  • Hydrogen energy id the 2nd clean energy able to be produced from the abundant resources, and the products of combustion or reaction do not spread an environmental pollution. Also, the hydrogen is the chemical media easily to transport and storage as energy source. The hydrogen production technology using by water splitting through electrolysis could be usable as a permanent renewable energy system without the environmental impact. The key technology of high temperature steam electrolysis is the development of an electrolyte rapidly to conduct an oxygen or proton ion decomposed from water. Subsequently, the important technology is to keep the joining technology of an electrolyte membrane and electrode materials to affect into the current efficiency.

  • In this study, we developed a liquid crystal (LC)-based optical sensor for monitoring enzymatic activity through orientational changes in liquid crystals (LCs) coupled to the properties of a poly-${\small{L}}$-lysine (PLL)-based polymeric membrane. We prepared a PLL-based polymeric membrane at the planar interface between the thermotropic liquid crystal and aqueous phases. The PLL-based polymeric membrane was obtained by contacting the PLL solution with water immiscible LCs, 4-cyano-4'-pentyl-biphenyl (5CB) doped with adipoyl chloride. We then investigated the membrane properties by examining the permeability of the membrane to phospholipids, 1,2-didodecanoyl-rac-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DLPC). The permeability of the membrane to transport phospholipids was monitored through the orientational transition of 5CB in contact with the dispersions of DLPC. Since trypsin can enzymatically catalyze the hydrolysis of PLL, we incubated an aqueous trypsin solution with the membrane for 2 h at room temperature to cause an increase in the permeability of the polymeric membrane to DLPC. As a result, a bright to dark optical shift of LCs was observed, which implied that an enzymatic reaction between trypsin and PLL-based membrane occurred. Two control experiments using chymotrypsin and bovine serum albumin (BSA) revealed no sign of improved permeability based on the orientational transition of LCs.

  • Biological nitrogen fixation is an important process for academic and industrial aspects. This review will briefly compare industrial and biological nitrogen fixation and cover the characteristics of biological nitrogen fixation studied in Azotobacter vinelandii. Various organisms can carry out biological nitrogen fixation and recently the researches on the reaction mechanism were concentrated on the free-living microorganism, A. vinelandii. Nitrogen fixation, which transforms atmospheric $N_2$ into ammonia, is chemically a reduction reaction requiring electron donation. Nitrogenase, the biological nitrgen fixer, accepts electrons from biological electron donors, and transfers them to the active site, FeMo-cofactor, through $Fe_4S_4$ cluster in Fe protein and P-cluster in MoFe protein. The electron transport and the proton transport are very important processes in the nitrogenase catalysis to understand its reaction mechanism, and the interactions between FeMo-cofactor and nitrogen molecule are at the center of biological nitrogen fixation mechanism. Spectroscopic studies including protein X-ray crystallography, EPR and $M{\ddot{o}}ssbauer$, biochemical approaches including substrate and inhibitor interactions as well as site-directed mutation study, and chemical approach to synthesize the FeMo-cofactor model compounds were used for biological nitrogen fixation study. Recent research results from these area were presented, and finally, a new nitrogenase reaction mechanism will be proposed based on the various research results.

  • Anion exchange membranes can be used for reverse electrodialysis for electric energy generation, and capacitive deionization for water purification, as well as electrodialysis for desalination. In this study, anion exchange membranes of poly((vinylbenzyl) trimethylammonium chloride-2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate)/poly(vinyl alcohol) were prepared through the polymerization of (vinylbenzyl)trimethylammonium chloride and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate in aqueous poly(vinyl alcohol) solutions, esterification with glutaric acid, and cross-linking reaction with glutaraldehyde. We investigated electrochemical properties for the anion exchange membranes prepared according to experimental conditions. Ion exchange capacity and electrical resistance for the membranes were changed with a variation in the monomer ratio in polymerization. Water uptake and conductivity for the membranes decreased with an increase in the content of glutaric acid in esterification. The change in the time of crosslinking reaction with the formed film and glutaraldehyde affected electrochemical properties such as water uptake, conductivity, or transport number for the membranes. Chronopotentiometry and limiting current density for the anion exchange membranes prepared were measured.

  • The characteristics of flame propagation in inert particle-laden $H_2$/Air premixed gas are numerically investigated on this study. The 2nd order TVD scheme is applied to numerical analysis of governing equations and multi-step chemical reaction model and detailed transport properties are sued to solve chemical reaction terms. Radiation heat transfer is computed by applying the finite volume method to a radiative transfer equation. The burning velocities against the mole fractions of hydrogen agree well with results performed by different workers. The inert particles play significant roles in the flame propagation on account of momentum and heat transfer between gas and particles. Gas temperature, pressure and flame propagation speed are decreased as the loading ratio of particle is increased. Also the products behind flame zone contain lots of water vapor whose absorption coefficient is much larger than that of unburned gas. Thus, the radiation effect of gas and particles must be considered simultaneously for the flame propagation in a mixture of $H_2$/Air and inert particles. As a result, it is founded that because the water vapor emits much radiation and this emitted radiation is released at boundaries as radiant heat loss as well as reabsorbed by gas and particles, flame propagation speed and flame structure are altered with radiation effect.

