  • The purpose of this raper is to assess the benefits of frequency domain fatigue analysis and compare it with more conventional time domain techniques. The multi-body dynamic analysis, FE analysis and fatigue life prediction technique are applied for the frequency domain fatigue analysis. To obtain the dynamic load history used in the frequency domain fatigue analysis, the computer simulations running over typical road Profiles are carried out by utilizing vehicle dynamic model. The fatigue life estimation for the rear suspension system of small-sized passenger car is performed by using resonance durability analysis technique, and the estimation results are compared with the conventional quasi-static durability analysis results. For the pothole simulation, the percent changes, of the fatigue life between the two durability analysis techniques don't exceed 10%. But for the Belgian road simulation because of the resonance effect, the fatigue life using the resonance durability analysis technique are much smaller estimated than the quasi-static durability analysis results.

  • Currently, automotive industries improve the vehicle performance and reduce the development period of vehicle using each module part for the high quality and performance of vehicles. However each component part doesn't generate the noise and vibration problems, sometime these problems are generated on the assembly status between vehicle chassis frame and each module part. On this study, in order to analysis the dynamic characteristics of a shield door module that is a typical module part of vehicles, the acquisition and evaluation process about the vibration and noise of shield door module is developed. Also the possibility to apply to shield door module of the developed process is verified by the comparison with the dynamic characteristics between plastic and steel module plate.

  • Transfer Path Analysis (TPA) is commonly used, by car makers and parts suppliers, analysis process to root the cause of NVH problems. In general, TPA is an analyzing technique to find the contributing factors of noise/vibration problems, and their transfer path in vehicle. However, not only TPA is used to analyze the source of NVH problems but also is used to predict NVH performance prior to the proto vehicle, or to set the development target for next new vehicle. Automotive parts manufacturing companies have to set NVH performance target when developing new systems just as car makers have NVH target set for new vehicle. Nevertheless, most of components are currently being developed based on subjective evaluation without an objective target. To judge the suitability of using TPA to set NVH target of electric parking brake, this research analyzed the transfer path by setting them in two points of view; Chassis Module and Electric Parking Brake, and comparing the measured value and calculated value. From this result, NVH target of electric parking brake will be approached in level of vehicle, system and component.

  • Increasing fuel economy and reducing air pollution have been unavoidable issues in the development of new cars, and one of the important methods is decreasing vehicle weight. Weight can be reduced by using lightweight materials such as aluminum alloy. Dynamic stiffness analysis was performed and compared for different materials for the knuckle for a car. The dynamic stiffness of 6061 aluminum alloy was about 30% higher than that of FCD600 cast iron. Usually, materials that have high dynamic stiffness show excellent vibration resistance because the dynamic stiffness can affect the vibration characteristics. In order to design a lighter and more reliable chassis component using 6061 aluminum alloy (AA6061-T6), a new knuckle shape is suggested by adding section ribs to an existing knuckle model. The effect of each design change on the reliability and component weight was investigated using computer aided engineering (CAE).

  • Exhaust emissions were characterized for a fleet of 10 alternative-fuel vehicles (AFVx) including 5 compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles. 3 liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) vehicles and 2 85% methanol/15% California Phase 2 gasoline (M85) vehicles. In addition to the standard regulated emissions and detailed speciation of organic gas compounds, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) was used to measure ammonia (NH$_3$) and nitrous oxide ($N_2$O) emissions. NH$_3$, emissions averaged 0.124 g/mi for the vehicle fleet with a range from <0.004 to 0.540 g/mi. $N_2$O emissions averaged 0.022 g/mi over the vehicle fleet with range from <0.002 to 0.077 g/mi. Modal emissions showed that both NH$_3$, and $N_2$O emissions began during catalyst light-off and continued as the catalyst reached its operating temperature. $N_2$O emissions primarily were formed during the initial stages of catalyst light-off. Detailed speciation measurements showed that the principal component of the fuel was also the primary organic gas species found in the exhaust. In particular, methane, propane and methanol composed on average 93%, 79%, and 75% of the organic gas emissions, respectively, for the CNG, LPG. and M85 vehicles.

