrete pavement material. However, it can be more economic in the long run because the normal concrete pavement material is likely to cost more due to higher probability of maintenance and repair and higher social cost due to traffic accident, etc.
This study was conducted to evaluate herbicide resistant plant through tissue culture. Callus was induced from embryos of Echinochloa crusgalli Beauv. (var, oryzicola Ohwi, var. caudata Kitagawa and var, crusgalli). An optium medium for callus induction and succinate dehydrogenase activity in inducted callus were detected and callus growth of various varieties of Echinochloa crusgalli was assessed under the treatment of various rates of butachlor[N-(butoxymethyl)-2-chloro-N-(2,6-diethylphenyl)acetamide]. MS medium seemed to be the most appropriate to induce callus from the embryos of varieties of E. crusgalli by using 2,4-D about 5.5mg/l as a hormone source. The activity of succinate dehydrogenase in inducted callus showed positive reaction against to TTC(2,3,5-triphenyltetrazolium chloride) regardless of concentrations of butachlor and varieties of E. crusgalli, indicating that all the callus induced were alive. The callus growths derived from seeds of E, cnesgalli were greatly affected by various rates of butachlor and were completely inhibited at the highest concentration of butachlor, $10^{-3}M$, regardless of varieties of E. crasgalli. $10^{-6}M$ of butachlor inhibited 24.6% of the callus growth of E. crusgalli Beauv, var. oryzicola Ohwi, while E. crusgalli Beauv. var. crusgalli showed 42% of inhibition, showing that there was difference in response of varieties of E. crusgalli Beauv. to butachlor.
