To investigate antioxidant activity of the culture broth from submerged culture of Tremella fuciformis, we preferentially analyzed the chemical composition of culture broth, which was mainly composed of carbohydrate (296.39 mg/g) and protein (9.24 mg/g), respectively. Also, contents of polyphenols, flavonoids and flavonols were 16.63 mg/g, 9.19 mg/g and 83.74 ${\mu}/g$, respectively. Next, we examined the scavenging abilities on DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) radical, ABTS (2,2-azino-bis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) radical, the reducing power, and chelating ability on ferrous ions. All antioxidant activities of the culture broth were increased in proportion to its concentrations. The $IC_{50}$ values were in order as follows ABTS radical scavenging activity < OPPH radical scavenging activity < chelating power. Accordingly, these results suggest that pharmacological function of T. fuciformis might be due to, at least partially, their protective effects against oxidation and the culture broth of T. fuciformis was free radical inhibitors or scavengers at low concentration, involving possibly in termination of free radical reaction as primary antioxidants.
This study has been performed to identify the phenolic contents and antioxidant properties of methanol and ethanol extracts of young Camellia leaves in Jeju. Total polyphenol and flavonoid contents were 74.9 and 46.1 mg gallic acid equivalent/100 g, and 30.6 and 21.4 mg RE/100 g in the methanol and ethanol extracts, respectively. Based on $IC_{50}$ values, both extracts were also found to possess potent scavenging capacities of 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl, nitric oxide and superoxide anion radicals, and ferrous ion chelating and reducing power activities. These results showed that young Camellia leaves is a good antioxidant source and holds promise as a natural ingredient in functional food and pharmaceutical supplement.
Effects of various formulation factors using $L_8$ orthogonal arrays with the stability of doxorubicin hydrochloride injections(DHls) were investigated. The degradation of DHI may be occured by pH, temperature, light and metal ions. It is known that DHI should be stored on refrigerated condition of $4{\sim}8^{\circ}C$ because of its unstability on the room temperature. The employed factors were sodium chloride as isotonic solution, sodium bisulfite or sodium pyrosulfite as an antioxidant, disodium edetate as a chelating agent, methyl parahydroxybenzoate as a dissolution time shortening agent, and hydrochloric acid or citric acid as a pH adjusting agent at $22^{\circ}C$. From the results of $L_8$ orthogonal arrays, an optimal formula, including sodium chloride, disodium edetate, sodium bisulfite and hydrochloric acid, was obtained and the shelf-life of the formula was determined as 560 days approximately.

A major problem of nuclear energy is the production of radioactive wastes. Needs for more environmentally favorable method to decontaminate radioactive contaminants make the use of liqui $d^ercritical $CO_2$ as a solvent medium. In removing radioactive metallic contaminants under $CO_2$ solvent, two methods - use of chelating ligands and that of water in $CO_2$ emulsion-are possible. In the chelating ligand method, a combination of ligands that can make synergistic effects seems important. We discuss about the properties of microemulsion formed by F-AOT and that by non-ionic surfactant. By adding acid in water core, decontamination of metallic parts, soils were possible. The rate of metal surface dissolution to the microemulsion solution was measured by QCM. The possibility of recovering the surfactants after use is also mentioned.ed.
The antioxidant properties of water extracted polysaccharides (PW), 1%(w/v) NaOH extracted polysaccharides (PN1), and 5%(w/v) NaOH extracted polysaccharides (PN5) were assessed in this paper. PW showed good capability of scavenging $H_2O_2$, anti-lipid peroxidation, reduction power, and scavenging 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH). The maximum values were all observed at the dose of 1 mg/mL sample. As far as the antioxidant activities of PN1 were concerned, the capability of scavenging superoxide radical, chelating metal, and total antioxidation showed higher than those of PN5. When polysaccharide concentration was 1 mg/mL, the 3 index described above were attached 71.8%, 51.6%, and $446.3{\mu}M$ Trolox equivalent, respectively. With respect to PN5, higher capabilities of scavenging hydroxyl free radicals were obtained while the peak of 84.8% was observed at the concentration of 1.0 mg/mL. Moreover, the concentration-dependent influences were characterized in all cases.
