  • Volatile flavor components (VFCs) in cooked black rices (Suwon-415 and Chindo) were studied. The major reactions during cooking, which result in aroma volatiles, are the Maillard reaction between amino acids and reducing sugars, and thermal degradation of lipid. Black rices washed with water were soaked in 1.5 folds water and heated at $110^{\circ}C$ in oil bath for 30min. VFCs in cooked black rices were extracted for three hours by SDE and were analyzed by GC and GC/MS. A total of 91, 82 volatiles were identified in Suwon-415 and Chindo black rice, respectively. Suwon-415 was composed of 26 alcohols, 10 aldehydes, 5 acids, 11 esters, 15 ketones, 9 hydrocarbons, 3 furans, 3 nitrogen containing compounds and 9 sulfur containing compounds. Chindo was composed of 28 alcohols, 9 aldehydes, 4 acids, 12 esters, 14 ketones, 5 hydrocarbons, 3 furans, 3 nitrogen containing compounds and 4 sulfur containing compounds.

  • The Korean peninsula has a number of coastal sites where the rhythmic rising and lowering of water surface due to tides result in strong tidal current. The kinetic energy of these currents can be efficiently exploited by using tidal current turbines. The pilot tidal current power plant is to be constructed at the Uldolmok between Chindo and Haenam. Extensive coastal engineer ing research works have been carried out. This paper describes some observation results of field campaign, design of the supporting structure of a pilot plant of 1,000kW and a future tidal current power plant and so on.

In this paper we describes some observation results of the tide and tidal current. as well as modeling work in order to investigate the tide and tidal current regime change in relation to the tidal current power plant (TCPP) construction. The special modeling skill in order to consider the turbine operation in the TCPP is developed and applied to the estimation for the flow regime change by the simple layout of the tidal current power plant.

  • Uldolmok waterway is famous for its strong tidal current with maximum current of about 12knots, which is located between the Chindo island off the southwestern tip of Korean peninsula and mainland. A serious of field observations, along with numerical modeling, have been carried out over the last several years, in order to understand the tidal dynamics and to examine the related variables according to the tidal current power plant (TCPP) operation.

  • To clarify the spider fauna of Geojedo Island, a field survery was conducted in August, 1997. As a result, 92 species belonging to 56 genera of 20 families were collected. Identified spider are composed of 6.60% Palaearctic, 7.70% Holarctic, 2.20% Oriental, 3.30% cosmopolitan species. Spiders of Theridiidae, Araneidae and Salticidae were dominant, 82(90.1%) and 75 species(82.4%) of spiders were found in common with Japan, China, respectively. Faunal similarities between Geojedo island and Deogjeong Archipelago, Chejudo Island, Ulleungdo Island, Chindo Island, Paiklyeongdo Island and Kogeumdo Island are discussed.

  • Vegetational structure and successional sere were investigated for the evergreen and nearby deciduous broad-leaved forests in inland areas (Turyunsan, Pulgapsan) and south- western island areas (Hongdo, Chindo). The evergreen broad-leaved forests of the four areas showed a sera1 stage with an age structure mostly under fifty years old. Dominant evergreen broad-leaved species in canopy layer were Castanopsis cuspidata var. sieboldii, Machilus thunbergii, Quercus acuta, Q. stenophylla, Q. glauca, and Ncolitsea serzceu. Succession of the forest vegetation in the surveyed areas was proceeding from deciduous broad-leaved trees to evergreen broad-leaved trees. The species of climax stage were assumed to be Machilus thunbergii, iVeolitseu sericea and Dendropanax morbifera in canopy layer, Aucuba japonica and Machilus japonica in subtree and shrub layer.

  • Thevetia peruviana (Yellow Oleander) seed oil was extracted with n-hexane in a soxhlet extractor. The ethanolysis and methanolysis of the oil were carried out with 50% of potassium hydroxide in ethanol and methanol respectively by weight of oil, as catalyst. The biodiesel was tested for biodegradability using E. coli. The percentage yield of the FAEE and FAME were 84.8% and 91.6% respectively. The biodegradability values of 81.4% and 86.2% were obtained for FAEE and FAME respectively after a period of 28 days. Other fuel quality parameters determined are the cetane index of 47.19 (FAEE) and 58.97 (FAME), flash point of $198^{\circ}C$ (FAEE) and $175^{\circ}C$ (FAME), kinematic viscosity at $40^{\circ}C$ of 5.21 $mm^2s^{-1}$ (FAEE) and 5.10 $mm^2s^{-1}$(FAME), pour point of $4^{\circ}C$ (FAEE) and $-2^{\circ}C$ (FAME) and a cloud point of $6^{\circ}C$ (FAEE) and $3^{\circ}C$ (FAME). Thus, Thevetia peruviana oil has a high potential for use in production of environmentally friendly biodiesel.
