Adapting the Community Readiness Model and Validating a Community Readiness Tool for Childhood Obesity Prevention Programs in Iran

  • Objectives: It is critical to assess community readiness (CR) when implementing childhood obesity prevention programs to ensure their eventual success and sustainability. Multiple tools have been developed based on various conceptions of readiness. One of the most widely used and flexible tools is based on the community readiness model (CRM). This study aimed to adapt the CRM and assess the validity of a community readiness tool (CRT) for childhood obesity prevention programs in Iran. Methods: A Delphi study that included 26 individuals with expertise in 8 different subject areas was conducted to adapt the CRM into a theoretical framework for developing a CRT. After linguistic validation was conducted for a 35-question CR interview guide, the modified interview guide was evaluated for its content and face validity. The quantitative and qualitative analyses were performed using Stata version 13 and MAXQDA 2010, respectively. Results: The Delphi panelists confirmed the necessity/appropriateness and adequacy of all 6 CRM dimensions. The Persian version of the interview guide was then modified based on the qualitative results of the Delphi study, and 2 more questions were added to the community climate dimension of the original CRT. All questions in the modified version had acceptable content and face validity. The final CR interview guide included 37 questions across 6 CRM dimensions. Conclusions: By adapting the CRM and confirming linguistic, content, and face validity, the present study devised a CRT for childhood obesity prevention programs that can be used in relevant studies in Iran.

교구로봇을 활용한 활동이 유아의 논리-수학적 지식과 창의적 문제해결능력에 미치는 영향 (The Effect of Activities using Hands-on Robots on Logic-Mathematical Knowledge and Creative Problem-Solving Ability of Young Children)

  • Robots are used in early childhood education as a new instructional media, and educational activities using robots have been increased. So the purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of educational activities using hands-on robots on logic-mathematical knowledge and creative problem-solving ability of young children. The total number of subjects was 43, and they were all five-year-old children. The experimental group and control group did activities with hands-on robots and general free activities, respectively. Results using ANCONA have shown that the activities with hands-on robots positively affected logic-mathematical knowledge and creative problem-solving ability of young children. These meaningful results have shown the possibility of early childhood educational use as the effectiveness of hands-on robots has come out.

영유아교사의 영유아 권리 인식의 실행 노력에 대한 연구 (Study on Early Childhood Teachers' Attempts to Implement Perception on Rights of Young Children)

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to figure out early childhood teachers' perception on rights of young children and what they do to implement the perceived rights of young children in early childhood settings. Methods: Two individual and two group interviews were conducted. First, individual interviews were held with one childcare center teacher, and then interviews were held with one kindergarten teacher. Both group interviews were conducted with three different kindergarten teachers. All interviews were held two times. Recorded and transcribed interview data were analyzed. Results: The results are as follows. First, participants perceived rights as natural, protective, expressive, equally respectful, and joyful but understood differently from that of adults due to developmental status of young children, which included rights to life, equality, participation, protection, and happiness. Second, teachers remarked that they used strategies to project young children's emotions to implement perception on rights to life and happiness, discern deprivation from violation for rights to protection and equality, and set rules and have double standards utilizing resources around, for rights to participation. Conclusion/Implications: These results have implication for organizing contents for rights education for early childhood teachers.

Maternal Factors and Risk of Childhood Leukemia

  • Background: Although the cause in most cases of childhood leukemia is not known, the contribution of environmental risk factors in the context of genetic predisposition has been reported with inconsistent results. The aim of this study was to examine association of childhood leukemia with maternal factors especially during pregnancy, to help in avoiding risk factors. Materials and Methods: This case-control study included children younger than 18 years diagnosed with leukemia from 2008 to 2012. Controls were randomly selected and individually matched to cases with respect to age, sex, and residency. All variables were compared between cases and control to determine any significant association with leukemia. Results: Statistically significant associations between risk of childhood leukemia with mother's education (p=0.001), occupation (p=0.0005) and pesticides exposure (p=0.005) during pregnancy were found. However, there were no significant links with maternal age (p=0.090), history of fetal loss (0.85), history of radiography during pregnancy (p=0.400), history of drug intake (p=0.689) and infection (p=0.696) during pregnancy. Conclusions: The results showed increased risk of leukemia in children whose mothers were working in agriculture and were exposed to pesticides during pregnancy. The further study needs to be investigated to know association of various maternal risk factors with leukemia which remained unknown in this study.

