Purpose: This quasi-experimental study was performed to evaluate the effectiveness of an early nursing intervention program to support mothers of children aged 0-3 yr living in poverty. Methods: In this study, mothers who received financial support from the government were recruited from one city and assigned to an intervention group (24) and comparison group (18). They completed a baseline questionnaire about depression, child rearing burden, agreement on physical punishment, and child temperament. Also, Denver II screening of the children was performed by the researcher. Mothers in the intervention group received a home visit intervention every two weeks for three months. At 3-months post-baseline, questionnaire and Denver II screening were reused to compare these two groups. Results: Mother's depression, child rearing burden, agreement on physical punishment, and child temperament were not significantly different between the two groups. However, the percentage of depression declined only in the intervention group. Mothers in the intervention group showed higher Home Observation for Measurement of the Environment (HOME) scores than mothers in the comparison group. Conclusion: The findings of the study show that this nursing intervention is an effective parenting program. The early nursing program for mothers with infant and toddlers in poverty is effective in promoting HOME, the child rearing home environment.
Purpose: Given the importance and impact of trust between nurse and pediatric patient on treatment adherence and nursing outcomes, this study was aimed to investigate how nurses perceive the trust between nurses themselves and children in a hospital setting using a qualitative research methodology. Methods: In depth interviews with 10 nurses working at pediatric units were conducted using semi-structured questionnaires, and data were analyzed using a thematic analysis. Results: Main themes were categorized as attributes of nurse-child trust and influencing factors. Attributes of trust can be divided into definition and characteristics of nurse-child trust. Nurses perceived nurse-child trust were not coercive, and changeable mutual relationship needing time and effort, and helpful for child's hospital adaptation and child's participation for care. There existed facilitating factors and interfering factors in developing nurse-child trust. Conclusion: The findings of this study would help nurses who are caring children in a hospital setting re-shape their points of views on 'trust between nurses and children' in day to day practice. It is also hoped that these results contribute to develop nursing guidelines on trust building with children in hospital in future.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate differences in Korean child-rearing practices between the generations of young mothers and grandmothers. Method: The participants were 98 mothers who were 20 to 39 years old and had raised one-year-old child and 103 grandmothers who were over 60 years old and had raised their children in a small city. Data were collected through self-report questionnaire based on the Korean traditional child-rearing practice from Yoo(1986). The data were analyzed using the SPSS Win 10.0 program. Results: Of 37 items in the categories of feeding and weaning, health management and taboo matters, play, and baby celebrations, the grandmothers practiced 13 items (35%) more frequently than the young mothers. However, no generation differences were found in 21 items (57%), and 3 items were practiced more frequently by the young mothers. For the young mothers, there were 15 items (41%) which were practiced over 70%, 7 items (19%) which were practiced less than 30%. Conclusion: It seems that some Korean traditional child-rearing practices were transferred to modern child-rearing practices. Therefore pediatric nurses need to pay attention to traditional child-rearing practices for the best health, growth and development of children.
The nursing space and sanitary space are main living spaces for children in the child care center. The purpose of this study is to examine the characteristics in terms of planning by mainly focusing on the nursing space and sanitary space of the disabled child care center in Japan. Since Japan has cultural backgrounds similar to those of Korea while providing systematic child care centers according to the symptom and grade of disability, it is anticipated that this case study on the disabled child care center in Japan will help establish standards related to disabled child care centers in Korea. To conduct the study in a more efficient way, the case study was divided into the space planning of nursing spaces and sanitary spaces and the installation of sanitary tools and handrails in the disabled child care center. The findings of investigating into actual conditions were analyzed by comparing them with Japanese laws and literary and documentary records relevant to this study. Through this study, it is expected that Korean child care centers, having constantly expanded their quantitative growth, will also improve the qualitative level of their atmospheres so that they may provide more proper conditions even for disabled children to get better used to child care centers in Korea.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to analyze changes of child welfare policies and provide insights based on the collection and classification of newspaper articles. Methods: Articles related to child welfare policies were collected from 1990, during the Kim, Young-sam administration, to May 9, 2022, under the Moon, Jae-in administration. K-Means clustering and keyword Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency analysis were utilized to cluster and analyze newspaper articles with similar themes. Results: The administrations of Kim, Young-sam, Kim, Dae-jung, Roh, Moo-hyun, and Park, Geun-hye were classified into two clusters, and the Lee, Myung-bak and Moon, Jae-in administrations were classified into three clusters. Conclusion: South Korea's child welfare policies have focused on ensuring the safety and healthy development of children through diverse policies initiatives over the years. However, challenges related to child protection and child abuse persist. This requires additional resources and budget allocation. It is important to establish a comprehensive support system for children and families, including comprehensive nursing support.
