  • The principle and applications of quartz crystal sensors based on the three basic concepts for mass, viscosity, and viscoelastic changes are reviewed. In the general discussion the basic principle of quartz crystal and realization of a resonant frequency-resonant resistance diagram are described in detail. As examples of their applications, gas sensing with a carbon-coated quartz crystal, determination of the blood coagulation factor, an electrochemical analysis and crystallization analysis are reported. The possibility of developing new biosensors and chemical sensors is discussed on the basis of these results.

  • Tuning of electro-optical properties of nano-structured $SnO_2:Ga$ powders in a micro drop fluidized reactor (MDFR) was highly effective to enhance the activities of powders to be used as sensor materials. The tuning was conducted continuously in a facile one-step process during the formation of powders. The microscopic hydrodynamic forces affected the band gap structure and charge transfer of $SnO_2:Ga$ powders through the oxygen and interfacial tin vacancies by providing plausible pyro-hydraulic conditions, which resulted in the decrease in the electrical resistance of the materials. The analyses of room-temperature photoluminescence (PL) spectra and FT-IR exhibited that the tuning could improve the surface activities of $SnO_2:Ga$ powders by adjusting the excitation as well as separation of electrons and holes, thus maximizing the oxygen vacancies at the surface of the powders. The scheme of photocatalytic mechanism of $SnO_2:Ga$ powders was also discussed.

  • Production of ribosomally synthesized antimicrobial peptides usually referred to as bacteriocins is an inducible trait in several gram positive bacteria, particularly in those belonging to the group of lactic acid bacteria. In many of these organisms, production of bacteriocins is inducible and induction requires secretion and extracellular accumulation of peptides that act as chemical messengers and trigger bacteriocin production. These inducer peptides are often referred to as autoinducers and are believed to permit a quorum sensing-based regulation of bacteriocin production. Notably, the peptides acting as autoinducers are dedicated peptides with or without antimicrobial activity or the bacteriocins themselves. The autoinducer-dependent induction of bacteriocin production requires histidine protein kinases and response regulator proteins of two-component signal transduction systems. The current working model for the regulation of class II bacteriocin production in lactic acid bacteria and the most relevant direct and indirect pieces of evidence supporting the model are discussed in this minireview.

  • In this study, the rise throughput and the stability in fabrication of device can be obtained by applying of CMP process to STI structure in 0.l8um semiconductor device. Through reverse moat pattern process, reduced moat density at high moat density, STI CMP process with low selectivity could be to fit polish uniformity between low moat density and high moat density. Because this reason, in-situ motor current end point detection method is not fit to the current EPD technology with the reverse moat pattern. But we use HSS without reverse moat pattern on STI CMP and take end point current sensing signal.[1] To analyze sensing signal and test extracted signal, we can to adjust wafer difference within $110{\AA}$.

  • The rise throughput and the stability in fabrication of device can be obtained by applying of CMP process to STI structure in 0.18um semiconductor device. To employ in STI CMP, the reverse moat process has been added thus the process became complex and the defects were seriously increased. Removal rates of each thin films in STi CMP was not equal hence the devices must to be effected, that is, the damage was occured in the device dimension in the case of excessive CMP process and the nitride film was remained on the device dimension in the case of insufficient CMP process than these defects affect the device characteristics. We studied the current sensing method in STI-CMP with the reverse moat pattern.

  • Surface plasmon resonance(SPR) has been widely studied for biological and chemical sensing applications. The present study conducts numerical simulation for the single and bimetallic layer SPR configurations by using the multiple beam interference matrix(MBIM) method to investigate the influence of wave interference and complex refractive indices of materials on optical characteristics such as reflectance and optical phase shift which are used for sensing. First, calculated reflectances are compared with experimental data for validation. In addition, in the single film structures this study finds out the appropriate film thicknesses with minimum reflectance for cases of gold film and silver film. For a bimetallic silver-gold film structure, in particular, the bimetallic film thicknesses that has the minimum reflectance are found 36 nm for silver and 5 nm for gold. From the results, the use of phase shift would be useful compared to reflectance in determining the SPR configuration because the phase shift becomes more sensitive than reflectance.

  • Nitrogen-Vacancy (NV) center in diamond has been an emerging versatile tool for quantum sensing applications. Amongst various applications, nano-scale nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) using a single or ensemble NV centers has demonstrated promising results, opening possibility of a single molecule NMR for its chemical structural studies or multi-nuclear spin spectroscopy for quantum information science. However, there is a key challenge, which limited the spectral resolution of NMR detection using NV centers; the interrogation duration for NV-NMR detection technique has been limited by the NV sensor spin lifetime (T1 ~ 3ms), which is orders of magnitude shorter than the coherence times of nuclear spins in bulk liquid samples (T2 ~ 1s) or intrinsic 13C nuclear spins in diamond. Recent studies have shown that quantum memory technique or synchronized readout detection technique can further narrow down the spectral linewidth of NMR signal. In this short review paper, we overview basic concepts of nanoscale NMR using NV centers, and introduce further developments in high spectral resolution NV NMR studies.

  • Carbon nanotubes(CNTs) were synthesized by thermal chemical vapor deposition(CVD) method. To fabricate CNT gas sensor, catalyst metal layer was deposited on microstructure. The CNT gas detecting layer was grown by thermal CVD method on the catalyst metal layer. In order to investigate the gas sensing characteristics of the fabricated CNT gas sensor, it was exposed in NO$_2$ gas and sensitivity, response, and recovery time were measured. As the result, this sensor has better reproductibility and faster recovery time than another CNT gas sensors.

  • E. coli TG1 pBS TOM Green was cultured to produce toluene-o-monooxygenase (TOM). A biosensor system was successfully constructed using purified TOM to effectively detect trichloroethene (TCE) and tetrachloroethene (PCE), which represent some of the major contaminants in groundwater and soil. In order to utilize TOM as a sensor, NADH, a biological oxidizer, was replaced with hydrogen peroxide which is a chemical oxidizing agent. A three-layered sandwich-type sensing tip was fabricated on the outside of the hydrophilic polyvinylidene fluoride membrane. TCE and PCE were applied to the sensor and the hydrogen ions were measured by a fiber optic fluorometer using fluoresceinamine. Calibration curves were obtained for TCE and PCE in the concentration range of 0.2-100 mg/l, and the detection limit of the system was $10{\mu}g/l$ for TCE and PCE.

  • A method for the ratiometric pH sensing using LysoSensor DND-192 is presented in this paper. It works in the physiological pH range. It is based on the use of two fluorophores which differ significantly in their lifetimes. As the discrimination of their emissions is performed through two different frequencies, this method can allow significant overlap of the emission spectra. A simple long-pass filter, or a combination of long-and short-pass filters, was used instead of narrow-bandpass devices. Importantly, the measurements were carried out under strong ambient light. The method could be used in a wide variety of applications, such as intracellular measurements, microscopy, bioprocess monitoring, etc.