Hydrogen-donating capacity, scavenging activity of reactive oxygen including superoxide anion radical and hydrogen peroxide, metal-chelating activity, and reducing power of garlic extracts were investigated. All tested garlic extracts exhibited in vitro antioxidant activities, with Uiseong extract showing highest hydrogen-donating and hydrogen peroxide-scavenging activities, and reducing power, followed by Seosan and Samchek extracts, in proportion to total thiosulfinate contents. Higher scavenging activity of superoxide anion radical was observed in Uiseong than Seosan and Samchek extracts. Metal-chelating activity increased in order of Uiseong < Seosan < Samchek, showing inverse relations to total thiosulfinate content. Garlic extracts of Uiseong and Seosan showed weak prooxidant activities and that of Samchek showed strong antioxidant activity against $Cu^{+2}$-induced human LDL oxidation. Protective effects on peroxyl and hydroxyl radical-induced DNA strand damages were observed in all tested garlic cloves. These results indicate growing conditions of garlic cloves affect total thiosulfinate content and antioxidant activities.
Antioxidative and free radical scavenging properties of different stem extracts of Euphorbia trigona were evaluated and correlated with its total phenolic content. Aqueous, acetone and methanolic extracts of shade dried stem were obtained and were concentrated in vacuo. The antioxidant and free radical scavenging activities of stem extracts was determined by 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging assay, reducing power assay, deoxyribose degradation assay and $Fe^{2+}$ chelating assay. Total phenolic contents (TPC) were evaluated using Folin-Ciocalteu reagent. The results confirmed that the plant is a rich source of polyphenolic compounds which are invariably higher compared to other herbs. All extracts showed TPC in the range of 146.6 - 168.6 mg/g gallic acid equivalents at $300{\mu}g/ml$ of extract. Among the three extracts ME showed highest scavenging activity as evidenced by maximum scavenging of DPPH (83.2%), $OH{\bullet}$ radicals (94.81%), $Fe^{2+}$ chelating activity (88.59%) and a high reducing power 0.623 at $300{\mu}g/ml$. Our results demonstrate that Euphorbia trigona, an unexplored xerophytic plant could be potential source of natural antioxidants and phytotherapeutic agents. The plant possess invariably high amount of polyphenolic compounds with a broad spectrum of antioxidant properties and could be further used for food, feed and pharmaceutical applications.
Solvent extraction using a Schiff-base, salen$(NEt_2)_2$, as a chelating agent has been conducted on several water samples to study the determination of trace Cu(II), Mn(II) and Zn(II). Experimental conditions for the formation and extraction of metal complexes were optimized with an aqueous solution similar in composition to the samples. The matrix difference between the sample and standard solutions was approximately matched, and the pH of each sample solution was adjusted to 9.5 with $NaHCO_3/NaOH$ buffer. The concentration of salen$(NEt_2)_2$ was $7.3\;{\times}\;10^{-3}$ mol/L, and the complexes were extracted into MIBK solvent followed by the measurement of AAS absorbance. The potential interference of concomitant ions was investigated, but no interference from alkaline and alkali earth ions was shown in this procedure. The given procedure is precise, as judged from the relative standard deviation of less than 5% for five measured data. The recovery of 93-103% shows that this method is quantitative for such trace metal analysis.
Copper oxide thin films are deposited using an ultrasonic-assisted spray pyrolysis deposition (SPD) system. To investigate the effect of substrate temperature and incorporation of a chelating agent on the growth of copper oxide thin films, the structural and optical properites of the copper oxide thin films are analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field-emssion scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and UV-Vis spectrophotometry. At a temperature of less than $350^{\circ}C$, three-dimensional structures consisting of cube-shaped $Cu_2O$ are formed, while spherical small particles of the CuO phase are formed at a temperature higher than $400^{\circ}C$ due to a Volmer-Weber growth mode on the silicon substrate. As a chelating agent was added to the source solutions, two-dimensional $Cu_2O$ thin films are preferentially deposited at a temperature less than $300^{\circ}C$, and the CuO thin film is formed even at a temperature less than $350^{\circ}C$. Therefore the structure and crystalline phase of the copper oxide is shown to be controllable.
Many studies have clarified that poly(${\gamma}$-glutamic acid) (PGA) increases the solubility of $Ca^{2+}$, suggesting that PGA enhances calcium absorption in the small intestine. However, there has been no report on the specific interaction between PGA and $Ca^{2+}$ in water. We studied the aqueous solution properties of PGA calcium salt (PGA-Ca complex). The chelating ability and binding strength of PGA for $Ca^{2+}$ were evaluated. The PGA-Ca complex was soluble in water, in contrast to the insolubility of poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) calcium salt, and the chelating ability of PGA for $Ca^{2+}$ was almost the same as that of PAA. The globular conformation of the PGA-Ca complex in water was estimated by SEC and viscosity measurements. The chelation ability of PGA for $Ca^{2+}$ was examined by $^1H$ NMR. The present study showing the characteristics of the PGA-Ca complex will provide useful information about the calcium absorption by PGA in vivo.