Purpose: To investigate the health problems and health services in child day care centers. Methods: Data were collected from 115 teachers at 16 child day care centers in Seoul city. A questionnaire was used to collect data, which were analyzed with the SPSS 12.0 program. Results: Most teachers had experienced various child health problems such as colds, hand․foot․mouth diseases, chicken pox, skin injuries, nasal bleeding, vomiting and diarrhea. Furthermore, they even experienced some serious ones including dysentery, measles, asthma and seizures, which demand professional skill. However, there were no registered nurses and most teachers requested that parents take a child home when these health problems happened. Only 31.3% of the child care centers had a teacher with CPR training. Approximately half of the centers kept child health records which included reports on allergic substances, and medical history but only 18.7% of the child care centers offered regular immunizations for the children. Conclusion: Various health problems were found in child day care centers. To maintain the children's health, there is a need to develop and make provisions for health services and programs in child day care centers.

Purpose: This study investigated the parenting experiences of mothers of young children born moderate-to-late preterm (MLPT) in South Korea. Methods: In this qualitative study, semi-structured focus group interviews were conducted with 10 mothers of MLPT children from infancy to preschool age. The interviews were video-recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Results: Four categories resulted from the analysis of parenting experiences of mothers with young MLPT children, as follows: "becoming a mother of an early-born child", "difficulties as the primary caregiver for a high-risk child", "helpful social support, but still a lack of professional support for parenting a high-risk child", and "mothers and children growing together". Conclusion: Mothers of young MLPT children experienced difficulties due to concerns about their child's health, growth and development, and insufficient child-rearing support. Therefore, social support systems should be strengthened and more aggressive nursing strategies should be adopted for mothers of young MLPT children.
Nursing students, as prospective nurses, are expected to act as child abuse reporters and advocates for child targets. Therefore, this study aimed to provide a basis for developing a child abuse prevention education program for nursing students by determining the extent of nursing students' perceived target vulnerability and target advocacy, child rights awareness, and intention to report child abuse, and analyzing the relationships among the variables. This study is a descriptive survey study to identify the effects of target vulnerability, target advocacy, and child rights awareness on intention to report child abuse among 154 nursing students, and the data collection period was from July 3 to July 31, 2023, and the collected data were analyzed using SPSS 25.0 program. As a result of identifying the influential factors on nursing students' intention to report child abuse, child abuse education, championing social justice as a sub-variable of target advocacy, and target vulnerability, the explanatory power of these variables was 35.8%. Based on the results of this study, it is suggested that it is necessary to increase activities through the development and application of simulation education based on actual clinical cases in order to increase nursing students' interest in and education about child abuse.
Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the effects of virtual reality used in maternal-child nursing clinical practicums on nursing students' competencies through a systematic review. Methods: The inclusion criteria were peer-reviewed papers in English or Korean presenting analytic studies of maternal-child nursing practicums using virtual reality. An electronic literature search of the Cochrane Library, CINAHL, EMBASE, ERIC, PubMed, and Research Information Sharing System databases was performed using combinations of the keywords "nursing student," "virtual reality," "augmented reality," "mixed reality," and "virtual simulation" from February 4 to 15, 2022. Quality appraisal was performed using the RoB 2 and ROBINS-I tools for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and non-RCTs, respectively. Results: Of the seven articles identified, the RCT study (n=1) was deemed to have a high risk of bias, with some items indeterminable due to a lack of reported details. Most of the non-RCT studies (n=6) had a moderate or serious risk of bias related to selection and measurement issues. Clinical education using virtual reality had positive effects on knowledge, skills, satisfaction, self-efficacy, and needs improvement; however, it did not affect critical thinking or self-directed learning. Conclusion: This study demonstrated that using virtual reality for maternal-child nursing clinical practicums had educational effects on a variety of students' competencies. Considering the challenges of providing direct care in clinical practicums, virtual reality can be a viable tool that supplements maternal-child nursing experience. Greater rigor and fuller reporting of study details are required for future research.