유아교사의 시민의식이 공동체 구현 실천 행동에 미치는 영향에서 혁신문화의 매개 효과 (The Effects of Early Childhood Teachers' Civic Consciousness on Actions for Building an Community: The Mediating Effect of Innovative Culture)

  • Objective: The purpose of this study is to examine the mediating effect of innovative culture in early childhood education institutions on the relationship between teachers' civic consciousness and actions for building a community in order to obtain methodological information for implementation at a time when the need to build an education community has been raised. Methods: The data were collected through 275 early childhood teachers working in kindergartens and daycare centers Then, descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and regression were conducted. Results: All three variables civic consciousness, innovative culture, and actions for building a community showed a significant positive correlation. As a result of analyzing the mediating effect of innovation culture, it was found that the indirect effect of teachers' civic consciousness on the actions for building a community through the innovative culture was found to be statistically significant. Conclusion/Implications: This study was found that it is important to strengthen the teacher's civic consciousness and to create an innovative culture of early childhood education institutions in order to promote actions for building an educational community of teachers. This study is meaningful in that it provided implications for the direction of teacher education and formation of an innovative culture in early childhood education institutions for the purpose building an educational community.

모유수유와 유아기 우식증과의 관련성: 국민건강보험공단 영유아 구강검진 자료 분석 (Association between breastfeeding and early childhood caries: analysis of National Health Insurance Corporation's oral examination data for infants and toddlers)

  • Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of breastfeeding on the occurrence of early childhood caries in Korean infants and toddlers. Methods: Data on oral examinations of infants and toddlers of the National Health Insurance Service were analyzed. The study subjects were children who participated in both the first, second, and third oral examinations and the first general health examination in 2008-2017 (n=142,185). Based on the responses to the questionnaire, the subjects were classified into breastfeeding, formula feeding, and mixed feeding groups. The participants were monitored for the development of early childhood caries in three sequential oral examinations. Results: Based on the oral examination results conducted at 54-65 months old, the decayed-filled teeth index of the breastfeeding group was the highest (2.03±3.08), followed by the mixed (1.96±3.03) and the formula feeding groups (1.82±2.91). The Cox proportional hazard regression model including all the variables showed that the risk of developing dental caries was significantly lower in the formula (hazard ratio [HR], 0.85) and mixed feeding groups (HR, 0.91) than in the breastfeeding group. Conclusions: Breastfeeding children have a higher risk of early childhood caries; therefore, oral hygiene education and regular dental check-ups are necessary.

유아교사의 사회적 지지 및 교사효능감이 회복탄력성에 미치는 영향 (Study of the Effects of Early Childhood Teachers' Social Support and Teacher Efficacy on Resilience)

  • 본 연구는 유아교사의 사회적 지지, 교사효능감과 회복탄력성이 어떠한 관계가 있는지 살펴보고, 사회적 지지, 교사효능감이 유아교사의 회복탄력성에 미치는 영향을 알아보는데 목적이 있다. 연구대상은 전북지역 소재의 유치원과 어린이집에 근무하는 교사 282명이다. 자료분석은 Pearson의 적률상관분석, Stepwise 방식에 의한 다중회귀분석을 실시하였다. 연구의 결과 첫째, 유아교사의 회복탄력성과 사회적 지지 및 교사효능감 간의 관계에서는 유의미한 정적 상관관계가 나타났다. 사회적 지지 전체는 회복탄력성 하위요인 모두에서, 정적 상관관계를 나타냈으며 교사효능감 전체는 회복탄력성의 하위요인 모두에서 정적 상관관계가 나타났다. 둘째, 유아교사의 회복탄력성에 미치는 사회적 지지, 교사효능감의 영향력을 검증한 결과 유아교사의 회복탄력성 전체에 대해서는 개인적 교사효능감, 물질적 지지, 일반적 교사효능감이 유의미한 영향요인으로 작용하였다. 결론적으로 본 연구에서는 회복탄력성을 높이기 위해서는 교사효능감을 높일 수 있는 교사들의 자기계발과 사회적 지지가 뒷받침되어야 함을 시사하고 있다.

도시지역 초등학생 비만 수준 및 관련 요인에 대한 연구 -사회경제적 요인을 중심으로- (Study on the Relationship between Childhood Obesity and Various Determinants, including Socioeconomic Factors, in an Urban Area)

  • Objectives: This study was conducted to investigate the prevalence of childhood obesity, the association between the undesirable lifestyles and socioeconomic factors, the association between childhood obesity and various risk factors, including socioeconomic factors, and the agreement between the body mass index (BMI) classification and the body fat percentage. Methods: The study subjects were all the 5th grade students from all the elementary schools in Gunpo City, Kyunggi Province, South Korea (4043 children at 22 schools). The subjects were measured for their height, weight and percent body fat etc. and they were also surveyed by questionnaire from March 18th to April 25th, 2005. To determine whether the children were within normal limits or not, standardized BMIs for each age group were used. The data was analyzed by logistic regression analysis using SAS 9.0 version. Results: The prevalence of childhood obesity prevalence was 25.1 %. Boys had a higher prevalence of obesity (27.5%) than did the girls (22.5%). Children had tendencies of having undesirable lifestyles and getting obese if they had a lower socioeconomic status. The risk factors for childhood obesity were low paternal education (OR: 1.17, 95% CI : 0.97-1.42) and non-parental caregivers (OR: 1.34, 95% CI : 0.98-1.82). Other risk factors for childhood obesity were a high birth-weight, longer TV/computer-using time, a lower fruit-eating frequency, short sleeping hours and parental obesity. The agreement rate between the BMI classification and the body fat percentage was 93.1 %. Conclusions: This study showed the children had a higher prevalence of obesity: further, not only individual lifestyles, but also socioeconomic factors could influence childhood obesity. Childhood obesity was especially more problematic for children with a low socioeconomic status.

