  • This study was performed to formulate the most recent traits of physical growth of youth, and to identify the need of youth for health promotion planning in modern Korea. Study participants were 171 boys and 400 girls in two senior high schools in Seoul, Korea. Health records were collected from the individual students in May 2005. Longitudinal data on stature and body weight from 6 to 16 years old were analysed. Significance tests on some measures were performed by t-test and ANOVA. Major conclusions were as follows: 1. Girls were taller than boys during the specific time of adolescence. However, this phenomenon was not found in the growth process investigated by peak age and in over-all mean growth process of body weight. 2. Peak age came later in boys than in girls in both stature and body weight. This meant that boys matured later in stature and body weight than girls. However, boys were larger in peak velocity than girls. 3. Peak ages distributed more widely in girls than in boys both for stature and body weight. 4. Even in such short growth process from 6 through 16 years old, growth spurt tended to appear in several times. 5. Growth spurt tended to appear more often in boys than in girls.

  • The purposes of this study was to provide the fundamental data for children's wear standardizing sizes of ready-made clothes by analyzing the elementary school girls’somatotype. The subjects for anthropometic measurements were 434 elementary school girls’by age groups < ‘(1st age(1ㆍ2 grade)’,‘2nd age(3ㆍ4 grade)’, and 3rd(5ㆍ6 grade)’ > living in Pusan. According to the analysis of upper bodies by the age groups 1. According to the analysis to draw somatometric factors by the age groups, sevenㆍseven and six actors in 1st . End and 3rd age groups are obtained from measurements of upper body. 2. The 1st & 2nd age groups: As the result of factor analysis for the factor, the first and second factors which explain more than 70% of the whole variance represent“horizontal size”and“vertical size”, which characterize more aspects of the body shape of girls at elementary school ages. 3. The 3rd age groups: As the result of factor analysis for the factor, 6 factor which explain 74.39% of variance were extracted form anthropometic data. The first factor represented the items of circumference, breadth and depth related to“sectional size the front length of the upper body”, The second factor described the items of "heights & the back length of the upper body”.

  • Background: To review the experience that used both ventricular assist device(VAD) and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation(ECMO) for children with congential heart disease requiring postcardiotomy mechanical circulatory support. Material and Method: Between March 1993 and May 1995, we applied mechanical assist device using centrifugal pump to the 16 patients who failed to be weaned from cardiopulmonary bypass(n=15) or had been in cardiogenic shock in intensive care unit(n=1). The diagnosis were all congenital heart diseases and the ages of patients ranged from 20 days to 10 years (mean age=2.5$\pm$3.5 years). Result: The methods of mechanical circulatory support were LVAD(n=13), BVAD (n=1), and ECMO(n=2). The mean assist times were 54.0$\pm$23.7 hours. Post-assist complications were in orders: bleeding, acute renal failure, ventricular failure, respiratory failure, infection, and neurologic complication. It was possible for 9 patients(56.3%) to be weaned from assist device and 5 patients(31.3%) were discharged from hospital. There was no statistical significant between hospital discharged group and undischarged group by age, body weight, cardiopulmonary bypass time, and assist time. Conclusion: The ventricular assist device is an effective modality in salvaging the patient who failed to be weaned from cardiopulmonary bypass, but multiple factors must be considered for improving the results of mechanical circulatory support ; such as patient selection, optimal time of starting the assist device, and prevention and management of the complications.

  • This research is intended to explore the adaptation process for immigrant women and their Korean spouses through a qualitative method. It is aimed at understanding how immigrant women and their Korean spouses have adjusted to their lives in Korea over the last 10 years and how they have dealt with difficulties in the adaptation process. The participants were 15 intermarried couples consisting of a Southeast Asian wife and a Korean husband. They got married through matchmakers and have children between the ages of 8 and 13. The study carried out in-depth interviews. To analyze the interview data, the qualitative software program Nvivo8 was used. The results showed that immigrant women and their Korean spouses experienced confusion at first. They struggled adapting to each other's lifestyles and made efforts to establish harmony. In the end, they made their own family identity as a multicultural family. The study widens the understanding of multicultural families by focusing on both wives and husbands. Also, the use of the Nvivo8 software strengthens the reliability of the data analysis. The results will contribute to providing interracial couples with the adaptive strategies.

