  • It is a challenging task to apply large detailed chemical mechanisms of fuel oxidation in simulation of complex combustion phenomena. There exist a few systematic methodologies to reduce detailed chemical mechanisms to smaller sizes involving less computational load. This research work concerns generation of a skeletal chemical mechanism by a directed relation graph with specified accuracy requirement. Two sequential stages for mechanism reduction are followed in a perfectly stirred reactor(PSR) for high temperature chemistry and to consider the autoignition delay time for low and high temperature chemistry. Reduction was performed for the detailed chemical mechanism of n-heptane consisting of 561 species and 2539 elementary reaction steps. Validation results show acceptable agreement for the autoignition delay time and the PSR calculation in wide parametric ranges of pressure, temperature and equivalence ratio.

  • Polymer-clay nanocomposites, a novel organic-inorganic hybrid, attract much attention from both scientific fields and engineering fields due to their balanced improvements in mechanical properties as well as diffusion behaviors, including flame-retarding and barrier properties, with small amounts of clay. Preparation of polymer-clay nanocomposites, summarized as a process for uniform dispersion of hydrophilic layered clays in hydrophobic polymer matrixes, includes several technologies and scientific phenomena, such as surface-modifications of clay layers, physical properties of clays in liquids and dried states, polymer synthesis, polymer rheology, behaviors of polymer solutions/or monomers in the confined geometry, mechanical properties of polymers and clays. To comprehend complicated physical/chemical phenomena involved in the fabrication of nanocomposites, we reviewed physical properties of clays, structures of clays in nanocomposites, characterization of nanocomposites, the relation between morphology and physical property of nanocomposites, surveyed recent research trends, and then suggested a few strategies or methods for fabrication of nanocomposites reflecting future research directions.

  • Numerical analysis of the transport phenomena in an inductively coupled plasma reactor was conducted with two-dimensional axisymmetric model including the electromagnetic field model, electron and species density models. The spatial distribution of the charged species in the ion flux to the wafer have been calculated to examine the influence of the process conditions including antenna and reactor geometry. The antenna radius had a significant influence on the plasma state and axial ion flux distribution.

  • Antiphase character of cross peaks in long-range COSY is modulated by changing the fixed delay time and used to assign diastereotopic methylene protons on rigid systems which could produce unpredictable NOE phenomena because of complicate coupling spins.

  • Relations between fitted parameters for photoionization spectra both below and above the thresholds in the systems involving 3 channels are obtained using phase-shifted version of the multichannel quantum-defect theory. Analytical continuation of the photoionization cross sections in the form of ${\langle}{\sigma}_{below}{\rangle}_{v_{below}}={\sigma}_{above}$ examined using several representations.

  • Hydrogel membranes were prepared by copolymerizing 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone (VP) in the presence of the solvent and the crosslinker tetraethyleneglycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA). By changing the monomer composition and the crosslinker content, different membranes were synthesized. Using these membranes, relative permeabilities and distribution coefficients for amides including urea were measured. The water contents in membrane were also measured. On the basis of solute-membrane matrix interaction, the results were interpreted.

  • Ultraviolet spectra of 5-and 6-uracilyl compounds which contain conjugated double bonds were obtained and their characteristic phenomena were examined. 5-Formyluracil and 6-methyl-5-formyluracil showed bathochromic shifts which should be expected from a conjugated carbonyl compound. 6-Formyluracil did not show any shift in absorbing wavelength. 5-and 6-uracilylacrylic acid derivatives, on the other hand, showed absorption at similar wavelengths, indicating the presence of a hexatriene chromophore. The ratio of ${\Delta}ν/J$ in nuclear magnetic resonance spectra of those compounds decreased drastically as the acrylic acids or esters were converted into amides.