아동기 외상 경험과 문제행동에 대한 청소년 자신과 부모 평가 간의 관계 : 비행청소년과 일반청소년 비교 (The Relationship between Childhood Trauma Experience and Parent-Adolescent Reports of Problem Behavior : Comparison of Delinquent and General Adolescent)

  • Objectives : The aim of this study was to investigate correlation of childhood trauma experience and parent-adolescents' assessment reports on problem behavior through comparison of delinquent and general adolescents. Methods : First, delinquent adolescents and general adolescents were asked to complete the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ). Then, 71 pairs of delinquent adolescents and their parents and 133 pairs of general adolescents and their parents were asked to complete the Korean Youth Self-Report (K-YSR) and the Korean Child Behavior Checklist (K-CBCL). Finally, responses from 410 people were used for the analysis. Results : First, childhood trauma experience score was significantly higher for delinquent adolescents, compared to general adolescents. Second, t-test showed a greater difference between K-YRS and K-CBCL for general adolescents than for delinquent adolescents. Third, in the case of delinquent adolescents, the correlation analysis of K-YSR filled out by adolescents and K-CBCL filled out by parents showed significant correlation in certain areas, including social immaturity, delinquent behaviors, internalization issues, and externalization issues. On the other hand, the correlation analysis of K-YSR and K-CBCL of general adolescents showed significant correlation in all sub-categories. Fourth, the correlation analysis of delinquent adolescents' CTQ and K-YSR showed minimal yet significant correlation in social adaptation, withdrawing, depression/anxiety, and delinquent/aggressive behaviors, however, no correlation was observed between CTQ and K-CBCL. The correlation analysis of general adolescents' CTQ and K-YSR, and CTQ and K-CBCL showed significant correlation in all sub-categories, although the degree of correlation varied. Conclusion : Delinquent adolescents had more childhood traumatic experiences. However, general adolescents' childhood traumatic experiences showed minimal yet significant correlation with various adaptation indicators and their parents responded in a similar way, indicating that general adolescents with childhood traumatic experiences need close care and attention even if they have not shown prominent delinquent behaviors.

일부 유아교사와 어머니의 유아구강건강행동 및 구강건강교육에 대한 인식 비교 (Comparison between Early Childhood Teachers and Mothers in Perception of Oral Health Behavior and Education for Children)

  • 본 연구는 유아교사와 어머니들의 구강건강지식, 유아구강건강관리행동, 그리고 구강건강교육에 대한 인식 차를 알아보고자 충북 Y군 유아교사 90명과 어머니 235명을 대상으로 설문조사를 하였으며, SPSS Windows ver. 12.0 (SPSS Inc.)을 이용하여 분석한 결과 다음과 같은 결론을 얻었다. 1. 유아교사들과 어머니들의 구강건강지식정도는 차이가 없었다. 2. 유아교사들은 어머니들에 비해 보다 바람직한 치아우식예방 행동, 칫솔관리행동, 구강위생행동 지도를 하는 것으로 나타났다. 그리고 41%의 어머니들은 유아교육 및 보육 기관에서 실시하는 구강정기검진과 이후의 처치서비스에 대해 무관심하거나 인지하지 못하는 것으로 나타났다. 3. 어머니들은 유아교사들에 비해 구강건강에 대한 관심이 높으나, 유아교사들에 비해 구강건강교육에 대한 경험이 적었다. 어머니들은 유아들의 구강건강관리에 대한 내용으로 구강건강교육을 받기를 원하였고, 유아교사들은 구강건강교육을 위한 지침서와 매체에 대한 구강건강교육을 받기를 원하는 것으로 나타났다. 유아교육 및 보육기관과 가정에서 일관되게 유아를 위해 양질의 구강건강관리를 위해서는 유아교사와 어머니들 모두에게 구강보건교육에 대한 인식을 높이고, 유아구강건강 관리행동의 이행을 위해 올바른 구강건강지식을 전달하고 그들이 부족하다고 생각되는 영역에 대한 내용의 유아구강 보건교육 프로그램 개발이 요구되며, 또한 이들이 이런 프로그램을 손쉽게 접할 수 있는 교육방법 및 매체의 개발도 필요하다고 사료된다.