  • The thesis is a comparative analysis of Infill Technologies between Korea's long-life Mock-up House, a study driven by 'Durability and Flexibility of Long-life Housing Technology Development' of R&D, and Japan's KSI experimental house, the major example of Japan's long-llfe housing. In terms of the domestic Mock-up House, a system of building the floor first was applied. The floor material of each housing unit required a development of dry heating component that is partially substitutable in order to avoid conflict with the finishing. Also, a development of a floor system that can counteract against the construction inaccuracy was required. In the Case of an outer wall, need to make the wall with the chassis. In the case of ceiling, need to develop the double ceiling system which is good for sound insulation. Also, in comparison to KSI experimental house in Japan, it would require to develop a wiring system of the ceiling which can react to the movement of the wall. Especially, to assure the flexible nature of an internal wall, it would desperately require the research and development of the products related to components and flexible system of mechanical/electrical/communication parts as well as supporting institutionalized system for this development. Furthermore, for KSI experimental house in Japan, it would be necessary to formulate a construction manual as well as a systematic and practical planning guide to invent a new interface rule which will secure simplicity of assembling, dismantling, installation and replacement of architectural components for which research development is quite insignificant at the moment. This effort will have to continue to give a solid direction for better application of such reference manual during construction and development of long life span apartment by public sector as well as private corporations.

  • Recently, friction stir welding of dissimilar materials has become one of the biggest issues in lightweight and eco-friendly bonding technology. In this study, a lightweight torsion beam axle, which is an automobile chassis component, was used in the welding to cast aluminum material. The friction stir welding process of A357 cast aluminum and FB590 high-strength steel as well as the effects of the process parameters were investigated and optimized using a novel definitive screening design (DSD). ANOVA was used to predict the importance of the process parameters with 13 degradation experiments using the proposed DSD. Also, FSWed experiments were conducted using an optical microscope analysis to investigate the tensile strength behavior in the weld area. In addition to determining the interaction between the tool's rotational speed and the plunge speed, results indicate that the influence of the plunge depth was the most significant.

  • The domestic automotive industry must consider a strategic shift from traditional automotive component manufacturing to align with future trends such as connectivity, autonomous driving, sharing, and electrification. This research conducted topic modeling on R&D projects in the future automotive sector funded by the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy from 2013 to 2021. We found that topics such as sensors, communication, driver assistance technology, and battery and power technology remained consistently prominent throughout the entire period. Conversely, topics like high-strength lightweight chassis were observed only in the first period, while topics like AI, big data, and hydrogen fuel cells gained increasing importance in the second and third periods. Furthermore, this research analyzed the areas of concentrated investment for each period based on topic-specific government investment amounts and investment growth rates.

  • Electronic equipment has been applied to virtually every area associated with commercial, industrial, and military applications. Specifically, electronics have been incorporated into avionics components installed in aircraft. This equipment is exposed to dynamic loads such as vibration, shock, and acceleration. Especially, avionics components installed in a helicopter are subjected to simultaneous sine and random base excitations. These are denoted as sine on random vibrations according to MIL-STD-810F, Method 514.5. In the past, isolators have been applied to avionics components to reduce vibration and shock. However, an isolator applied to an avionics component installed in a helicopter can amplify the vibration magnitude, and damage the chassis, circuit card assembly, and the isolator itself via resonance at low-frequency sinusoidal vibrations. The objective of this study is to investigate the dynamic characteristics of an avionics component installed in a helicopter and the structural dynamic modification of its tray plate without an isolator using both a finite element analysis and experiments. The structure is optimized by dynamic loads that are selected by comparing the vibration, shock, and acceleration loads using vibration and shock response spectra. A finite element model(FEM) was constructed using a simplified geometry and valid element types that reflect the dynamic characteristics. The FEM was verified by an experimental modal analysis. Design parameters were extracted and selected to modify the structural dynamics using topology optimization, and design of experiments(DOE). A prototype of a modified model was constructed and its feasibility was evaluated using an FEM and a performance test.
