  • Maternal interaction behavior, language input and children's language of 34 multicultural families were compared with those of ordinary families. MLU's of multicultural mothers and their children were shorter than those of ordinary Korean mothers and children. Positive maternal interaction behaviors of multicultural mothers were significantly lower than those of ordinary mothers. Correlational analyses revealed that there were positive correlations among maternal interaction behaviors, mother's MLU and children' MLU in multicultural families. However, there were no such correlations in ordinary families. Findings suggest language education and support for multicultural mothers be an effective policy for their children's language development.

  • This study examined the effect of story dictation and dramatization on children's story construction and decontextualized language. For 12 weeks, the 22 five-year-old children in the experimental group participated in story dictation and dramatization activities while another 22 same-age children participated only in story dictation. The instruments were the children's Decontextualized Language Test(Foley, 1992) and children's Story Analysis(Knipping, 1987), revised to fit Korean grammar. Story dictation and dramatization facilitated high level story construction by children: it raised levels of story coherence and narrative form. Story dictation and dramatization also enhanced decontextualized language of children, raising their use of decontextualized language on a picture description task.

  • This study examined the effects of Korean language levels and years of residence in Korea of marriage-immigrant mothers on their parenting behaviors. It also examined the mediating roles of parenting knowledge and acculturation patterns. To do this, this paper made use of data collected from 130 mothers participating in Multicultural Family Support Centers. The main findings are as follows. First, parenting knowledge did not mediate Korean language levels as well as years of residence in Korea and parenting behaviors. Second, years of residence in Korea indirectly affected parenting behaviors through the acculturation patterns of integration and assimilation but did not appear to do so directly. Third, Korean language levels did not have a linear relationship with acculturation. Fourth, higher Korean language levels were correlated with higher levels of overprotection of children.

  • This study investigated the effects on young children's vocabulary and reading ability of the comprehensive language-teaching program using web-based picture books. The comprehensive language program was put into operation for 9 weeks with a classroom teacher who had in-service training for this program. The language course for the 23 children in the control group consisted only of ordinary language activities using teacher-made picture cards. Test results analyzed by t-test showed that the 25 children in the experimental group gained more than the control group on reading attitude including the concept of reading, accuracy, verbal expression, participation, contents and originality. Also, the ability to read a fairy tale aloud increased in the experimental group.

  • This study aims to examine the relationship between mothers' attachment levels, types of verbal control, and infants' language development. The selected participants comprised 224 infants, aged 24-35 months and their mothers (224) at 25 long day care centers located Goyang-si, Gimpo-si in Gyeonggi-do, Incheon and Seoul. The major findings of this study were as follows. First, there were significant differences in mothers' attachment levels, types of verbal control, and infants' language development depending on the mothers' employment status. Secondly, to assess the relative influences of two variables which were significantly associated with infants' language development, the sociodemographic variables of mothers and infants, including infants' age and mothers' employment status, were controlled in order to conduct hierarchical regression analysis. The results revealed that imperative-oriented verbal controls, person-oriented verbal controls, and contact seeking all influenced infants' overall language development.

The participants were 51 boys and 64 girls who were five years old in Jeonrabukdo. The results were as follows. First, in the case of the boys, there was significant relationship between their self concept of language, the parent relationship and an intimate teacher-child relationship. The self-concept of body and the teacher-child relationship of conflict were positively correlated. In the case of the girls, there were significant relationships between the self concept of body, language, the parent relationship, friends' relationship and the general and intimate teacher-child self-concept. The self-concept of mathematics and conflictive teacher-child relation were positively correlated. Second, there were significant relationships among the sub variable of leadership and an intimate teacher-child relationship. However, prosocial leadership, directedness and a conflictive teacher-child relationship were negatively correlated in the case of the boys. Third, the teacher-child relationship was affected by leadership more than the self concept, and prosocial leadership was highly related in boys and girls.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of picture book reading intervention activities on language development of low-income children. The subjects were 60 children in low-income families, aged 5, selected from 24 child care centers located in three cities nearby Seoul, South Korea. The experimental group had received intervention program for 8 weeks, two days a week, and three teachers conducted the intervention program for 30 to 40 minutes for each session. The intervention program was administered to the children with picture book reading activities in the first session, followed by providing more extensive activities in the second session. Afterwards, the study allowed the children to take one picture book to read at home. To evaluate the effect of the picture book reading intervention program, this study utilized instruments called the Preschool Receptive-Expressive Language Scale and the Concepts about Print. Significant differences found between the two groups. The experimental group showed higher scores compared with the control group in the post-test of expressive language development. Also, children in the experimental group showed a significant increase in the concepts about print after the intervention program was administered. In conclusion, findings indicate several changes in positive outcomes after implementation of the picture book reading intervention program.

  • Developmental language disorder is the most common developmental disability in childhood, occurring in 5-8% of preschool children. Children learn language in early childhood, and later they use language to learn. Children with language disorders are at increased risk for difficulties with reading and written language when they enter school. These problems often persist through adolescence or adulthood. Early intervention may prevent the more serious consequences of later academic problems, including learning disabilities. A child's performance in specific speech and language areas, such as phonological ability, vocabulary comprehension, and grammatical usage, is measured objectively using the most recently standardized, norm-referenced tests for a particular age group. Observation and qualitative analysis of a child's performance supplement objective test results are essential for making a diagnosis and devising a treatment plan. Emphasis on the team approach system in the evaluation of children with speech and language impairments has been increasing. Evidence-based therapeutic interventions with short-term, long-term, and functional outcome goals should be applied, because there are many examples of controversial practices that have not been validated in large, controlled trials. Following treatment intervention, periodic follow-up monitoring by a doctor is also important. In addition, a systematized national health policy for children with speech and language disorders should be provided.

  • This study investigated aspects of caregiver's input relating to the early development of nouns and verbs. Subjects were 34 Korean-Chinese children in Yanji, China. At 1 year of age each child's spontaneous speech during interaction with his/her caregiver was videotaped for about 30 minutes. The children's spontaneous utterances were transcribed and coded on the lexical level(nouns and verbs) and the pragmatic level. Children's speech was recorded, transcribed and coded again at 2 years of age. Results showed that children used more verbs when they were older; there were no differences between the two ages in mother's pragmatic utterances but when they were two-years-old children used more actionoriented utterances and object-described utterances. Mother's input was related to children's pragmatic utterances.

  • This study explored variables related to Korean language education for preschool children with multicultural family backgrounds. Participants were 21 Korean language teachers and 14 women who immigrated from China, Japan, Mongolia, Philippines, and Vietnam to marry Korean men. They were mothers of children 2 to 7 years of age and had lived in Korea an average of five years. Mean age of mothers was 37(range of 30 to 43). Half had college and none had less then middle school education. They were interviewed with a series of semi-structured questionnaires. The children were reported to have a low level of vocabulary and articulation because their mothers could not provide fruitful oral language experiences. Supporting systems including family literacy were discussed.
