  • A double-layer optical sensing membrane has been fabricated to measure the concentration of dissolved oxygen (DO) and pH value simultaneously. (tris(4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline (Rudpp) ruthenium(II)) as a DO sensitive dye has been mixed in the methyl trimethoxy silane (MTMS) sol-gel solution and coated onto one well in a 24-well microtiter plate. On the DO-sensing layer the GA (3-glycidoxypropyl trimethoxy silane (GPTMS), 3-aminopropyl trimethoxy silane (APTMS)) sol-gel solution mixed with 8-hydroxypyrene-1,3,6-trisulfonic acid trisodium salt (HPTS) has been coated and used to measure pH values. The double-layer sensing membrane was affected by ionic strength and temperature. The double-layer sensing membrane for DO and pH has been applied to online monitor in microorganism cultivation processes and showed a good performance.

  • The polypyrrole and polyaniline thin film sensors which were made by chemical polymerization were employed to detect ethanol gas. With a single sensor element we can obtain characteristic patterns of behaviour across a very wide frequency range when measuring either resistance or capacitance. Impedance spectroscopy was employed to study the gas sensing behavior of both capacitance and resistance based sensors with conducting polymer as the active sensing element.

  • Polyacrylonitrile/pitch nanofibers were prepared by electrospinning as a precursor for a gas sensor material. Pitch nanofibers were properly fabricated by incorporating polyacrylonitrile as an electrospinning supplement component. Polyacrylonitrile/pitch nanofibers were activated with steam at various temperatures followed by subsequent carbonization to make carbon nanofibers with a highly conductive graphitic structure. Steam activation was effective in facilitating gas adsorption onto the carbon nanofibers due to the increased surface area. The carbon nanofibers activated at $800^{\circ}C$ had a larger surface area and a lower micro pore fraction resulting in a higher variation in electrical resistance for improved CO gas sensing properties.

  • In this paper a method for remotely-sensed assessment of eutrophication was experimented. The water samples were collected for analysis of COD (chemical oxygen demand) and nutrients concentration, and the remote sensing reflectance data at the sampling points were synchronously measured using above-water method in two cruises, which were conducted in the Pearl River Estuary in January 2003 and January 2004 respectively. Based on the in-situ data the local algorithms for estimation of concentration of nutrients (P and N) and COD were developed by Partial Least Squares (PLS) regression. The algorithms were then applied to atmospheric-corrected SeaWiFS data and the COD and nutrients concentration in Pearl River Estuary were estimated. And then the assessment of eutrophication was carried out by comparison of the estimated nutrients and COD value with the water quality standard. The results show that the whole estuary is seriously in eutrophication.

  • We designed the artificial olfactory sensing system (Electronic Nose) using MOS type sensor array fur recognizing and analyzing odour. The response of individual sensors of sensor array, each processing a slightly different response towards the sample volatiles, can provide enough information to discriminate between sample odours. In this paper, we applied clustering algorithm for dimension reduction, such as linear projection mapping (PCA method), nonlinear mapping (Sammon mapping method) and the combination of PCA and Sammon mapping having a better discriminating ability. The odours used are VOC (Volatile chemical compound) and Toxic gases.

  • Sensing properties of $\alpha$-Fe2O3 thin film to reducing gases such as CHx and CO were systematically examined after deposition on Al2O3 substrate by PECVD(Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition)technique. Microstructure of deposited $\alpha$-Fe2O3 thin film showed the porous island structure. This specimen was annealed at 450, 550, $650^{\circ}C$ to enhance the gas sensing properties and investigated in terms of CO and C4H10 concentration from 500ppm to 3,000 ppm at operating temperature of 35$0^{\circ}C$ The gas sensitivity(%) to C4H10 measured at the operating temperature of 35$0^{\circ}C$ was 98.24 (highest sensitivity) 69.51 to CO and 2% to CH4 respectviely.

  • This paper discussed and analyzed results of different classification algorithms for land use classification in arid and semiarid areas using CBERS-1 image, which in case of our study is Shihezi Municipality, Xinjiang Province. Three types of classifiers are included in our experiment, including the Maximum Likelihood classifier, BP neural network classifier and Fuzzy-ARTMAP neural network classifier. The classification results showed that the classification accuracy of Fuzzy-ARTMAP was the best among three classifiers, increased by 10.69% and 6.84% than Maximum likelihood and BP neural network, respectively. Meanwhile, the result also confirmed the practicability of CBERS-1 image in land use survey.

  • GaN-based sensors have been widely investigated thanks to its potential in detecting the presence of hydrogen. In this study, we fabricated hydrogen gas sensors with AlGaN/GaN heterojunction and investigated how the sensing performance to be affected by SiN surface passivation. The gas sensor employed a high electron mobility transistors (HEMTs) with 30 nm platinum catalyst as a gate to detect the hydrogen presence. SiN layer was deposited by inductively-coupled chemical vapor deposition as post-passivation. The sensors with SiN passivation exhibited hydrogen sensing characteristics with various gas flow rates and concentrations of hydrogen in inert background gas at $200^{\circ}C$ similar to the ones without passivation. Aside from quick response time for both sensors, there are differences in sensitivity and recovery time because of the existence of the passivation layer. The results also confirmed the dependence of sensing performance on gas flow rate and gas concentration.

  • SAN/$BMIPF_6$ nanofibers were fabricated by an electrospinning process and used as chemiresistors for sensing alcohol vapours. A hydrophobic and air-stable ionic liquid, $BMIPF_6$, was used to impart electrical conductivity to insulating SAN nanofibers. The effects of $BMIPF_6$ addition on the morphology of the nanofibers were explained in terms of surface tension, viscosity and conductivity. After exposing the SAN/$BMIPF_6$ nanofibers collected on an interdigitated electrode to alcohol vapours (ethanol, 1-propanol and 1-butanol), the resistance of the nanofibers decreased due to adsorption of alcohol molecules. The electrospun SAN/$BMIPF_6$ nanofibers sensor exhibited good sensitivity and reproducibility.