  • We made $P_2O_5-SiO_2$ films on silicon for integrated optics application by low pressure chemical vapor deposition using TEOS (tetraethylorthosilicate) and TMPite (trimethylphosphite) and studied the deposition characteristics. The activation energy of the reaction was changed from 54.6 kcal/mole to 39.2 kcal/mole by incorporating the TMPite into the reaction of TEOS. The deposition rate and the P concentration of films increased in proportion to the flow of TMPite. As the deposition temperature increased, the deposition rate of the films increased but the P concentration decreased. The fabricated films showed the increase of refractive index of 0.0019 per 1 wt% of P concentration. The nonuniformity of films was ${\pm}$7% in thickness and ${\pm}$0.5wt% in P concentration and we showed this'nonuniformity is due to the nonuniform transport of TMPite. The films of more than 10wt% P concentration developed phosphoric acid on its surface when exposed to air for long time.

  • Spiro-type orange phosphorescent host materials, 9-diphenylphosphine oxide-spiro[fluorene-7,9'-benzofluorene] (OPH-1P) and 5-diphenylphosphine oxide-spiro[fluorene-7,9'-benzofluorene] (OPH-2P) were successfully prepared by a lithiation reaction followed by a phosphination reaction with diphenylphosphinic chloride. The EL characteristics of OPH-1P and OPH-2P as orange host materials doped with iridium(III) bis(2-phenylquinoline)acetylacetonate ($Ir(pq)_2acac$) were evaluated. The electroluminescence spectra of the ITO (150 nm)/DNTPD (60 nm)/NPB (30 nm)/OPH-1P or OPH-2P: $Ir(pq)_2acac$ (30 nm)/BCP (5 nm)/$Alq_3$ (20 nm)/LiF (1 nm)/Al (200 nm) devices show a narrow emission band with a full width at half maximum of 75 nm and $\lambda_{max}$ = 596 nm. The device obtained from OPH-1P doped with 3% $Ir(pq)_2acac$ showed an orange color purity of (0.580, 0.385) and an efficiency of (14 cd/A at 7.0 V). The ability of the OPH-P series to combine a high triple energy with a low operating voltage is attributed to the inductive effect of the P=O moieties and subsequent energy lowering of the LUMO, resulting in the enhancement of both the electron injection and transport in the device. The overall result is a device with an EQE > 8% at high brightness, but operating voltage of less than 6.4 V, as compared to the literature voltages of ~10 V.

  • No investigation has yet been accomplished to screen the boron-doped effects on vanadium based metal membranes. The synthesis, hydrogen permeation properties and chemical stability of a novel Pd-coated $V_{99.8}B_{0.2}$ alloy membrane are presented in this report. Hydrogen permeation experiments have been performed to investigate the hydrogen transport properties through the Pd-coated $V_{99.8}B_{0.2}$ alloy membrane in the absolute pressure range 1.0~3.0 bar under pure hydrogen, hydrogen-carbon dioxide gas mixture at $400^{\circ}C$. The maximum hydrogen permeation flux was $48.5mL/min/cm^2$ for a 0.5 mm thick membrane under pure hydrogen. This results offer new direction in the synthesis of novel non-Palladium-based metal membranes for hydrogen separation in water-gas shift reaction.

  • To investigate the rate-determining step of nickel, cobalt and copper electrowinning, experiments were conducted by varying the electrolyte temperature and agitation speed using a rotating disc electrode. Analyzing the rate-determining step by calculating the activation energy in the electrowinning process, it was found that nickel electrowinning is controlled by a mixed mechanism (partly by chemical reaction and partly by mass transport), cobalt is controlled by chemical reaction, and copper is controlled by mass transfer. Electrowinning of nickel, cobalt and copper was performed by varying the electrolyte temperature and agitation speed, and the comparison of the current efficiencies was used the determine the rate-determining step.

  • We investigated the properties of impregnated activated carbons, a commercial adsorbent for the individual protection equipment, and examined CO adsorption and oxidation to $CO_2$. The surface area, pore volume and pore size were measured for four commercial samples using Brunauer-Emmett-Teller/Barrett-Joyner-Halenda (BET/BJH), and atomic compositions of the sample surface were analyzed based on SEM/EDS and XPS. Impregnated activated carbons containing Mn and Cu for fire showed the catalytic CO oxidation to $CO_2$ with a high catalytic activity (up to 99% $CO_2$ yield), followed by the CO adsorption at an initial reaction time. On the other hand, C: for chemical biologial and radiological (CBR) samples, not including Mn, showed a lower CO conversion to $CO_2$ (up to 60% yield) compared to that of fire samples. It was also found that a heat-treated activated carbon has a higher removal capacity both for CO and $CO_2$ at room temperature than that of untreated carbon, which was probably due to the impurity removal in pores resulted in a detection-delay about 30 min.