  • As the population of the aged and the disabled increases, the needs for universal design is also growing. Universal design is to design for diverse users including all ages from children to the elderly, the disabled and non-disabled, the pregnant, the tourist, and etc. This study is intended to develop the design evaluation tool and guidelines of universal design for applying to space design. In order to achieve this, four basic spaces in human living such as residential space, educational space, working space, and cultural space were selected. Then, the elements of universal design were chosen for each space. The numbers of areas in each space were 12 for residential spae, 5 for educational space, 6 for working space, and 6 for cultural space. Also, 60 elements of universal design for residential space, 53 for educational space, 36 for working space, and 46 for cultural space were selected. The field observation with photos and user evaluation survey were carried out for each space by using these elements. Finally, the elements and guidelines of universal design applied for spatial design were suggested. This consisted of 8 areas and 67 elements. This would be useful for designing space for all people.

  • Pulmonary atresia and ventricular septal defect with major aortopulmonary collateral arteries [abbreviated as PA+VSD+MAPCA in the following] has limited the success of attempts at accurate diagnosis and complete surgical repair. From April 1986 to September 1990, 23 patients with PA+VSD+MAPCA among 96 patients of PA+VSD in Seoul National University Children’s Hospital were encountered. The group comprised 14 male and 9 female patients with ages ranging from 17 days to 177 months [mean 49.6 months]. We operated one stage total repair on good pulmonary artery sized two patients by R.E.V. [Reparation a l’etage ventriculaire] and Rastelli operation respectively. And the 11 patients who had independent MAPCAs and hypoplastic central pulmonary artery were dealt with unifocalization and modified Blalock-Taussig Shunt and followed by second stage repair in 3 patients later. We successfully had managed 7 patients whose MAPCAs could be ligated with modified Blalock-Taussig Shunt and followed by second stage repair in 3 patients with R.E.V or Rastelli operation. Recently, three obstruction after 11 unifocalization procedures made us to try palliative right ventricle-pulmonary artery conduit operation by Gore-Tex vascular graft interposition under cardiopulmonary bypass. And so we managed another 3 patients with these procedures for the purpose of pulmonary artery growth whose central pulmonary artery were severely hypoplastic. We experienced one death after second stage repair whose central pulmonary artery was created by 12mm Gore-Tex vascular graft and was unifocalized.

  • Many investigators have studied the growth changes of craniofacial complex to obtain important informations and standard values with which attempts at prediction of growth and treatment results have been under exploration. The author analyzed 360 cephalometric roentgenograms of 40 boys and 50 girls taken from the ages of 6 to 9 to assess the growth changes of craniofacial complex and to establish Korean norms by Ricketts' analysis method. 17 Landmarks, 10 planes and 8 angles were plotted and measured by linearly and angularly. The results were as follows: 1. The author made the tables of means, standard deviations from the measured values. 2. The item which showed significant difference between males and females in longitudinal study was facial axis length. 3. Items which show significant changes during 3 years were cranial base length, facial axis length, lower incisor to APO, Upper molar to PTV in males, and cranial base length, facial axis length, upper molar to PTV in females. 4. The correlations between cranial base length and facial axis length to body height and weight were higher in males than in females throughout the items.

  • To study the role of anomalous pancreatico-biliary ductal union (APBDU) in the development of choledochal cyst, we reviewed 23 cases. APBDU is defined as a long common channel(>0.4 mm). The patients ages ranged from 1 week to 112 months and the mean age was 22.5 months. Right upper quadrant pain was the most prevalent symptom. The diagnosis was made by ultrasonography and operative cholangiography in most patient. The preoperative diagnosis was made in 100 % of the cases. Gallstones were found in 5 cases. Todani type I and type IV were prevalent. A long common channel was found in all cases. The operative treatment consisted of cyst excision and Reux-en-Y hepaticojejunostomy or choledochojejunosotmy. One patient had postoperative pancreatitis. There was no mortality. We conclude that detection of choledochal cyst is occurring at a younger age and APBDU seems to play an important role in the pathogenesis of type I and IV cysts. Cyst excision is the treatment of choice to eliminate repeated cholangitis and malignant transformation.
